Knowing you and probably Bridelady...you will come up with a name that is sooooo weird just because it was a characters name....

So, just because of that and anyone else who exploits that....NO WEIRD NAMES !! Nice and Simple !!

At the risk of being set about with the wet noodles, do you really think that "No weird names" is a clear definition of what is and isn't acceptable? For example you thought "Win" was weird, whereas it is certainly not unusual in Scotland. I thought "Alabama" was weird because I'd never heard of it as a girl's name, whereas you thought it was quite acceptable.

As a suggestion, how about a name is OK if it appears as 3 different film characters plus it appears on 3 different baby-naming websites as well. Would that get rid of dodgy entries??

Who, me?

I'm not peeking around the corner anymore. I'm peeking over your desk trying to be vewy vewy quiet so your boss won't hear me rummaging around your desk looking for the pink flamingo sticks to stir the drinks mama.

You cutie, JoJo!!! Didn't you hear the news? My boss is under the desk with us now - she's so fed up with our new exec, she even buys some days!!!!! Welcome back!!!
I'm mad at myself - Annie, consider yourself lucky!!! In looking for something today, I just found out that the real name of your entry earlier this week stops at just "Ruby." Ah, a challenge missed! Pour me another, heavy on the rum!!!

You're right, mama, but there are soooooo many sites that have the song title in its entirety, it'd be a tough call!

Speaking of tough calls, Sypher.....

quote:
....I am gonna disregard that challenge purely on the fact that BL is lucky to get away with her entry....

I don't consider my entry of Love as 'lucky' (or dodgy), rare as it may be (and certainly not my first choice for a girl's name). There are women named Love here in the States. Jennifer Love Hewitt, who goes by Love, was given the name by her mother whose best college friend was named Love.

quote:
Somali & Bridelady - Three words....'KNOCK IT OFF'.

TEE HEE....I really got a chuckle out of that one!

Much as I hate to back-up BL I have to agree with her about her challenge yesterday - she should get the points for that. I must also take the blame for saying the name was Win when it was apparently Love - more transatlantic misunderstandings!! LOL

I think we should remember that we´ve got people from all over the world here and from various different backgrounds. Meaning that what may be considered weird by one person may be perfectly acceptable to the next. Names in themselves are a slippery subject, what with various spellings, ethnic backgrounds and all.

This week´s topic was vague to begin with. To help sort out the grey areas, I asked a few questions at the beginning of the week...of which only one was answered. Alexandria Good Time as Sypher´s first entry was the example I was following. Obviously, it led me to believe the song did NOT have to be about a particular girl. As far as I´m concerned, Alexandria is a city in Egypt. The correct form of the name, if you want to get choosy, is Alexandra (no i).
That´s not to say it doesn´t exist as a girl´s name, it´s just a little obscure.

Which brings me right back to my initial point! LOL
I think Somali´s idea is good, to be able to confirm the name with sites. If I find Darling listed in three of them, however, I want my points back!

BTW, anyone ever heard the name Guiomar for a girl before???

In my own defense, I forgot to add that I still haven´t gotten the italics in bold down yet (as you can see by my first entry)...so if it´s ok, I´ll just use the italics (no bold) in my entries.

Okey Dokey...nice and easy...Fortunata, you will not be getting your extra 10 points as Annie's challenge on your entry was disregarded. You got your points for the entry and that was that.
Bridelady, my apologies...I thought your girl's name was 'Win' as Somali had said and not 'Love'. Yes, I know that is a girl's name...You will also get your extra 10 points for the challenge on Mamaja's entry, which means Mamaja loses who entry points for yesterday. Sorry

Any more questions ? Nope....Good !! LOL

Only one challenge and that failed due to the unusual name in the entry. Saying that, the other name was correct as well (Rose).

Sypher this is the reason I knew it was ok to use my entry.

When I said I wanted my points back, I was referring to the points for the entry..not the ones for the challenge. LOL
I thought you were disregarding my entry altogether.

I agree with Annie. You said "Roses" was acceptable at some point. She should get her points.

Now, as for Love, I had no idea it was a girl´s name. I thought it was a surname. See? You learn something new every day!

I love it, Jo!!!! PapaKa would too - I think we've sung it a few times at our house!!!! That and our theme song, "Happy to be stuck with you!" (Papa also very lovingly sings that one "If you want to be happy for the rest of your life, never make a pretty woman your wife. So from my personal point of view, get an ugly girl to marry you." It's a joke and he is very quick to let me know that - but my paybacks are with the fly on his head!!!)
Pour me another round - It's raining like a son of a buck, and I have to go out and drive home in it, so I need a drink!!!!

JoJo, I had not heard of that one, but I'll bet he has - or thought that one up himself a time or two!!!!
Happy Friday everybody!!!!
Got one kid snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef today, the other heads out to London Monday. Anyone want to rent a 3-year-old so PapaKa and I can go on a second honeymoon? Oh, never mind - we don't have any money left anyway!
