Los Angeles TImes Animal Kingdom captures 137th Kentucky Derby John Velazquez picked up mount on Friday and roars to victory
LOUISVILLE, KY.— In his first race on a dirt surface, Animal Kingdom roared from the back of the pack to capture the 137th Kentucky Derby today at Churchill Downs.
A 20-1 choice ridden by John Velazquez, who lost his ride on Uncle Mo Friday when the horse was scratched, Animal Kingdom chased down Shackleford, who led almost the entire race. Animal Kingdom is trained by Graham Motion, who is based in Fair Hill, Md. Nehro also made a run, but finished second. Mucho Macho Man was third. Shackleford faded to fourth.
The largest crowd in the history of the event, 164,858, packed Churchill Downs to watch as the best 3-year-olds in the world competed for the blanket of roses. Despite the fact that the race didn't have an overwhelming favorite, it had no shortage of compelling story lines. | http://www.latimes.com/sports/bs-sp-derby-web-0507,0,1085228.story

One site says the post positions are announced at 12 noon ET on Wed 4th May and this one says it's at 4:45 pm ET Wed 4th May. It doesn't matter which one is correct, we'll both be in la-la land! You mean you're not awake at 2am or 6:45am local time?

- the 9th running of the Kentucky Derby tipping comp saw 15 runners line-up at the barriers .. the 2nd biggest field in those 9 years. The record line-up is the 18 who rolled up back in 2009.
- the 137th running of the Run For The Roses saw Animal Kingdom (20-1) come out of nowhere half way down the straight to win in a boilover. It was a 30-1 shot when the barrier positions were announced on Wednesday.
- the three medallists were the only players to have Animal Kingdom in amongst their 10 picks.
- two players had the first five past their post in their picks .. which gave us a dead-heat out front.
- gtho4 beat szabs on a countback .. he had Animal Kingdom as his #2 pick vs. a #5 pick by szabs.
- Nightmare collected bronze .. he was the other player with Animal Kingdom in his 10 picks.
- tie-breakers were required for all positions from 4th through to 12th .. two tie-breakers were required for 6th-7th-8th.
- KrivoyRog has the honour of choosing the last two horses to cross the finish; in amongst his 10 picks.
- the 3rd leg of the FT Triple Crown is the Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday in November.
- no one has won the FT Triple Crown, and only one person has gone close with 2 of the 3 legs .. szabs won the Kentucky Derby and Melbourne Cup back in 2009.
- szabs almost became the 1st *and* 2nd second person to win two legs, as she won the Grand National last month.

Congratulations to our three winners! and cya'all at Flemington Racecourse for the 151st running of the Melbourne Cup.

Nice writeup, mate, and nice win, too. Congrats to szabs, too- she seems to be good at this stuff. Also, well done to my Texan mate!
