In Western Europe and the US the term Serbo-Croat (or Serbo-Coatian) is widely used for the language(s) spoken by the Serbs and the Croats and implies that they speak essentially the same language.

Recently, however, I have been told that the term is (1) not used by Serbs or Croats themselves, (2) is considered Yugoslav propaganda and (3) is regarded as offensive by many Croats and Serbs.

Does anyone know?

I've posted this question here and not in AFT as there is probably no simple, factual answer.

Serbs and Croats historically don't get along at all, so they do not refer to their language as Serbo-Croatian. This page on wikipedia makes good reading if you haven't done so already. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serbo-Croatian_language

Many thanks. Yes, I have read the Wikipedia article, and that prompted to ask those questions ...
