Yep..the game is a Monday to Friday competition.
As far as the OED...I use this is as a check-list but the link Karma left in this thread is a good source to check with as well.

If it exists there..the entry will be valid.

Sypher--so, what's the resolution of Sage's challenge? Do I get bonus points for defending my entry?

What is Karma's link? I don't see it.

I agree Sypher. My challange should be answered by you. Main reason is that it was made on the same day and it may mean that you weren't the winner for last week. Remember, you jumped ahead in points on a challange.
Ties is plural! When used as a "verb", it is involving two (or more) things. Examples: "He will tie a score." is the act of connecting one thing to another. "He Ties the score." is the completion of connecting two things together.

Your call Sypher.

Sage, Sypher is the one to decide the challenge, but I can still defend my entry. I was not using tie the noun (as in men's neckwear), I was using the verb, "to tie". Verbs are not really singular or plural--they have tenses. "Ties" is the present tense and would be the appropriate form of he/she/it (all "singular", third person forms ) "ties" something. As in, "He ties a string around his finger when he wants to remember something."

Sage, I have to admit that Chelsea's defence is sound, but this does show a nice little grey area for the future. I think I will have to make a rule asking to show if it is a noun, verb or adjective...

Sorry Ol'Buddy but Chelsea gets the defence !!

I don't think it is a particularly grey area. CB ws able to prove that the word can be, and in her case was, used as a verb . In my case, the word talon is most definitely a noun.. one cannot talon people. If the word could be a verb then it can have an s , if it couldn't it can't. See?

I still say it is plural. In the webster's dictionary on-line, when you type in "ties", it shows you "tie" as the word for both noun and verb. Not tie for noun and ties for verb. But you have made your decision. How many points did CB get for her defence and are you still the winner?

Yep...I'm still the winner and the points CB got were your points for the day as you challenged and lost. So CB got 4 points and you lost 4 points...(Double bonus points are still yours as they can't be touched once received)

Sypher--I notice that no one (including you) is indicating whether their entry is a noun, a verb or an adjective. My entry today is a noun. Do you want this info written under the entry in the future? Is it really necessary?

This only has to be included when you think your entry is going to be questioned....

How can you know, in advance, that someone is going to question your entry? Many English words (the same words) can be used as verbs, nouns, and adjectives---it depends on the context. Maybe this is just something to give people pause before they challenge, rather than something to be included with the entry.

I am sooooo sorry - I read just about every other thread, but I didn't even think to check the time slots!! I'll be better tomorrow, promise! (I guess I sit here and get anxious, cuz Dumbbell is signed up for snake but never seems to play, and there was such a big gap in scramble between CB and me, I just took it for granted.)
Welcome aboard, JW!

What if, instead of asking players to declare their word nown/verb/adj./ect... how about requiring them to use the word in a sentence with the entry.

Just a thought

My only objection to using the word in a sentence is that it might reduce challenges, and isn't that part of the fun? If I use my word, and someone didn't otherwise know it but it triggered a memory or recognition or something, maybe we lose some of the zip of the game? But I'll do whatever everybody wants.
And from now on, I'll do it after Jabberwock!

I challange Purple Fan's entry. Dray is spelled with an A, not an E as she spelled it.

Hi Sagebrush, Well in my 1993 OXFORD Dictionarythe word DREY means Squirrel's nest! I was aware there was another form of the word spelt Dray but I meant to use the Drey one!!
Oh well I guess I Used the wrong one although it is in the dictionary that I have!! PF

Backing up PF's entry, a DREY is definitely a squirrel's nest.Just looking for a website to confirm this.OK:
THE PROBLEM STARTS HERE
In the wild, squirrels are arboreal, living exclusively in the trees. The squirrels around here, in New Jersey, the eastern grey squirrel, will usually have several nests (called a drey) they can go to, and in case they lose one, they will quickly go to the next one. In the wintertime, you can see their summertime dreys - those collections of leaves and twigs visible in the trees through leafless branches. They usually abandon these summer homes in the winter and seek something more secure. A hollow tree somewhere is ideal. But your attic is much better. Especially here in suburbia, where there is a dearth of hollow trees, and an abundance of squirrels and attics.

When I type in "drey" in the Webster's on-line dictionary, I get this:

Merriam-Webster's Unabridged
Now on CD-ROM!

Powered by Franklin Electronic Publishers

The word you've entered isn't in the dictionary. Click on a spelling suggestion below or try again using the Dictionary search box to the right.

Suggestions for drey:
1. dree
2. dray
3. Drew
4. drew
5. dreg
6. der
7. dare
8. DARE
9. deer
10. Dear
11. Deer

If it's in the Oxford dictionary, why wouldn't it be in Webster's? Also, if we can't access the Oxford one on-line, then why use it?

Ren, if you found that info at a web site, why didn't you post the URL so it could be verified?

"drey" could not be found in either "Bookshelf 95" dictionary or "Encarta95" encyclopedia. If it is a word, why can't I find it in any refrence material I have access to?

Ok....Sage is right in Challenging PF's entry and Ren is correct in the defence....In fact you are both right !!

Why ? Drey is a varient form of spelling of Dray. Both mean the same thing according to the Oxford English Dictionary. As far as this challenge goes...no-one will gain or lose points.

As to why this word is not in Websters or anything else, I have no idea....and I can't access the site that I posted in the first thread of this game...(typical)
