The Summer of Discontent has finally been cracked by the opening volley of the world's best football league - The Barclays Premiership. Let's all stop blaming the bankers for the world woes and instead drift our attention to some of the richest footballers in Europe, who earn more in a week then you or I do in a year. But enough of the moans, it's time to give you a brief recap of this week's matches.......
I think this opening week has a few firsts....No.1 - Only 9 matches instead of 10 were played due to Tottenham looking like Beirut instead of North London. In fact, whilst we are talking about Tottenham, rumour had it that last week the club were on the brink of signing two Italian brothers - Nickatellie and Grabatellie.
No.2 - Not one home team had won a match all weekend and before you say 'what about Man City?', they played on Monday night.
Bolton could claim they were kings of the premiership after trouncing new boys QPR 4-0 whilst Man City taught Swansea how to play football in England and sent them packing back to Wales. Only Norwich could secure a point with an impressive draw at Wigan....(don't laugh). The Big 4 - Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal, perhaps I should revise that as Arsenal and Liverpool haven't won a trophy in quite some time, but look at me, I'm going off topic - Anyway, only Man Utd won and that was by a typical late goal.
Back to our ever growing league - The number of players this year (21) is a marked inprovement to the number of tippers (17) who were still participating at the end of last season - a massive 21 players . A BIG and warm welcome to all the new faces !!
Last year's winner paper_aero and runner-up Sypher have settled into third spot whilst gtho4, who came 3rd last season can be seen admiring his spoon along with several others, but hey, it's early days, there's plenty of time for everyone to collect their silver dinner service set.
BxBarracuda starts as the leader with a score of 5, not bad but not good considering this score was exactly the same as their starting points last season, and that gave them 5th place. Just shows how bad everyone done this week....Teams as well as tippers. Wait a minute, there's a newbie up front as well. Who is wwe84? Apart from their name giving away their favorite sport (if you can call it that), is this a fluke score consdiering they were the ONLY one to dare pick a draw against Liverpool. Who in their right mind would go against King Kenny on opening day? You can put your hand down KrivoyRog, we know you went for Sunderland.
So, that's enough of me rabbiting on, and please be aware that sometime soon your name will be bolded, whether that's a good thing, only you can decide.

58 weeks DanielPoulson [ FAPL ] weeks 17-38 of 2009-10 comp plus entire 2010-11 season
This streak is still running, and became 59 weeks after week one of the 2011-12 comp. It became the
longest spoon-less streak in any tipping comp at FT when it reached 54 weeks earlier this year in April
.. and it's still growing. And I'm not far behind in MLB...53 and counting.

Tottenham and Everton have finally started their season but not in the way they would have liked. In fact, Everton's defeat was at the hands of Premiership newbies QPR, a win which NOONE at Funtrivia picked. Tottenham on the other hand played fantastic in the first half at Old Trafford, only to be picked to pieces by the skill of Danny Welbeck and co. Spurs are still at half strength due to injuries within their midfield and with the likes of Modric on their way out, Harry Rednapp will need to pick up some late transfers. That other North London side, yes y'know the one that has a red and white kit, well they lost at home to Liverpool. I think that this win was Liverpool's first in 11 years. Man City continue their winning ways but it is Wolves who are the surprised team who have not lost a game yet and at least they haven't tried to buy the league (unlike Man City).
Taking a look at our league - srini701 claims this week's win with an impressive 7/10 shooting up the table into 2nd spot. At least he has something to smile about now considering what his national cricket side has had done to them.....can someone say WHITEWASH !! BxBarracuda remains in 1st place whilst at the other end - KrivoyRog collects their 2nd spoon in as many weeks.
Some people have gone up, some have gone down and a few have stayed the same...but it is only the second round and anything can happen.
Arsenal to replace their manager first - Why? Cause they need to!!!. |

Can someone please tell me what is in the water in Manchester because this weekend's score was Manchester 13 vs North London 3. Arsenal fans must have been rubbing their hands at the chance to point out how bad Spurs lost to Man City, only for fortune to make a dramatic u-turn and see them lose to Man Utd by the biggest margin they have had in club history for 104 years. Oh what a shame !! Most teams had a convincing win with the exception of Everton and Stoke who both manage to score in the dying minutes of the game, in fact Everton's was the last kick of the game which meant 6 of us lost out on a precious point.
Back to our league - srini701 claims back to back weekly wins with a massive 8/10 along with Sypher and Dizart. Now, if srini701 had kept his picks for the FAPL the same as the FTPL, he would have had a massive 9/10 and kept the weekly win all to himself.....but noooooo, he flipped the last two games. Was this a mistake? Will he regret this? Only time will tell.
George95 claims back to back spoons and joins KrivoyRog at the foot of the table. This was not the biggest drop of the week for a single player, that honour goes to wwe84 who fell to 15th spot from 3rd.....Ouch!!
DanielPoulson continues his spoonless streak and should find it no problem to extend this streak for many more rounds considering the risks some of the other players take, but could I have jinxed it now by saying that? [Insert Evil Laugh]

