Just watched these two, and trying to decide which wins out. Cary Grant wins hands down over Bing Crosby as Dexter, and I think I'm going with Frank Sinatra over James Stewart as Mike. The rest, well, not sure. What do you think?

Oh, and Grace Kelly's wardrobe wins for sure.

I think it is Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn and Jimmy Stewart all at their very best. I liked High Society, but I think The Philadelphia Story is one of the ten best movies of all time.

I enjoyed some of the songs of "High Society" like "Well Did You Evah" or "Now YOu Has Jazz", but overall I have to agree with bubblesfun, "The Philadelphia Story" is one of the best comedy movies ever made!

Philip Barry, author of the original play wrote the part of Tracy specifically for Katherine Hepburn and she also starred in it on Broadway. Her C.K. Dexter Haven on stage was Joseph Cotten, don't know, but I can't really see him in this part.

Anway, Hepburn, Grant, and Stewart made a perfect trio imho and I'd also pick "The Philadelphia Story" over "High Society", even though I think I preferred Celeste Holm as Liz Imbrie.

Normally I like Jimmy Stewart, and normally I don't like Frank Sinatra at all, so I'm a little surprised at how much I preferred Sinatra in the role of Mike. Or perhaps it's more that I preferred the character of Mike in "High Society" - he's a little more raffish, less stuffy, less naive.

I agree that Celeste Holm did the wisecracking Liz perfectly - she looked the part so well, too.

Cary Grant was magnificent in his role - I've always thought so, but once I saw Bing Crosby, um, not as good, it really comes home how great he is.

It was wonderful watching the two leading ladies - Hepburn really is the better actress, but Grace Kelly sure does have the ice princess down pat. As I mentioned above, she has the better wardrobe, too - that thing Hepburn was wearing in the library has to be one of the worst outfits I've ever seen.

Must have been pretty easy writing the screenplays - so much of the dialogue is identical, and must be direct from the play.

OK, I am making my husband sit through a double feature of the movies tonight. He blames this on you, Agony!
