My face is quite red. Kl is right, it is Lady Bird Johnson on #35. Don't know how I got that attributed to Eleanor Roosevelt. Guess I just find it impossible to envision LBJ as a lady's man!

jw, sage isn't playing, he gave himself 100 points for each song title from last month when they became stumpers or something like that

Checked on #61. Definitely not beatnik. Origin of beatnik is explained as follows: "In 1958, after Russia launched their 'sputnik' satellite, S.F. Chronicle columnist Herb Caen coined the word 'beatnik'. He wrote condescendingly that 'Look Magazine hosted a party for 50 Beatniks... and over 250 bearded cats and kits were on hand... They're only Beat, y'know, when it comes to work ...'"

So "beatnik" comes from "beat", not vice versa.

JW, I am not first. I just did that as a joke to have my name in the lead for once since I can't play the game. Sorry if I confused some of you.

chessart,
the question's looking for the first person to use that phrase to describe the greatest, Ali .. I don't know very much about Wilde (der)

Q74. We all know to whom these words refer: "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee", but who was the first to say it, or write it, as the case may be?

sage,
the points for Q74 belong to chessart, Oscar Wilde is indeed the man (upon reflection the phrasing of the question looks bloody awful, to get the answer I was looking for)
what'd you reckon

CHESSART, SAGEBRUSH...in regards to Q61 and the deriviative of the word "beat"....I'm not sure what word it is that you are looking for but I could list plenty of examples and links to many websites that would collobrate the explanation that I posted last Friday.. I won't copy it here again as it is lengthy but it is along the same lines as that which Jabberwock posted yesterday.....the source that Jabber quotes, from the Anne Charters Forward found in reprints of "On The Road", especially in the Penguin versions, is the same source that I rechecked before posting and as most of the web sites will confirm is the the most widely accepted and more importantly is the version mostoften recounted by the people who were actually there....I'm not for a minute questioning the spirit of the game here, or your endevours Chessart, but if the answer to this Question is not to be found within the paraemeters of the answer posted by me last Friday, and again by Jabber last night then I would certainly question the source of the information....usually the redemption of 10 points would not warrant this and believe it or not, I absolutely loathe querying the refereee's decision so to speak, but this area of Literature, Philosphy and Social Change is one which holds special interest for me and one which I have read and studied much on and so when I was ruled incorrect, it just threw me...when I saw that Jabber too had then posted something similiar to the response I gave it dawned on me that if an answer given to you Sage as being correct is not actually correct, and if people post an answer which although it differs to the one given to Sage isactually correct, then because it is still out there as Stumper, other people will try to answer it and they may come up with a similiar answer, or worse still, eliminate the posted answer as it was ruled incorrect (whilst actually being correct)and so post an answer (which is wrong)but they feel, after a process of elimination, that it must be correct. They post it, it too is ruled incorrect and by now more then one player has given up there only chance of a post on a Question either has already been answered correctly or requires an answer which is not factual.....the effect multiplies with each player who answers thereafter....please, this is not at all a slight on you Chessart, nor is it meant to be a shot at the rules or credibility of the game or any of it's players... not at all, I am just trying to get some clarification on the game's rules and conventions for scenarios such as these....I have been guilty of posting wrong answers on many more occassions then I would like to count, however if someone posts an answer which I don't know to be incorrect, then I will do some checking and if the answer they give is accurate (and sometime there is more then one accurate response)then I will post a note asking for the points to be given and the question to be pulled so that others don't waste their posts.....it only seems fair...this game is without the most challenging form of mental stimulation that I have ever experienced..it is truely a great and perfect game which can only work due to the contributions firstly of a Moderator, to whom players owe a huge debt of gratitude to for the time, effort, and patience to sit through posts like this one.....I think all here acknowledge and applaud Sage's weekly efforts without which the game would soon implode...and secondly the game relies on the consistentcy and quality of input from players, which in this room I reckon borders on the insane and surely goes past frenetic.......lol.....so please do not take this as an affront, it is anything but that...just trying to clear up a bit of a black hole in the games procedures...Ta

Paul, the less said about the Ipswich game the better, ditto Nigeria ... it's been, without doubt, a wonderful couple of days, full of sheer ecstacy, excitement, and joy; with those results mate you could've knocked me over with a feather .. btw is Andy Cole really the wrong answer to your question?!

