Whew - tough audience today!! I'm home with a sick munchkin, so I missed my turns in both games today. If I read the Scramble slots right, I can get in here before Jo. Hope that's ok??!! ------------------ Sieze the moment. Remember all those women on the Titanic who waved off the dessert cart. Erma Bombeck

I have to challenge Cellardoors entry-'greets' Rule #4--no plurals.. ------------------ "What a waste it is to lose one's mind. Or not to have a mind is being very wasteful. How true that is."............. Dan Quayle

Sorry Pindoodle, but I have to challenge your challenge and raise you - "GREET" is not a noun, so it cannot have a plural. You can't have a greet for breakfast, touch a greet when you're feeling blue or throw a greet at your worthless husband. The noun would be "GREETING" and then the plural "GREETINGS." Greets is a verb, and a singular form at that - as in "He greets, she greets." If more than one person is doing it, it doesn't have the "S" at the end: "They greet, You all greet, we greet." This is the same objection Sage offered a few weeks ago - it ends in an "S" but does not an objection make!!! Tricky tricky!!! ------------------ Sieze the moment. OK...I'm confused....Who is challenging Who ? I understand that Pinhead is challenging Cellardoor...but isn't it Cellardoor who has to defend to knock the points off Pinhead on a successful defence. Confused ? I am !! LOL [This message has been edited by Sypher (edited 02-01-2001).]

Just figure I offered CellarDoor's defense - because Pin's challenge was erroneous, and it was a re-run of a grammatical error we already discussed several weeks ago - Didn't mean to interfere, but in lawyer parlance here in the heartland, we call it plowed ground - didn't need to go over it again! ------------------ Sieze the moment. Thanks, Mamaja. I appreciate your defense and I'll add a few words in case Sypher needs it to punch my ticket. Like you said, GREETS (in my dictionary anyway) is a verb (like I noted in my entry) and thus doesn't have a plural. It's even a conjugation of a singular form. But even if it were "GREET" (conjugation of a plural form), no one would challenge it on the grounds that it was a plural. (Of course, it would have been a 5-letter word on a 6-letter day, but that's another matter.)

I'm sorry I opened my mouth..LOL, but all I know is, I went down to my library and 'greets' wasn't in our copy of the Oxford Dictionary. Greet, greeted, greeter, greeting were all that were listed. I have five different dictionaries and it isn't in any of those. I can't verify the Oxford Dict. online 'cause it's $15.00+ a month to subscribe to it, and it ain't worth it to me; unless Syph's offering 'cash prizes'.... How bout we take a vote on that??? LOL All in favor say AYE!!!! Yeah!!!

Just one last thought, PinDarling, on the whole "in the dictionary" thing: No dictionary has a separate entry for every single form of a word. But if you go back to the one you referenced, you might see under "greet" something like this: "greet, verb transitive -s, -ing, -ed..." then the definitions and origins. I am using an old Webster, and it only has the alternate forms for irregular verbs, which doesn't include greet, but that would be a way of including everything without taking up as much space. So the word "greets" is in there, just with some presumptions behind it. Do ya think this horse is dead, or should I flog it once more for good measure???? ------------------ Sieze the moment. I just remembered, there are TWO separate words in the dict., and different meanings. 1. a house or dwelling 2. a leader My entry is the opposite of BL's... Is this perfectly clear now??? ...................
