World Cricket 2011 Am back again with the next edition of World Cricket! Plenty of cricket action featuring most of the Test playing countries over the next few months, starting with a series between England and Sri Lanka (from May 26). You will as usual pick 5 players for any Test match and 6 for the ODI series from the list of players I will provide and you score as many points as the runs/wickets by your selected player (I know that limits the participation to a knowledge of the game, but hey, you never know when you can get lucky, right ). A carefully chosen Trump player can double your points and vault you up the rankings ladder. If you are not a regular visitor to the forums here, you can still lodge a team at the beginning of a series and allow it to score for you till a new series comes about. I will PM and remind you to lodge tips whenever a new series is around (how's that for an incentive to take part? ) One thing of beauty with this comp is most threads won't be up till a few days before a match/series and the comp also involves some unannounced series and some mega bonus rounds in between (thanks to the ICC) As promised during that marathon edition last year, from this year onwards World Cricket will only involve cricket internationals played during the English Summer (May to September). Sypher is the defending champion here, and Howie72 and srini701 won the editions before that. We had 13 people taking last year with 6-7 regulars and the others popping up now and then I hope there will be a decent turn out this year and that we can have a good, fun competition. Shout your names out here for what it's worth, so I know you will be there!

I'll give it a go. Someone needs to collect spoons!
I may need a little extra coaching at first. Despite taking a few cricket quizes the game still does not make much sense to me. But I notice that does not stop many of you from jumping into sports with which you are not as comfortable. Maybe I'll get lucky...

Awesome definitions, G Makes cricket easier to "understand" I'll give it a go. Someone needs to collect spoons!
I may need a little extra coaching at first. Despite taking a few cricket quizes the game still does not make much sense to me. But I notice that does not stop many of you from jumping into sports with which you are not as comfortable. Maybe I'll get lucky... Thanks, Rx....plenty of us here who take part in games we don't know know existed This one will be easy as you go along....the tipping threads will hopefully clear a few things for you and then, see how the others are picking their teams the first few rounds before you lodge your teams...that will definitely help you pick your own players each round...

This explanation of cricket is much simpler: You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they'e all out, the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out. When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game! LMAO George! That clears it up beautifully. I know just enough about cricket to know that what you have here is true (in it's way) and certainly funny. It should be interesting...

Welcome to another edition of the World Cricket comp. A special warm welcome to LeoDaVinci and DanielPoulsen, playing this comp for the *first time* and a hearty welcome to N-Bomb and Rossian, who joined us midway through the comp last season. A huge 'welcome back' to regulars gtho4, Howie72, ozzz2002, paper_aero and our defending champ Sypher....here's hoping to see all of you last the course again this year (won't be as painful and as dragging as last season, I promise )
Nobody expected the first match of the season to finish the way it did! Rained most of the days and when all thought it was just a matter of closing shop, England pounced from nowhere to win the first Test....boy, they may well prove a handful to India later this season!
srini701 jumped off the blocks in style to pick a decent team for the Test and landed the first HoF for the season. gtho4 picked up the first spoon with a very average team.
LeoDaVinci is keeping pace with srini with a superb selection and Howie, Rossian, Ozzz and Sypher are not too far behind...
From this year if a first choice player is injured and is replaced in the team, you will score for the replacement player even if you do not pick him. Example: gtho4 had first picked Pradeep and then Dilhara Fernando in his side. Both were injured and were finally replaced by Maharoof in the Lanka side. So Maharoof's scores are added to gtho4 for the round.
By the same token, if you want to experiment or pick a player you think will play, and the player is not picked, you don't score any points for him....example: ozzz2002 had Suraj Randiv and gtho4 had D Chandimal in their sides. Both fit, but were not played...so zero points for gtho and ozzz for these players....hope I am clear here
Will post the round's score soon as I get the damned code right
The next round covers the second Test between the same two sides from June 3. Am sure most of you will want to go and change a player or two (thanks to Kevin Pietersen's continued weakness against left-arm spin )

Thanks for posting these results so promptly, Srini. What a bizarre match! I was watching the tennis but flicked over to see 43-7. I still missed the end though as I had work to do.

