This thread is for anything PYRAWORD related.
Chat Mar./01 was getting rather long.
Here's a link to it

Let me take a second to once again thank those of you who have played/tried PYRAWORD since its inception.
I think it's a fun game, and everyone's participation is an integral part.

May 1st begins a brand new MATCH, so all scores will be zeroed.
Now's a great time to come on in and build with the rest of us.

GTHO4 - I guess I missed that one.

SYPHER - Your challenge of GT's word in MATCH 3 was successful. That came close to being the deciding factor of the MATCH.

I'm still playing with idea of updating the rules this month/week.
I also had a couple of new ideas.
One was a bonus MATCH, wherein all entries must be part of a recognizable proper name. (Someone that at least one other player has heard of)
example round:
ALI (Baba)
ALDA (Alan)
ALLAN (Edgar _ Poe)
etc...

Watch for that to appear at sometime.

I'm also toying with the idea of giving more points than 2, according to how many letters the BASE WORD has. (BASE WORD means the last word played)
Something like;
If BASE WORD is 9 letters or less = 3 points +1 for every one under 9
If BASE WORD is 13 letters or more = 3 points +1 for every one over 13

-OR- maybe have a random number (from 8-14) at the start of every ROUND and if the BASE WORD is the same length as that, then there is a bonus 1/2 point...

-OR- some combo of those two ideas...

ok then

it's also help if I knew how to copy and paste correctly, on a consistent basis

(did it end up making any difference? if I didn't stuff it up I think Sypher was still the winner)

I'm challenging ZURUCK
Allwords.com gives translations into other languages, which is exactly what "zuruck" is, foreign. The german word for "back".
Let me know if you have any defence GT.

sorry mate, just saw this .. I made a post in the game thread itself as follows:
quote:
jw, no worries
onelook is set at definitions in English at this end as per the rules, and zuruck came up with that setting .. just checked and it still comes up; you may need to revisit the rules and amend if needed
while I'm here: does the expression 'definitions in English' mean something else? let me know next time you log on

Hey George....I agree with you on the principal that the word was found using 'English Only' on Onelook.com BUT and this might change the whole argument....if you look closely at your word.....Zurück. Notice the middle letter is one of those funny U's. So, in your entry, you actually had to change more then one letter....

What do you think ?

mate, I agree with you, so I checked my settings and it said 'definitions in English' which was weird as I'd never heard of the word, plus it looked funny .. the beauty of onelook.com with that setting, in the payraword rules, was that it determined what was in and what was out, it was the one and only, and the final, arbitrator. I don't mind which way jw jumps as long as we don't end up with a can of worms as to what is in and what is out. I remember a challenge last month (or was ity the month before) against a new player's word which was in the OED but not in onelook.

The English language takes in so many words from all other cultures (a lot of other cultures e.g. Latin, Greek, OE etc), and calls them its own, that if you put two linguists in a room together you'd get 3 different answers as to whether the word was foreign or was English, much like when you put 5 accountants in a room with a set of books and you end up with 9 different answers.

It's a shame that Onelook has that one flaw.
I think it acts like a search engine and simply scours all those other dictionary sites.
The problem is, is that ALLWORDS.COM has foreign words, in their definitions.
Therefore, you get a strictly german word "zuruck", as a "hit" for a search of "definitions in English".
So, I will have to edit the rules, to sayh something like.
Valid words must be found under "DEFINITIONS IN ENGLISH", and must NOT be SOLELY FROM ALLWORDS.com.

naw that doesn't sit right with me.

If only a user could omit ALLWORDS from the search string. hmm..

I will think on exactly how to word the change.

Do you guys agree with me that zuruck breaks the rules?
I hate to complicate things, but at the same time, it doesn't seem right to allow only the foreign words that ALLWORDS.com has in their definitions.
might as well just say use all dictionaries, but that would be sad.
i like to think players use their brains rather than relying solely on ONELOOK for words.
If we open up other languages, it doesn;t put everyone on an even level. English words are what we're aiming for here. Too bad English words are really foreign words "anglicized".
We could use another source
The only other one I would like is DICTIONARY.COM.
oh I just don;'t know.
I'l sleep on it and read any thoughts from you 4 other players in the morning.

jw, we need to continue to keep the rules simple,
if one of the search engines in onelook 'definitions in English' is unreliable then it's just a small amendment to the rules .. validity checks are onelook.com EXCEPT anything which comes out of allwords.com .. how's that sound

ya, GT. I think something like that is the best way.
Simplicity in the rules is the goal, for sure.

Hi Pling..! I found the word in 'The New Shorter Oxford English Dictionary'. So There...!

Whoever chose onelook as the main source of words is depriving some poor village of it's idiot...

Hi Scott...the reason OneLook.com is the official source for this game is that it is a source that everyone can check. When the game first started, I was using the Oxford English Dictionary and coming up with words that did not show up in Onelook.....only problem to that was not everyone could get to use the OED, so the rules were amended that only One source is correct...if it is not there it will not be valid.

Therefore your entry is Invalid. No-one is doubting your entry is an actual word....just that according to the rules your word is invalid because it does not show up on Onelook.com......Sorry
