I'm assuming you have a wireless signal in your house? If so, where the PS3 is placed in your home might help - some wireless devices have trouble going through walls. What are you using to broadcast your wireless signal? How far away from your wireless router is your PS3?

When our wireless router died a few months ago, I bought one that specifically was supposed to go through walls and for multi-level houses and it works well.

If you don't have a wireless router, you can't pick up the internet wirelessly with your PS3. How are you accessing the internet now?

The modem/router is what connects your house to the internet - it's either plugged into the phoneline or to cable. If you are using the PS3 in the same room as that box, there should be no problem but if you are relying on it picking up signals through brick walls you may need something to boost it.

There are several ways you can do this. One is to wire the house, from the router to wherever the PS3 is, using an ethernet cable. Another, more flexible, way is to use devices called Home Plug AV. You must use at least two of these to make them work. You plug one into an electrical socket near the router and connect it to the router using an ethernet cable. You plug the other one into an electrical socket in the room where the PS3 is, and that's it - your internet signal is being taken round the house using the ordinary wiring system. Seriously. It's magic. Or rather, it's electric. smile

Yes, but what are you using to SEND the wireless signal to your PS3? Do you have a wireless router in your house?

You need the internet and a wireless router in your house in order to get the internet on your PS3.

You're reading other people's networks - those are not yours and you cannot use them.

The first step is you getting your own internet in the house - otherwise you'll definitely never be able to use the internet with PS3.

What you are doing is technically illegal. It's considered "unauthorized access of a computer network". Here is a bit of info on "piggybacking" as it's called generally: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legality_of_piggybacking

The bottom line is that you are stealing your internet connection from your neighbours. If they have limits on how much they can download every month the chances are that some of them are having to pay extra because of you. You might as well mug them in the street.

That may be, but do you *really* think it's fair that your neighbor is paying for internet service, and you are getting it for free because he/she hasn't set up a secure network?

It might be against your neighbor's terms of service for the internet account. If the internet provider finds out, they may cancel your neighbor's account.

In any case, the only ways to improve reception is to move closer to the source, improve the source (external antenna) or use an external antenna yourself.

Hello smelllykelly. Using your neighbour's connection, even with their consent, is a point worth looking into. Try typing this into Google: sharing internet connection with a neighbor isp terms and conditions. Read a fair number of the comments that the search brings up.

I think the right way to overcome the weak signal would be to sign up with an ISP and get your own connection inside the house. I read that a PS3 has an Ethernet lead socket so better still, connect directly to the router (once installed) using an Ethernet lead. Take the wireless problem away altogether.

I have hooked our ps3 up to an ethernet cable and it works fine. I just don't trust wireless internet just yet and I think some of my neighbours are a bit dodgy. I certainly wouldn't be happy if they were sharing my internet without my knowledge.

We have ours password-protected and my husband has a program (through our wireless router) that allows us to see everything our wireless has accessed.
