Well, that was an exciting 2 weeks of Olympic Mania. The athletes have all gone home and Sydney are probably on one major clean up detail !!

As you all can see the Gold medal for Snake went to Britain (Sypher) followed closely by the USA for Silver (Baglady) and taking Bronze was Australia (karmaloupster).

Special M&M medal which can be eaten goes to Partsdude !!

Well, it's a new month, new game and hopefully a new winner !! LOL

Alright!!! I got the M&M!!! Just a couple of gray areas in the new game. The player has to have played at least 1 season. Is this a full season, or is there a minimum number of games the player has to have played in his career? Second, many players have played in both the American and National leagues during their careers. Does the player have to have played his entire career exclusively in the National League?

Great... now I'm gonna have to learn which teams play in which league.

I know very little about baseball... but will give it a try.

Congrats to all the medal winners!

I'm with Val....other than the "Wait 'till next year" Boston Red Sox, I have little or no desire to follow baseball. All they do is 'scratch 'n spit'.....not a pleasant sight for anyone!

PARTSDUDE has brought up a couple of interesting points. Hope Sage responds. What about players who were on the roster for a full year, but suffered injuries and benched?

Wonder what happened to the Snake Hall of Fame thread...all the award placques have disappeared into cyber space.

Congrats to you, Sypher.....great win for GB--lord knows they needed it! lol (A total of 28 medals...hmmm) lol

Let's hear it for the USA.......#1 in medals (97), with 39 gold, 25 silver and 33 bronze!

Have a great week, everyone!

I'm going to miss the first day's play (Monday). I'll play catch up the rest of the week. Too bad, this is my favorite sport, but I've worked 14 days in a row and I just need a day off before I go nuts.

Isn't that the game which is a bit like rounders? Should be a challenge anyway, I haven't a clue - can't we go back to plants?

They have to have played (been on the roster) for at least one season and have been on at least one National leauge team. This is to rule out rookies that have been traded around and never attained the major leauge statis. Just list the name, team and year.

About the Snake Hall of Fame, It should be updated tomorrow sometime. With changing computers and personal reasons, I have fallen behind in a lot of things. I am not happy with myself and beg your forgivness.

One other thing that may need to be pointed out: Some last names may have something like "Van" or "De", etc., as part of the last name. They count as one word along with the last part of the last name. (example: XXXXX Van XXXXX would be valid).

As far as time /era, they could have played any time as long as it was for the National leauge. A player that played before the leauges were formed would be invalid.

Perhaps this should be in Controversial Isues Baglady - let's look at percentages shall we?

According to the 1998 edition of Whitaker's Almanack the US had a population of 265,284,000 - the UK at the same time had a population of just 58,606,000. Nearly five times the population, now did you win five times as many medals as us? Did you even win four times as many medals as us? Did you?

I rest my case M'Lud.

lol, Sue...that's a good point to bring up, but consider this for a moment, if you will:

U.S. sent 865 athletes/competitors....97 medals
G.B. sent 443 athletes/competitors....28 medals

So U.S. sent approximately twice the amount of athletes (+/- 21), yet we didn't win only 2x the amount of medals...we won almost 4x the amount of medals.

And, no, I really don't think this should be in Controversial Issues...lol

Ok, well I think you both have claims justifibily and GB certainly did better then they have recently...but if you use % per population then surely your hosts take overall Gold.

We are a population of just 18.57 million as of the last census (1998) yet we won an amazing 16 Gold 25 Silver and 17 Bronze for a total of 58 medals. That it is a medal for every 320,017 people. Compare this to both the UK and USA, using the same population stats as above:

Australia 1 medal per 320,017 people ( 58 medals);
Great Britain 1 medal per 2,093,071 people (28 medals);
USA 1 medal per 2,734,886 people (97 medals.

That's a big gap...if you think of the amount of $ poured into to securing one medal then times that out and compare it against say, that nation's GDP.....we have certainly overachieved to snatch 4th overall, pity is we do not have the 4th best economy, nor the potential to be when we are ranked 122nd in the world population wise...where did they get the money for that??

I'm not sure if 4th ranked in the 2000 Olympics will help us much if we are 120th in health services or 95th in Education standards, as the current trend persists.....GST will only fund so much, 58 medals is a magnificent effort by the people who earned the opportunity and those who kept things on track and their efforts are not to be demeaned but I wonder whether we were just a bit overindulgent with something as valuable as the future.

NOW, NOW CHILDREN!!!! Mama leaves the room for one day, and you're squabbling!!! LOL!!!

I think we all did great in the Olympics, many thanks to the Land of Oz for a super job and hosting, and I think fifth place deserves an M&M medal too!!!
Congrats Sypher and BL and Karma!!! WTG!!!

Hi JoJo...

You didn't have to switch the name around...Sage's rules allow for last name, first name OR first name, last name. Wanted to let you know, as it makes finding an entry a little easier.

I´m wondering if Pinhead´s entry for today is valid since I´ve found out that the Pittsburg Pirates are not part of the National League, but the American one. Does Angelo Encarnacion play for both leagues? Someone please explain this game to me! LOL

Pittsburg Pirates are National leauge.

Here is a web site that will help you know what teams are in each leauge by divisions:
http://www.majorleaguebaseball.com/u/baseball/mlb/standings/alstandings.htm

hope this helps!

See??? I told you I knew nothing about this game! LOL Sorry to have brought it up, must have read the info wrong--blame it on the rain, my brain is flooded! Sorry Pingiggles.

---------------------------------------------
Holy moly, I´m sinking fast! Just went over the Snake list...would you believe I hadn´t even realized my entry was the wrong way round? And then I even posted again telling Sypher to edit my entry ´cause I had the player´s number wrong..should have told him to flip it around while he was at it! LOL

Sorry, Sypher..won´t happen again (I hope!).
Was that the only thing wrong with my entry, or is there something else I should know about?

Baseball, baseball...curses on you Sage!

................

A recent Scottish immigrant to the U.S. attended his first baseball game. After a base hit, he heard the fans roaring, "Run...run!"

The next batter connected heavily with the ball and the Scotsman stood up and roared with the crowd in his thick accent, "R-r-r-un yah bahstard. R-r-run!"

A third batter slammed a hit and again the Scotsman, obviously pleased with his knowledge of the game, screamed, "R-r-r-un ya bahstard, r-r-run will ya."

The next batter's count went to three and two. As the next pitch went outside the plate, he held his swing. The umpire called a walk and the Scotsman stood up yelling, "R-r-r-un ya bahstard, r-r-run!"

All the surrounding fans giggled quietly and he sat down, confused. A friendly fan, sensing his embarrassment, whispered, "He didn't have to run, he's got four balls."

After this explanation the Scotsman stood up in disbelief and screamed, "Walk PR-R-ROUD, man! Walk Proud!"
