Ok, it looks like my sidekick, Sypher, is off doing something else at the moment.

Let's start out with a general question, so just we can get a feel for what everyone likes.

The question is twofold:
1) What is your favorite type of music? and
2) Under that category, who is your favorite singer, band, etc?

Actually enjoy all types of music, from classical to classic rock. Being a product of the late 60's, early 70's, I suppose classic rock is my favorite. Brings back memories (at least what I can remember) of college. Favorite groups/artists include

-Dan Fogelberg
-Alan Parsons Project
-Styx
-Genesis/Phil Collins
-Supertramp
-Chicago
-Boston
-Bob James
-Lynyrd Skynyrd
-Doobie Brothers

Haven't really been listening to much music lately (Spending too much time on trivia web sites.)

Gosh, how can I pick a favorite? I listen to and enjoy almost all music. The radio station I tune into the majority of the time plays alternative music. I love the blues. I recently became friends with a 76 year old jazz/blues musician who wrote a song for me.
Can you believe I met him while playing trivia The music I listen to depends on my mood. My music collection is very diverse.
I can't really pick a favorite type of music, but I would have to guess my favorite band overall is Pink Floyd. I have a 24K gold cd of "Wish You Were Here". It's the treasure of my cd collection. For Terry, another Canadian band I like is Tragically Hip. I have their cd's "Fully, Completely" and "Road Apples".

My favorite Canadian band is Blue Rodeo. Rock/country sort of sound.. quite unique. They're playing near here soon, so I'll have to go see them in concert

Most of the time I listen to classical music and opera--because I enjoy it and because I generally am doing something else while I am listening to music. I find classical a relaxing, non-intrusive background while I work.I find opera the most deeply moving music and it can carry me to heights of sheer ecstacy. But
basically I love most music and I particularly enjoy jazz, country, folk, Broadway and ballads (particularly Streisand,Sinatra, Peggy Lee and Ella Fitzgerald). I'm not into any of the really current groups--but I've got an open mind.

Pink Floyd

Police
Bob Marley

Current Faves:
Everclear

Exception:
There is no better vocalist in music today than Lauryn Hill. I just wish she'd do more singing and less rapping.

Oh dear.... a favorite?

well....

I listen to so many types of music it's really hard to pick favorites. Under classical, I'd start with Beethoven's Ninth Symphony; Orff's 'Carmina Burana'; Mendelssohn's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', Mahler's Second Symphony; Arvo Pärt's 'Te Deum' just to name a few.

World Music:
Celtic - Enya, Loreena McKennitt, and Leahy
Australian (Aboriginal) - Nomad
Native American - Tokeya Inajin, Walela, Ulali, Carlos Nakai
Greek - Yanni (yes, he's Greek)
Miscellaneous - Nicholas Gunn, Hilary Stagg, Forbidden Forest, Gary Stadler, and others too numerous to name.

Can't forget the opera! For singers, I like Maria Callas, Mirella Freni, Joan Sutherland, Marilyn Horne and I can't remember the men's names! (no, NOT Pavarotti or Domingo). Hey.. I'm a soprano... of COURSE I'd remember the women's names. =P

Operas: Bellini's 'Norma', especially the aria "Casta Diva'. Delibes' 'Lakme', especially the Flower Duet. And of course, there are many more.....

Do you like any Hawaiian music? One of my favorites is Keali'i Reichel's "Kawaipunahele." Beautiful! I just love his voice.

Iz does an interesting Hawaiian version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." In fact, if you've ever seen the EToys commercial that's out right now, that's the intro to it that they're playing. Sounds like someone singing "oooh oooh oooh ooooooooh." (hard to type the sound, but I'm hearing it in my mind, so I'm doing the best I can!) One of the commercials is a boy and his mother walking along the rocks at the ocean. He stops and looks at the fish in a tidal pool. Later that evening, she logs onto Etoys.com and orders him goggles. The next scene is him using the goggles to see the fish. You know which one I'm talking about? Anyway, listen to the music next time.

And, get some of Reichel's music. Superb!

I would have to say that I am very eclectic in my tastes but I have my favorite categories of music that I listen to the most.

Jazz is probably my absolute favorite:
1) My absolute favorite in jazz is Pat Metheny !! He is my hero. I always tease that when I grow up I'm going to play guitar like him. (Unfortunately, I am grown up and only play 4 chords).

