A space elevator is closer to reality than ever. The problem is to have a cable strong but not too heavy. I wonder if it would be possible to have segments attached to floating platforms filled with gas and kept stable by computerised jets. That way the whole cable would not be taking all the weight. I guess the size of the platform to hold the ammount of helium or hydrogen may be a problem. Perhaps a pipe along the cable could transmit gas or superheated air. Any thoughts?