The second Test ended in a draw and weather permitting, we may have had a result too....but bad news for the Lankans is that they may have lost their valiant captain Dilshan for the third Test with a broken finger Alistair Cook continues his amazing run with the bat Ian Bell continues to score runs in the middle order and Pietersen showed signs of coming back to form (not good for India later this year )
Sypher is warming up to the task of defending his title here in style. He picked up a HoF this round with a rock solid team (thank God he did not pick that run machine to be his trump ) and zoomed right to the top.
For the second round in a row LeoDaVinci is keeping pace with the leader! This can't be a beginner's luck anymore....watch out for Leo this year
Paper_aero and Rossian have declared their intentions to be serious contenders this year with a solid round there
At the other end srini701 followed his first round HoF with a most miserable performance, thanks in no small measure to the brilliant batting on his home ground by Andrew Strauss and the no-show by Thisara Perera
Ozzz also had two no-shows this round but the 3 Englishmen in his side more than made up for that to keep him in the hunt at this stage...Howie and N-Bomb have both had 2 consistent rounds so far, while gtho4 seems to have bounced back from a poor first round....
The next round covers the 5 ODIs between India and West Indies and we return to England-Sri Lanka with the 4th round.

I'm pleased with this round - if only I'd picked a bowler who actually played in the match. I fear my choices for the ODIs will let me down badly for the next round, though. Thanks for the prompt posting of the results, Srini.

India duly won the series 3-0 without ever looking dominant, rested their best bowlers and lost the last 2 matches to finish with a score line of 3-2
That "resting" of players was what took the toll on our scores here Ravi Rampaul, Harbhajan, Dwayne Bravo, Ashwin, Darren Bravo, Praveen Kumar, Bishoo, all were either dropped or did not play the entire series....
But a few of us did have players in their sides who played all 5 matches and that is duly reflected in the scores....World cricket debutant LeoDaVinci continues to impress, picking up his first HoF with a massive score and surges to a 100 point lead at the top! But as we have seen in this crazy comp, that lead is miniscule at this point...can Leo build on it? Will Sypher let him do that? let's wait and see...
Keeping pace with the two leaders are Rossian and paper_aero. Howie would have been up there too, had he not lodged his tips late and lost the scores from the first ODI
At the other end, ozzz2002 managed to select the ONLY Indian player not to play a match in this series and ended up with his first spoon (I would love to be proven wrong by this genial man, but something tells me, it's just the first of many spoons to come this season for him )
gtho4 picked only 5 players in his side, but still managed to surge past both ozzz and DanielPoulsen in the standings.
The next round covers the 3rd Test between England and Sri Lanka before we turn to the India-West Indies 1st Test. The West Indies team has not been announced yet and I will update the team when done, but please remember you have just 3 days to lodge your team for the next round

It turned out to be a dull, rainy Test with some passages of play for the first 3 days. At one stage I thought we won't have enough play to complete this round! Sri Lanka managed to draw the Test with Sangakkara finally scoring a century in England and England will be happy to await India next...
LeoDaVinci's hanging to the top spot by a very slender margin over "Mr consistent" Interesting battle ahead between these two
Howie72 had a trump who scored just 8 points for him, but he still ended up with the most points amongst us, to leapfrog both paper_aero and srini701 into 4th spot...phew! if only Trott had scored heavily in this Test.... gtho4 lands his second spoon for the season with his pick Chandimal sitting out again.
The next 2 rounds cover the first 2 Tests between India and West Indies before we pick our teams for the last 4 ODIs between England and Sri Lanka (we are skipping the first ODI due to clash of timings with the 2nd India-WI Test...
BIG Thanks to Rossian for pointing out I missed 36 crucial runs scored by Herath in the second innings...pretty sure I did not miss anything else, but if anyone of you comes across any mistakes I may do any time, please buzz and rap me immediately Corrected the scores for the round now....

Srini - the score for Herath looks wrong to me. He batted as night watchman in the second innings and scored 36 as well as 12 in the first innings. This affects LDV and Sypher as well as me.