sage,

the answers which I emailed to you as Q55 and Q56 were renumbered by me in SO to Q57 and Q58 but, I've just noticed (der), have somehow ended up as Q56 and Q57, which have both been answered by KL, the second he answered correctly with Bob Bignell (but he's showing in the post before your last points table as pending), and his answer to the first of Russia I've conceded in the above post* 09-15-2000 12:34 AM .. you keeping up with this? (as I've almost lost myself in the process), if not then please shoot me

* in which I refer to the question as Q56 but without making the connection and/or realising that a double re-numbering had occured .. hmm where are my marbles, geez as you get older your hair isn't the only thing you lose

re q61 I see that I did not word it very well. What I am getting at is what word did Kerouac himself see "beat" as being derived from? I know the word predated Kerouac, but I have a web site that says he always saw it as being derived from a certain word. KL was close, and another site does mention the answer she gave.

Yes gt, I have a different answer to Andy Cole or Andrew Cole as he now likes to be known.
I went to the Ipswich game and it was terrible, but all that's forgotten after last night!
Couldn't get a ticket but watched it on TV and we played very well considering all our problems.

last night? hmm just checked lufc.co.uk and and and .. we won 1-0! you bloody beauty; hell, I've been that busy I forget all about that game (der), which means four teams are now on equal points with one win each; things are looking up. Obviously, I didn't watch it live (nothing further need be said). As for this 200th goal and And/y/rew Cole, we will be discussing this in the dead stumper pile. Braver words have been spoken, I'm sure, but my source is almost the horse's mouth.

jw,
further to the words in italics in the 12.13am post in SO, see the post above on/at 09-18-2000 09:25 PM

sage,
Jabberwock, has answered two dailies but thought Q81 was the same as Q74 and took it (Q81) as his stumper presumably thinking I has re-numbered questions (again). I don't have any objections to jw being given points for his two answers as one daily and one stumper, anyone else care to comment on this ..

gt,
I was the one who answered Oscar Wilde, so your above post is confusing

what'd you reckon

I stated my case in Shootout about "sting like a bee", being a stumper by my reckoning.

-still have no idea about theQ19 Clockwork Orange question/query/answer

-also, what ever happened to the Radar's rabbits questions? Did I miss someone else answering it correctly, because I have no clue what the answer was, and I was curious on that one.?

heh. three attempts at Mariah Carrey. must be a record for repeat answers

yep jw, I'm having a great week following all this, a real humdinger - the post where I conceded the points to chessart should indeed 've been to you (der).

when I posted Q81 I thought / hoped that it was clear it was a separate question from Q74 when I re-wrote it by putting Wilde in it as the originator and then made the question specific to Ali .. good intentiuons, seems like I only succeeded in compounding the confusion. sage is gonna love ruling on this when he gets in here cause I think it's left you answering two dailies

in his previous post sage said he'll be updating the dead stumper pile thread to bring us all up to date on which question is where and where the points have gone, Partsdude has conceded the right answer for Clockwork Orange in his post 09-13-2000 07:50 AM but I don't think I ended up with the points .. I wasn't following the radar rabbit one .. sort of glad I left the beatnik question to others, what happened with it, where's that one at?

Mariah Carey .. I once had five, or was it six, goes at a song title some months back, and never got it right, but don't quote me as I'm not sure any longer ..

kl,
you've certainly had sage working overtime this month, first with definition of a day over a weekend, and now PMing when he asked for email! if you PMed sage within the time limit specified then I've got no objections to the rotation scores in High Noon be re-done if sage so chooses .. any input from other players

pe,
nice question on 6-0 equalling, I was digging around for the last time we'd scored six as the next question but got distracted by host cities in the Olympics lol - the DJI looks like it was a gimme, it didn't take you long!

Sage, Sorry not Email but FT Private Messages, as in the Icon with the Thumb Tack and "pm" that is on every post...the private message box system...I sent you a private message on the 19th Sept, which had the answer to Q78 on it...on the bottom I wrote that I was going to send the answers through via that mode...FT Private Message..the reason at the time for swapping was that I was using the PM note mode to post to folk in FT so it was easier to just post everything the same method..thought it was a legit method of getting stuff to you..I finished by the note with something like, "as long as it is Ok by you.."..as I didn't hear back I kept on sending them there.all my answers, including the Shootout answers, are in your private message box of FT...I will send you a copy now of the one's you are after....if i have held up the game I apologise....I sent on my answers to all the outstanding q's in time but unfortunately to an area I thought u used for answers but obviously don't...

It looked like you got the DJI question from the site provided by TJ in "I need an answer" (I think that's where it was).
As soon as I saw that link I decided it might be used in SO by someone.
