The ten 3rd Qualifying Round matches (aka the play-off round) were completed on Wednesday night 24th August. The 10 winners joined the 22 teams who were exempt until the Group Phase. The draw for the group phase took place on Thursday 25th August .. if you've got a few hours to kill, you can read the complete details of the qualifying & exemption procedures here : Regulations of the UEFA Champions League 2011-12. Most of the 32 teams in this year's comp are familiar names, but there are a few qualifiers whose names will be alien to most of us (see next post).
The group stage commences in a bit over a fortnight on Tuesday 13th September (the first round of the tipping comp), and the final will be played on Saturday 19th May 2012 in Munich (the 19th round of the tipping comp). There's a two month mid-winter break, for all of us to grab some R&R, between the last round of the group phase on Wednesday 7th December and the start of the KO Round on Tuesday 14th February 2012. |
Rules: they're the same as last year, and the year before. The rules for this comp are simple: points
default
full-time
upsets
perfect picks
other bonus pts
dead-heats | one point for each correct pick.
if you forget to pick, the away teams are all yours (ineligible for bonus pts).
picks are H-x-A at full-time; extra time or penalty shootouts are ignored.
if you pick a game solo (or one of two), you score a bonus point.
8/8 scores a bonus point. You also receive a knighthood from Her Majesty.
no one picks a win, whoever picks a draw.
no one picks a draw, whoever picks the upset win.
if you pick all home teams (or all bar one), you're ineligible for bonus pts.
weekly wins vs. wooden spoon countback determine podium finishes;
if they're identical, bonus pts will be used. |
Deadline: is always kick-off in the first game of the round. Please don't wait until the death, as there are 4 time zones in Europe, and there's a good chance you'll get it wrong! If you post your tips 4 hours before the scheduled kick-off time for games in the UK, you should be safe. No one has successfully defended their title .. and doomed is the only player who's won this more than once. He's been on the podium three times (all gold) .. ditto Sypher, who has stepped up onto the podium 4 times (all silver). Prior winners ElfTwinkle, gtho4, ozzz2002 and KrivoyRog can win this a second time, ditto PaulE (who'd become the first to retain their title) .. or will this season see a new name etched on the trophy?
PaulE won it last year by a single point from N-Bomb and paper_aero, who dead-heated for 2nd. N-Bomb won silver on a HoF vs. WS countback .. srini701 finished the season without a spoon (his last spoon was in the final round of the 2009-10 comp). His spoon-less streak is 19 weeks and will continue into this year's tipping comp.

. This year's comp has 17 runners, which is the same as last year .. toocool4u is a no-show and dg_dave is the new recruit.
Everyone except trivipaul and KrivoyRog picked the home win by Chelsea, but from there it was all downhill .. with four of the eight games ending up as a draw, most of us were struggling; especially those of us who don't pick draws (four games have gone down the gurgler).
triviapaul and srini701 were the only players to reach 50% with his picks .. and with three bonus pts in tow triviapaul has already skipped away to a very healthy 2 pt lead obver srini701 (he finished one up from the bottom in last year's comp). Valencia and Barcelona were held to draws, and he picked both of them!
No-one picked the upset win by APOEL Nicosia, which gave a bonus point to each of the 7 players who went out on a limb and picked a draw.
Barcelona were leading 2-1 until the last minute, when AC Milan equalised. This late goal gave a bonus point to dg_dave and triviapaul for solo picks .. and the 15 of us who picked the win scored zilch.
Arsenal were leading 1-0 until 2 minutes from the end .. four players picked the draw, but the five players who picked Arsenal to win away are spitting chips! (dg_dave George95, ozzz2002, PaulE and szabs)
srini701 finished last year's comp without a wooden spoon (his last spoon was in the last round of the 2009-10 comp). His spoon-less streak now stands at 20 consecutive weeks.
The second round of the tipping comp is tonight. |

. There were 4 draws in the first round of the Champions League, and the 2nd round was a repeat performance .. another 4 draws .. and triviapaul continues his one man show out front.
Manchester City were held to a draw, and Manchester United were held to a draw .. and he picked both of them as solo picks. No-one picked the loss at home by Inter. All of us except one picked Inter to win .. triviapaul scored yet another bonus point for picking yet another draw. If the 8 games had gone according to the form guide he would've scored zero, as he picked a draw for every single game.
He scores another weekly win with 4/8 and with a basket of bonus points in tow extends his lead out front, after just two rounds, to 6 pts. The next 10 players in 2nd to 11th are separated by just 2 pts.
Lille were looking at a win with a scoreline of 2-1 going into the last minute of the game .. CSKA snatched a draw with an equaliser in the last seconds of the match. Five players picked this draw but, more importantly, the 11 of us who picked Lille were robbed of a point. Real Madrid and FC Basel were expected to win, and duly won. If these two teams hadn't won, most of us would've scored peanuts for the 2nd round.
The next round is in a fortnight's time : UEFA ( 3 ) Tue 27th September. If the upsets continue this'll be all over before the New Year, and the rest of us will be fighting over the minor places on the podium. |

. There were no bonus points this round as no-one picked the upset at Old Trafford, where Mancheter United went 2-0 up after just 17 minutes, but found themselves behind an hour later (2-3 in the 76th). The equaliser came in the 90th.
How many times have Manchester United surrendered a 2-0 lead and lost, over the last 25 years; since 6 November 1986 when Sir Alex was appointed manager? Never, according to soccernet.com. That's how close FC Basel came to creating history last night.
Six players picked 6/8 for the weekly win .. that's back-to-back wins for Dizart, LeoDaVinci and PaulE .. and triviapaul sees his lead out front halved to 3 pts.
Dizart and triviapaul retained their positions out front from last week, but the rest of us played musical chairs apart from BxBarracuda .. 3rd and 3rd last are separated by 4 pts.

. Is it something in the water .. some degree of normality seems to have returned to the UEFA CL tipping comp. Two consecutive rounds with zero bonus points is some feat.
Six players picked 6/8 for the weekly win. That's three consecutive wins for Dizart and PaulE .. and triviapaul sees his lead out front cut again. It's now down to a run-of-the-mill 2 pts. After consecutive weekly wins LeoDaVinci follows up that effort with this week's wooden spoon.
