The answer to QUEST 234 is as follows: "The Shensi Province (China) earthquake in 1556 was the greatest natural disaster in human history. People throughout all of China felt it, and it is estimated that over 830,000 people died." If this meets your expectations, may I have another? ------------------ God could not be everywhere, and therefore he made mothers. Jewish proverb

Hmmm...Guess it might help if I had read the question correctly - I don't guess 1556 qualifies for the twentieth century. Could we be talking the great San Francisco earthquake of 1906 - 8.25 on the Richter scale - April 18 - 23? Approximately 3000 killed, many as they burned to death after having been trapped in the original quake. ------------------ God could not be everywhere, and therefore he made mothers. Jewish proverb

QUEST 234 IS DONE!!!! On May 22, 1960, at 19:11:14, an earthquake measuring 8.3 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Chile. Over 2000 were killed, 3000 injured and 2,000,000 left homeless in Chile, which suffered $550,000,000 in damage. The quake caused a tsunami which killed 61 and did $75,000,000 damage in Hawaii, and then went on to kill 138 in Japan and do $50,000,000 damage there. In the Phillipines, 32 were dead or missing, and $500,000 worth of damage was caused on the West Coast of the US. NOW may I have another, oh patient Questmaster???------------------ God could not be everywhere, and therefore he made mothers. Oh most wondrous questmaster, I accept QUEST 236. Actually, that's an old favorite of mine - the song and the movie both. And Sagie, beat thyself not about the head over matters of the quest - thy mastery of the snake hath been, well, masterful, and thy time there well-spent! We crusaders should also send in more quests - I know I have slacked off. So I'm slacking on - starting now - I promise!! ------------------ God could not be everywhere, and therefore he made mothers. Jewish proverb
