Okay,

I've read the posting on best soundtrack, but I feel that best film score is more interesting. I love a good film score, but have found that lately even the best film composers are starting to repeat their old music.

My choice for best film score ever is the score for Conan The Barbarian. I know, sounds like an odd choice, but believe me this score is AMAZING!

Practically any score by Bernard Herrmann, especially his scores for Hitchcock, the Harryhausen fantasies and Citizen Kane. Also, David Raskin's Forever Amber, Waxman's Sunset Boulevard and Night and The City, Korngold's Robin Hood and any film noir or epic score by Miklos Rozsa. And I include the film scores of Allen Gray and Brian Easdale for Powell and Pressburger.

I'll second that pick for nearly any score by Bernard Herrmann.

I love the score of all the Universal horror films of the '30s and '40s. "The Mummy" had some great music lurking about.

Not sure if anyone has seen the flick, but Linda Hamilton's cheesy mid-'80s "TAG- The Assassination Game" had a fantastic earworm-ing score that I wish would have made it to record. A cool jazz-funk score and the ending theme knocks me out.

A lot of great soundtrack music never makes it to vinyl or cd. There's a chilling score to "Donnie Darko" but one of the best themes never made it to the soundtrack. A licensing issue, perhaps. Just recently a cd was issued containing music from films by director Hal Hartley. I'm anxious to obtain a copy, his films have some marvelous songs and score to them.

Both "Walking Tall" and -don't laugh at me, now- "Cheech & Chong's Next Movie" had some great soul and rock tunes that should have been radio hits. Neither film had a proper soundtrack nor is any information available about finding who performed the songs. Phooey on the film and music industries when they let great film songs and score go unrecorded for the public to enjoy (away from the movie screen, that is).

Perhaps cliche, but one of my favorite film scores of all time is from Last of the Mohicans. Maybe not the best film in the world, but the imagery and score are so stunning. That part of North Carolina is absolutely one of the most beautiful places in America and the score echos those breathtaking views.

My favorite would have to be "Ragtime", orchestrated by Randy Newman. It was the perfect score as it didn't overwhelm the movie but nicely encouraged it along. Great score, Great sounds, Great music. And the movie was pretty good, too.

Well, I've always loved Marc Shaiman's work in both the "Addams Family" movies and "American President." The scores he wrote for those movies were absolutely gorgeous and were perfectly suited for each movie.

Rachel Poortman's music for "Chocolat" is great as well - although it's a bit repetitive at times, it does a good job of tying the movie together.

And I love the scores for the "Star Trek" movies - especially the sixth one - the music for the opening credits send shivers down my spine!

My personal favorite film score is from "Cinema Paradiso."

I agree that Lord of the Rings is the best.
