Answer to Daily...#57..

Q57. [/i]Q55[/i] The current Australian Olympic soccer team are hopeful of progressing though to the final, and playing for the gold medal. Which country did oz face in the first international ever played by an oz Olympic soccer team, and how many goals had they conceded by the time they walked into the dressing rooms at the break?

Answer... The first Olympic opposition that Australia faced was Japan in a game they won 2-0, making the number of goals conceded at the break zero.

Ok, let's stick with this first Olympic team and their historic achievements...

New Q...#60..

Q60. Although they won their first game, Australia failed to make the medal round and left empty handed. This disappointing result could not be blamed on lack of preparation. In the lead up to the Games, they played numerous "friendlies" against domestic State teams and Olympic Games teams from other participating countries. They also played in a unscheduled practice match against a team that was made up of players who were not full time soccer players, but who were in Melbourne due to work committments of another occupation. What was their occupation and where were they from?

Q64. The Commonwealth of Australia is a federation of States, but with a monarch as Head Of State - the Head Of Government being the majority leader in the House of Representatives. The Union, the United States of America, is also a federation of States but the Head of Government and the Head of State are not separated but reside in the one individual, who is elected by the people via an electoral college. Nonetheless, our founding fathers borrowed ideas and concepts from the USA's constitution when drafting ours. One of these is how legislative powers were split up between the States on the one hand, and the federal governmenton the other.

In the USA the splitting of legislative powers between Congress and the States is carried out by specifying which legislative powers were assigned to Congress, with the residue thereof remaining with the States. The Australian Constitution similarly specified the legislative powers of the Federal Parliament (again, the residue thereof remained with the States).

What are the section numbers in the two consitutions which set out the respective legislative powers of each federal government? (in the US consitution it is Article number and Section Number)

Q65. How many States had to ratify the document, the Constitution of the United States of America, such that the Articles of Confederation ceased to exist and the United States under its present Constitution was established?

.. renumbering questions, again

This offer is good until they get within range or The Blowout / Catch-up Round (last 5 week days of the month/game).

All others may answer, but for 20 points and it will count as your daily.

Name the artist for these songs:

S 7. I don't wanna cry
S10. Rockin' to the rythm of the blues

Answer to Daily ...#61..

61. The term "beat" used by Jack Kerouac, as in "the beat generation", was derived from what word? chessart - 09-14-2000 10:32 AM

Answer..Now, this is going to be a tricky one so hang on..I am going to list 2 words that the term "beat" as in Beat Generation, has origins to and the reason is that there are 2 ways of using and interperting the way that this phrase can amd was used. Both explanations are by people who were involved in this word even becoming part of popular culture...firstly, (1) BEATIFIC..Jack Kerouac, writer, poet and player at the vanguard of the Beat Culture had been quoted as saying that he had used the word beat to signify a "scret holiness"..as seen in the following excert from page http://www.charm.net/~brooklyn/Topics/BeatEtymology.html

".... But the term 'beat' has a second meaning: 'beatific' or sacred and holy. Kerouac, a devout Catholic, explained many times that by describing his generation as beat he was trying to capture the secret holiness of the downtrodden. In fact, this is probably the most central theme in Kerouac's work (think of the saintly hobos and lonely truck drivers of 'On The Road' and 'The Dharma Bums'). ..."

(2) However, without doubt the most popular explanation about the origins of the word Beat is that it was a word first used by another 'Beat'identity, a Times Square hustler and drug addict called "Hubert Huncke", who Kerouac, Ginsberg and Burroughs all wrote about in later years (he is the character "Hassell" in Keroaucs, 'On the Road'). Herbert used to use the word to describe people who had been defeated by life, they were poor, or downtrodden...the homeless, the junkies etc. The word 'Beat' really came from the word "beat" , meaning being defeated as in "Our team was defeated 5-0, we were beat bad"..but with a spin on the meaning of it. Further info on this explanation can be found at http://www.charm.net/~brooklyn/Topics/BeatEtymology.html

sorry about the long diatribe but I thought it better to cover all bases...there is certainly more evidence that the term has it's roots in the way that Huncke used it, that version is also contained in 'On the Road', the book that the media anointed as the 'Bible of the Beats', however there is also evidence, although from fewer sources (ie Jack himself) that it originated from the word "Beatific" meaning secret holiness..and I would not be one to query Keroauc's interpretations, but it may be that it came to mean that to him, however originally it had been coined to mean, "beaten by life, downtrodden, without hope".

New Q...#68..

Q68. At the closing ceremony of the 1956 Olympics, the last song played was a specially worded version of the Aussie folk song, "Waltzing Matilda". This song was sung in the stadium by a crowd of over 100,000 people, who had been given the replacement lyrics so that they could join in. Not only had the lyrics been changed but the order of the song was altered, so that the refrain actually opened the song and was the first line sung by the crowd. What lyric opened this special tune, that is, what was the lyric, that replaced "Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda"...?

daily q63 What are the section numbers in the two consitutions which set out the respective legislative powers of each federal government? (in the US consitution it is Article number and Section Number) gtho4 - 09-14-2000 10:53 AM

answer: for Australia, it is Chapter 1, Part V, sections 51-60;
for US, Article I, section 8

It is sometimes said that by putting the legislative branch provisions first, the U.S. founding fathers showed their intention that the legislative branch is the most important of the 3, with the executive being 2nd, and the judicial a weak 3rd. The judiciary and executive both probably have far more power today than ever envisioned by the founding fathers.
