Copa America 2011The 2011 "Campeonato Sudamericano Copa América", better known as the 2011 Copa America, the main international football tournament for national teams in South America will be held in Argentina from July 1 to July 24, 2011. The defending champion is Brazil. Costa Rica and Mexico join the 10 South American nations to make it a 12-team affair this time. Matches will be held in league stage followed by knockout from the quarters. We can have a comp covering all the matches (you have to be ready to drop in at short notice for the last rounds, since there won't be much time between putting up rounds after the league stage).srini701, LeoDaVinci and KrivoyRog finished on the podium in the inaugural Copa America tipping comp here in 2007. Anybody interested in dislodging them from their places? Sign up here, so I know we can actually have a comp... Editing to add tie-break rules for comp:In case people finish equal on points, they will be separated in the following order: 1. Hof vs Spoon differential 2. If still equal, person with more HoFs is placed higher 3. If still equal, person with more number of right tips (without bonus points) is placed higher 4. IF STILL EQUAL (highly unlikely ;)) I will place them on equal ranking on table and if they are on podium places, plead and convince gtho4 to award them both the podium

I'll try to participate. I'm going to be away from computer access for most of July and August.

Ozzz- The Venezuelans don't have a clue what a football looks like, so I hope you have a comfortable tent . At the same time I might as well give it a go.

I don't know much about football, but that's not necessarily a problem. I quite like wooden spoons, so count me in.

Is that a half time score, or the final result? Now if Venezuela was playing someone a bit easier, such as Oman, or Nauru, or even Suriname I might stick my neck out...

A hearty welcome to all of you for Copa America 2011, another of the quadrennial comps here. I am your new host for this comp this year (and errr...the "defending champ" too ). 16 people lodged tips for the first round, including some football "newcomers" here and as a group, we couldn't have got off to a worse imaginable start A pitiable 27 right picks out of 96, making it a success rate of 28.1% is not something to be proud of but on the bright side....we can only get better in the rounds to come Strong favorites for the title Argentina were held to a 1-1 draw in the tournament opener by "minnows" Bolivia (coached by an Argentine and the goal scored by a Brazil-born player...how much worse could it get for the Argentines )....a result none of us here foresaw, except dg_dave (did he make a million bucks on this game, by any chance ) The team with the most number of Copa America titles and another favorite after a strong showing in the World Cup last year, Uruguay were also held to a draw by Peru, a result that only Howie72 tipped amongst us. Another strong favorites Brazil were off to an even worse start, failing to even score against Venezuela, something even Dave and Howie failed to pick dg_dave however is at the top of the heap at the moment, with that bonus point, and Howie is bunched along with LeoDaVinci, paper_aero and srini701 a point behind. BxBarracuda and toocool4u are yet to get off the ground. This one might well be a real tight-knit comp, as gtho4 had predicted allllllllll along, so please spare me some tensions and lodge all kinds of wild tips for the forthcoming rounds The next round starts Wednesday, July 6, so do lodge your tips in case you haven't done so yet... |

me too. I enjoyed watching college hoops when I was on campus but I have never gotten into watching the pros. My kids and I are glued to the TV when the World Cup is on!

As I was compiling the sciores for the round, I thought to myself "why are we even having this comp this year? We went from bad to worse in the second round, with just 13 right tips in all from a possible 64, for a "success" rate of 20.3%...is it one of the worst ever showing as a group in any FT tipping comp? Dave or gtho4 should chime in here Not one of us picked Argentina to draw for a second consecutive time, just 4 of us picked Costa Rica to win (and thereby losing a bonus point ) and only Howie72 managed to tip Peru to win in this round....I am most tempted to give any right tip in this comp an additional bonus point just to make that table look good Here's hoping the next round will bring us some points... |