Spurs at last have won a game and start their premiership challenge for the top but can anyone stop Manchester United or City? Another eight goals go to Manchester whilst the rest of the UK...Zero !!
If you thought last week that 3rd and 7th place was busy, this week the two groups have more or less joined forces to create a super group and have lodges their attack from 2nd place against the leader srini701. This week's winners are none other then LeoDaVinci, N-Bomb and Ozzz2002. Speaking of Ozzz2002, this prolific player managed to secure this win with an outstanding tip by being the only one to choose Stoke against Liverpool. What was he thinking?
George95 didn't get a spoon this week but that still didn't help as they continue to slide and now rest at the bottom of the league. Also going in the wrong direction is this week's spooner - trev1.
Well, it appears I didn't jinx DanielPoulson and his spoonless streak carries on....

After all of Saturdays games were finished, most of us were lucky to have one pick correct and it looked like DanielPoulson might be picking up his first wooden spoon BUT along came Sunday and everything went to plan unless of course you are a Man City supporter. Looking back over the weekend sports and it give me great pleasure to see Arsenal losing 4-3 whilst Spurs won 4-0 whilst delivering a commanding performance against Liverpool.
So, highs and lows of this week - Ozzz2002 takes tghe weekly win and shoots, no...flies up the table from 10th to 1st joining srini701. If that wasn't bad enough for srini701....BxBarracuda has steped up to keep them company. There are now no big groups as everyone has teamed up in two's or threes's. How sweet !!

Talk about a complete turnaround for tipping, I mean....last week was one of the worst but this week has to be one of the best. Between us we manage to tip 136 out of 210 (65%), not only that but on most occassions, if one scored 8/10 that would mean a weekly win....not this week !! Dizart only missed out on the Man Utd draw to score a perfect round. At least they were in good company as NO-ONE predicted Stoke to draw with Man Utd.
There has been quite a lot of movement in our league with several players hitting new highs as well as some lows. Srini701 continues to tip differently between the FAPL and the FTPL and this week done slightly better here but not enough to secure 1st place by themselves. Oh no....Sypher and LeoDaVinci have crashed the party !! Ozzz2002 who was one of last week's leaders drops to 8th whilst picking up their second spoon.
So until Manchester teams fail week in week out - Keep Tipping!!!. |

Last round I mentioned that I thought that might have been the best tipping around for ages, well...knock me over with a feather duster, you lot have managed to go 1pt better then last week to make this now the best so far !! All the top teams won (Yes...that includes Spurs and not their unhinged rivals)
Srini701 has fallen off the top spot by taking one of the many spoons handed out this week to those who scored 50% correct !! Unbelievable !! Not only that, LeoDaVinci and DanielPoulson scored a near perfect 9/10. Other news - George95 has finally vacated last place and paced the tenancy over to a lovely couple - dg_dave and trev1

Oh what a glorious day!! Spurs are in the top five with a game in hand, which should they capitalise on, will place them third behind Manchester. Which brings me smoothly onto....MAN UTD. I will have to stop laughing as Man Utd's performance against Man City was a JOKE !! 6-1 defeat at home. Even Spurs didn't let in that many goals against Man City. Then to top it all off.....QPR go and beat Chelsea. Sweeeeeet !!
Well, after nine rounds the scores from top to bottom are not that far apart....ok, I lied. Anyone below Ozzz2002 in our league needs to get their act together as they are at least a round behind in points. KrivoyRog in theory scored 6/8 this weekend as two games were not predicted by anyone. Hell, I would love to know what paper_aero was thinking when he put Liverpool to draw at home against Norwich. Don't they realise that the entire Norwich squad can be bought if Liverpool sold Gerrard or Suarez? Norwich was supposed to lose - a testement to the fact that 20 of us predicted Liverpool to win.
Only four players this season have not received a wooden spoon - DanielPoulson is one of them, who continues their spoonless streak to set a new record when it finally comes to an end. Did I Jinx that?
LeoDaVinci plods along merrily by adding another point to their lead, leaving Sypher to share 2nd place with srini701. The rest of us are well and truely bunched up.
So heres hoping Spurs continue their climb up the table!!!. |
