Oh Jabberwock.....there has been one thing that I make sure I do....and that is never have an entry that can be challenged...(well, almost) According to the OED.....If it's there I use it. ygazed - arch. pa. pple. of gaze v. 1812 Byron Ch. Har. ii. lxxi, He that unawares had there ygazed. BTW...I am copying this word for word out of the OED.... rewve - obs. f. rue. (That's all it has) I'm afraid it can be found in there....but like Purple Fan has suggested, from next week, the entry has to make sense in a sentance. Sorry You lose your bonus points for the day...

Thank you Sypher, sweetie! On the challenge of your entry, with all due respect, I would just point out that the "obs" you have shown in the entry stands for "obsolete." Does that impact the validity of your word? ------------------ Sieze the moment. Remember all those women on the Titanic who waved off the dessert cart. Erma Bombeck

Is that what it means ? LOL Still, the rules state it must be in the OED...So I could bend the rules and say it is still valid...that is until next week...Sorry Mamaja...

Not a problem, Sypher. I wasn't necessarily trying to lodge a challenge as much as to clarify a point for future consideration. Hey, Jabberwock, are you playing now or at some later time??? I don't want to keep Baglady waiting again this week - she gets so testy!!!!! LOL!!!! (Love you BL!)

Sypher - I have a couple ideas that might make the game more interesting. First - As you may notice that a lot of the same words are used every week (different games). How about if you used a word that hasn't been used in any of the previous games the score is doubled (letter score X 2). If it is a new word and starts with the last letter of the previous entry then the score is tripled (letter score X 3). If word has been used before then scoring will be the same as it is now. Second - As the game is now, the first day is four letters, second day 5 and third day (Wed.) 6 letters. Then it decends to 5 on Thur and back to four on Friday. How about if it keeps rising where on thur it would be 7 and Fri. 8 letters? Also, on Friday when you have 8 letters, if you make an eight letter word, then can make two words out of the eight, you would get a bonus for the second entry. It would not be manditory to make the two word entry, just to get a bonus. This would really shake it up where the player leading into Friday wouldn't necessarly be the winner at the end of the day. These are just suggestions for you to contemplate.

Sounds good...looks like I will have to create a database on all the words that have been used... Next week is looking like it is going to be a major shake up in the game...of course that all depends on how busy my weekend will be...But I will let everyone know if there are going to be any changes.. ------------------ ...and I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues !!

Sorry Karma -- I'm going to challenge your entry, "EVERY." It's a repeat of Sage's entry today.

Before anyone asks...I do not know if a French word is allowed.... I didn't think the problem would arise, so in this case it has shown that another new rule has to be inserted....Only English !! Oh well.....Well done Ren on a superb win !! [This message has been edited by Sypher (edited 02-09-2001).]

I must say that I love all of Sage's suggestions. However, it sounds like it will be a maintenance nightmare for you, Sypher, so I wouldn't blame you for not wanting to monitor all of that. Hi Sypher... Since Rule 10 states that ANY duplicated entry will be invalid, I was wondering if you could clarify Rules 2 and 3. Did you mean that any UNUSED word (not using the last letter of the previous entry) would be X2, and an UNUSED word (using the last letter of the previous entry) would be X3? Also, since most of us don't own, or have access to, an OED, would it be possible to have another word verifying source (other than the Scrabble Dictionary), such as Webster's? Thanks. Can someone please give me the site of Webster's Dictionary, if we are going to use that as a source. Anyway, considering that an entry now has to make sense in an ordinary sentance...most entries will appear everywhere !! As for the scoring...I am amending the rules in the game thread.. Check it out !!

Thanks, Sypher, for the clarification...you have just earned yourself at least one (1) major pre-'scrambled' headache! You're definitely the best! Here's another dictionary link.....gives multiple sources: http://www.onelook.com/ BL

Sypher, it just occurred to me that every single word score on Thursday and Friday of this week will be at least doubled -- simply because there ARE no 7- or 8- letter words from previous games. Do you want to just give everyone the extra points ... or put the database into effect NEXT week, after the longer words have had a chance to settle? Just thought I'd bring this to your attention.

I already kind of guessed that...so whether I give single, double or triple...I might as well leave the rules as they are and not complicate them even more.

I have also realized that 7 and 8 letter words may be hard to find.

Well Sage...it was your idea....LOL. That is why I only went to Six and worked it back down to 4 by the end of the week... Let's put it to a vote .... If anyone thinks 7 and 8 letters will be too hard....please say YAY !! Then I will put the 5 & 4 letter days back... Let's Vote !!