2) Lyle Mays: Best known as Metheny's keyboardist. However, as a soloist he is incredible, sometimes lush and romantic sometimes distant and disjointed. His music is very interesting.

3) Dave Brubeck: Simply the master of the piano !!

Pop:
1) Dan Fogelberg: I find his music complex and interesting. Not known for being terribly optimistic, he writes some intriguing things. However, he does sing one incredibly optimistic song called "Magic Every Moment" that I just adore !!!
2) James Taylor: Love his music
3) Annie Lennox: What a voice !!! Like her post-Eurythmics stuff the best. However, the latest Eurythmics Cd is awesome !
4) Mike and the Mechanics; My absolute favorite group. They simply were terrific. My favorite member is the late, great paul Young who had an incredible voice.

Rock: Here I will show my age
1) Styx: I love their music. I have never been much on their theatrics but love their music especially when they let loose and rocked. My favorite member is Tommy Shaw
2) Boston: Great stuff !!

Classical:
1) Igor Stravinsky's Firebird is a piece that I can listen to a thousand times and still get something out of it. This is my second favorite ballet.
2) Aaron Copland: Appalachian Spring-it was our wedding march and still my favorite ballet of all time.

This month I are mostly listening to Felix Da Housecat, Derrick Carter, Daft Punk, FischerSpooner, Ladytron and Kraftwerk (as per any other month).
Oh, and any rock music that, well, ROCKS (take a bow The Stooges and Primal Scream especially)!

Hmmmmm, I'm still smarting over that old people's music bit there....but I understand you.
One time one of my fortysomething friends was taking his daughter and her friend somewhere and they were talking about Madonna's new video with the panther.
"Yeah, she's really cool with that panther..."
"Oh yeah, not bad for her age...she's pretty old.."
"She must be about forty..."
My friend said, "do your kids do this to you?"
"All the time my friend."

I'm fortunate to have open minded kids for music though. They prefer R and B stuff right now, especially the little one, and their favorite TV show is the one where they invite about 12 people make stars of them then eliminate them one by one. I keep asking them "how can you guys watch that..they get their hopes up then dash them on the rocks?" My son can dance and is often requested to do his trick, a rap dance with his legs behind his neck..it's pretty funny.
My daughter likes most of the people on your list LilSpikey, I think you're in the same age range. But she also can sing Andrea Boccelli and did this number at a party recently, "Vivo per lei" with both voices and the whole party was amazed. My kid has been singing on stage ever since she was little and nobody pushed her!
She can sing jazz numbers too, "Cry me a River".
As she's American and French both, they don't know that so they think her English is really cool.
Back in the States she used to play parts and sing on stage too. She once played a street urchin in a play for the homeless at her school and it was touching.

Being eclectic like me would be good for them if they continue in the arts.

This is a little tricky, innit?
I prefer a lot of the old school stuff. I'm talking Doors, Kinks, Beach Boys, Beatles, the Clash, Velvet Underground, Elvis Costello, and that kinda scene. As far as new stuff goes, how 'bout Powderfinger, Spiderbait, The Cure (do these guys count as old or new?), Tool, They Might Be Giants, Alex Lloyd, Jeff Buckley (God bless your little soul, muffin!), Radiohead, Muse, PJ Harvey, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Soundgarden, yadda, yadda, yadda. Where the hell would Christy Moore & Luka Bloom fit in there? Anyways, them too!
Having said that, there's not a lot of music I dislike (alhough there is some I absolutely despise!) I have a lot of brothers and sisters, so you get used to it all.

I love two kinds of music and that's it.

Emo and Hardcore/Metalcore/Emocore/Chaos

Hardcore - Adamantium
Emo - Dashboard Confessional

I suggest those that like good guitar lines and a great voice that you download Dashboard Confessional's song - Hands Down. It is unbelievable. just great.

G'day mate,
My favorite tunes would have to come from Fatboy Slim, David Bowie and a band I'm really trying to find more about here down under - The Beautiful South - they've only released two songs in Aus and one of them "Perfect 10" woiuld be my favorite - love dance, remixes and mild techno' also partial to retro 80's. Love the UK music scene but battling with it a bit living Down Under where we seem to be two years behind.

I also love 80's hair metal (no, really):
