I played in a band for a few months called "Opus Fluke" that came from a series similar to the "Lord of the Rings" called the Gormenghast trilogy.
It didn't last long, but it was interesting.
I would find it almost impossible to tell you what sort of genre it was!
Most of us came from Jazz and Rock backgrounds, there were two percussionists, I played keyboards and flute.

The most unique name I’ve heard most recently was when my friend played a CD by a girl named AVRIL. It’s the French word for April but I’ve never heard it used as a name. Maybe they have a lot of women named Avril in France. I think it’s cool. I’ve heard some silly names too: Joan of Arkansas, Wrath of Grapes and Half Man, Half Biscuit. My all time favorite band name is the Testostertones.

By the way, Avril isn't used much at all for a woman's first name in France. I've heard it used in English more often.
This is because for many years, because of the Napoleonic code, you couldn't give a person a name that wasn't a name of a saint or a name that was used, and this was the month, not a saint. One exception would be "August" but otherwise they wouldn't let you.
Maybe she was Canadian.
There was a weird bandnames thread here that had the strangest things! Don't know what happened.

Actually, a lot of my favourite bands have really weird names (King Cobb Steelie, Blinker the Star, The Dead Milkmen, MC 900 ft Jesus)... ....but the weirdest band name I have ever heard is Bruno Gerussi's Medallion. Anyone in Canada will remember that Bruno Gerussi was that hairy actor who starred in the most depressing Canadian show of all time--'The Beachcombers'. Anyway, Gerussi always sported a cheesy gold medallion. The band must have been watching too much CBC. I gave them points for having a sense of humour though, and actually bought their first album. If you ever see it in the bargain bin, don't buy it--even if it's 99 cents. ![[Roll Eyes]](images/icons/rolleyes.gif)

Strange magnetic forces are making me post here, did you see the cool number you've got today Magpie? 123!
One wonders how many bands are named for some odd thing that the person sees when he's looking for a name. Now this fellow looked down at his hirsute chest and saw the gold medaillon lying there and thought "what a great idea!" Good thing he wasn't in the bathtub, don't you think?
Well maybe the "Talking Heads" were named for someone noticed peoples heads bob.
We have some great quizzes here on the subject if I recall, and I should! [ 05-16-2002, 03:15 AM: Message edited by: Bruyere ]

Have you ever heard the band Finger Pickin’ Good? I’ve heard them, the Beverly Beer Bellies and Rubber Band. I’ve heard of Avril too! That’s so cool that someone else here has heard of her. I like that name too. Did you like her music? I think she could the best thing to happen to female rock in a long time. Have you seen her website at www.avril-lavigne.com? She looks totally different than what I thought she would look like. Another cool name for an artist is Dido, but it’s not as pretty a name as Avril.

Hi, normally I'd discourage this type of link but as she's not as well known, just read the thread in the music section for new members, and we'll let this one stay.
She's pretty!
You see? I didn't miss my guess, as Avril wouldn't be used for a name here in France and in Canada it is.

The first few names that pop up in my head are:
1) The Flying Embryo's - A Dutch punk band (check out their website...) 2) The Leningrad Cowboys - A funny band from Finland 3) Boiky Boiky Band - My own band (in the past, that is) 4) Dead Kennedys - An American punkband, still think it's a strange name for a band 5) Splodgenessabound - A British punkband in the 80's
If I think harder, I'll will remember certainly more strange names.

My friends had a band called Skankin' Homer. I always thought it was a funny name. Another one is On Beyond Zebra.
I just heard "Complicated' by Avril Wossname(can't remember her last name, I lapsed into Pratchett) I love it! I've downloaded a few of her songs, they are all pretty good. I may have to go out and buy the CD.

from australia: Diana ah Naid - she's a great artist, guitar & vox and her name is kinda' palindromic.
I was a band called (I hired extras for shows) called "be'•a•tris" (the "a" was actually a schwa), basically "beatrice" spelled phonetically. All so we could introduce our selves, "we're Beatrice" like the food conglomerate's commercial.
"Burnt Weeny Sandwich," "Weasels Rip My Flesh," "Studio Tan," and "Sleep Dirt," from Frank Zappa
"Y U I ORTA" from Ian Hunter and Mick Ronson (get it?, think 3 Stooges)
and one of my favorite bands from Canada: "the Arrogant Worms," they're fantasic musicians and humorists

always liked the name "We've got a fuzzbox and we're gonna use it". Hillarious punk-wave women band of the 80's

One of my favorites: "Country Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks"
One of their best songs, "How Can I Miss You When You Won't Go Away?"

I love Splodgenessabound! Never heard of the band but excellent name! I reckon the most 'original' name for a CD that I own is Fush Yu Mang and I don't even want to know what on earth it means.... probably something unspeakably vulgar.... The band is Smash Mouth by the way, not so unknown I guess.....

There is a very good Icelandic band that I listen to named Sigur Ros, of course it probably makes sense if translated but it sounds a tad strange to me.
Another good band I have always wondered about is Led Zeppelin. I can only assume they meant an air ship when they said Zeppelin, and although their name was strange their music was definately top notch
