The 2011 Rugby World Cup starts in 2 weeks time, on Friday 9th September. South Africa are the defending champions. This is the 7th iRB World Cup. The winners of the first six finals were:

There will be 8 rounds in the tipping comp with 8 pts each round. The comp will run for 7 weeks with one round each weekend, except for the 2nd round which will be mid-week (see list of tipping threads in post below). Advance picks will be lodged in Round 1 for the four semi-finalists, and in Round 2 for the two finalists and the winner. The rules are the same as those used for the Super XV tipping comp:

dead-heats

one point for each correct pick.
if you forget to pick, the wooden spoon score is all yours.
for those brave souls amongst us, you can pick a draw (good luck).
if you pick a game solo, you score a bonus point (or one of two tipsters).
of 8/8 scores a bonus point.
no-one picks a draw, bonus point for the minority who picked the upset
win (same as FLC and Super XV comps).
weekly wins vs. wooden spoon countback. If they're identical bonus pts
will be used; and then the advance pick for the winner.

This is the 3rd running of the iRB World Cup tipping comp. The first comp back in 2003 was won by Dazzy_D, followed by silverginger and Bertho. The second comp in 2007 was won by jonnowales, followed by srini701 and jill-geo.

A field of 14 runners were at the barriers for the start of the 3rd edition of the iRB World Cup tipping comp .. nine have played before (see table below at bottom right):

5 played in the 2nd one 4 years ago (Howie72, jonnowales, KrivoyRog, paper_aero & srini701);

two played in the first one 8 years ago but skipped the second (Davjack and Sypher);

and two have played in all three (ozz2002 and gtho4).

The five newbies to make it a field of 14 are: BxBarracuda, George95, LeoDaVinci, N-Bomb and triviapaul.

Between us we lodged 112 picks, and 108 of them were correct .. 10 of us had perfect picks of 8/8 and the remaining 4 collected a wooden spoon each for one error at 7/8!

That leaves us with 10 leaders after the first round .. and of those 10 seven have identical advance picks for the four semi-finalists (see table below at bottom left). It looks like the three medallists for this comp will be decided at the end of next month, when the World Cup Final is played.

There will be an upset or two along the way (the favurites can't win everything), and the podium finishers should be the ones who went for an upset that paid off. Sypher nearly hit pay dirt in the first round with Wales (South Africa came from behind to win) .. ditto KrivoyRog and ozz2002 with Argentina (England also came from behind to win).

Last week 10 players picked a perfect 8/8 for the opening round of the iRB World Cup .. and of those 10 just one player came back on stage for an encore performance.

BxBarracuda adds to last week's perfect with another one for another bonus point. He picked both upset wins, but the loss by Australia was a solo pick which earnt him a bonus point (aka there were two bonus pts in the 2nd round, and he collected both of them).

George95 stays in touch by picking Canada to win; which was no surprise as as he lives in Ontario!

The remaining 8 players from last week's 10 perfect-pickers are a further point behind = 4 pts behind the leader (and we've only played 2 of 8 rounds). Can our leader BxBarracuda keep up this frantic pace out front?

At the rear of the field, the two Sydney-siders Davjack and ozzz2002 picked 5/8 for back-to-back wooden spoons.

It looks the Tonga v Japan game maybe the biggest roadblock for me as my picks macth the majority on all the games and all but that game has a vast majority for one team.

The third round saw 13 players lodge picks .. seven of them were a perfect 8/8 and six of them were 7/8 for a wooden spoon each. That's three perfect rounds by BxBarracuda to make it a 24 straight with 24/24.

However, 24 straight is not a record for the iRB tipping comp .. Dazzy_D, bertho and Eraserhead were 30/30 in the 2003 comp after 3 rounds and then picked the next two games to make it 32 straight before their first wrong pick arrived .. jonnowales was 28/28 after 7 rounds in the 2007 comp and then missed the first game of the 8th round (it was a draw, which was picked by no-one) to end his run at 30 straight.

George95 was second last week but collects one of the spoons and slips to 6th. This allows the 4 tipsters who were equal 3rd to jump up into equal 2nd place, and also allows BxBarracuda to extend his lead out front to a mouth-watering 4 pts .. and the next 10 players are separated by 2 pts.

For those of us who have both Australia and South Africa as our advance picks for the semi-finals, here's the bad news: Australia's upset loss to Ireland in the previous round means RSA and AUS will meet in the quarter-finals if the remaining pool matches play-out according to the form-guide (aka no upsets). Twelve of us have picked South Africa as a semi-finalist, and all 12 of us have also chosen Australia (one of those 12 is BxBarracuda). The two who do not have both of these teams are Davjack and Sypher.

There are no perfect picks in Round 4 as Canada v Japan finished a draw. This brings to an end BxBarracuda's run of perfect picks. After some detective work by dg_dave, the perfect picks record for the iRB comp is 32 straight as follows:

There's no change out front. BxBarracuda retains his lead at +4 pts, with 3 players equal 2nd (down from four players last round) .. and then there's a gap of 2 pts to the rest of us.

If England win the Final, BxBarracuda will stroll through to the finish line and win this in a canter. However, if England lose their semi and fail to make the final, it's on for young an old (as BxBarracuda will lose 4 pts, one for picking a finalist and three for picking the winner).

That completes Round 4 and the first half of this comp.

Four players had a go at picking the upset, but only one succeeded. LeoDaVinci picked France to lose and hit pay dirt. He won the last round of pool matches with a perfect 8/8 and rockets up the table into 2nd place .. and BxBarracuda see's the leader's margin cut from +4 to +3 pts.

Australia finished 2nd in their group and now face South Africa in the quarter-finals .. and have ended up on the same side of the draw as New Zealand:

The two semi-finals are QF1 v QF2 and QF3 v QF4. In other words, those of us who have any of these three sets picks are rowing upstream without a full set of paddles:

o only one of South Africa and Australia will play in the semis.
o those of us who have picked a NZ v AUS final will lose another advance pick.
o ditto those of us who have picked a NZ v RSA final.

Sypher is this round's winner with 6/8, and reduces the deficit behind 3rd from 3 pts to 2 pts. However, with the elimination of England he lost three advance picks: a semi-finalist, a finalist and the winner .. that's 5 pts (out of 16 pts) which are unavailable for the last two rounds.

BxBarracuda collects his first wooden spoon but retains the lead. With the elimination of England he also lost three advance picks .. but he also lost RSA as one of his semi-finalists .. that's 6 pts unavailable over the last two rounds. N-Bomb is in the same boat .. as he had RSA to win and England as a semi-finalist.

The other wooden spooner was trivapaul .. it wasn't ozzz2002. He's stopped the rot.

Australia will now meet New Zealand in the second semi-final .. and eight of us have chosen them as our two finalist. Al eight of us will be scratching for pts in the last round.

BxBarracuda is still there but it's now a three-way tie out front with one round left. The defending title holder jonnowales is the only player who can score 8/8 in the final round, but he's too far behind at -9 pts to land on the podium.

Sypher scored the only bonus point but, as he has no live picks (worth 5 pts) for the final, can't catch any of the leaders .. and the rest of us from there down are also out of it.

The medallists will be three of the five in front of Sypher. Five of the 8 pts in the final round are our advance picks (1 pt each finalist + 3 pts the winner); the other three points will come from these three picks:

FT : Wales v Australia
HT : France v New Zealand
FT : France v New Zealand

BxBarracuda can still win this .. if the unthinkable happens and New Zealand lose to France.
