Don't know if there's ever been a post on this before, but what was your first record and was there a story behind it:

It comes in 2 parts, firstly what was the first record you ever got - present, stolen, inherited??

Mine was the album "Ant Music" by Adam and the Ants. It was a birthday present from a very cool aunt of mine and all my mates at school were jealous.

Secondly, the first record you bought for yourself: Mine was a 12" single by a band that nobody had heard of at the time called Wet Wet Wet and the single was "Wishing I was Lucky". I bought it with my first wage from my first full time job in 1986 from that moment on I was hooked!!

Hi, the first record that was ever bought for me was, I think, the soundtrack to Oliver.

The first I ever bought for myself was My Sweet Lord by George Harrison (the first time around).

Jub and I went to the "Golden Mile", and outdoor mile long strip mall (on both sides of the road) in Toronto when I was about 11(?), and with my own money I purchased my first "45" from a hole-in-the wall record store. It was "Moon River" on one side, I think, and "Can't Get Used to Losing You" on the other, by Andy Williams. I think I paid 99 cents. I felt very independent and chuffed! They also had the CHUM 1050 top 50 songlist every week and you could pick it up free there! Yes, a pleasant memory of sorts! [Big Grin]

The first record ever purchased for me as a present was "My Life" by Billy Joel. It was a 45. My father bought it for me when I was 5. I used to sing along to that song in the backseat of my Dad's car whenever it would come on the radio. That is why he bought it for me, because he said that he knew I liked it.
The first record I ever purchased with my own money was "Blizzard of Ozz" by Ozzy Osbourne. I was 9 years old and had just earned my first $10 allowance. I remember the smell of the vinyl when I got home, opened it, and put it on my stereo. I also remember the sound of the needle right before the record starts to play.
The last CD I purchased was "Dark Days" by Coal Chamber. If you don't have it, get it. It is a supersonic masterpiece.
P.S. Check out my top 50 Metal,Rock,Alternative, and Punk list. These albums are an essential part of my life.

Well, actually I think I got a good start! The first two records I bought from my own money were "lionheart" by Kate Bush and "the Freewheelin' Bob Dylan"! I must admit that I only bought it because of Blowin' in the wind and never listened to anything else on it (not even don't think twice..) [Embarrassed] . I was ten then.. and six years later, when the dust was already quite thick on the CD, i got into Dylan and since then I love it!! [Big Grin]

The first CD I bought was Eiffel 65's album "Europop". It has not been so long huh... Three years? And now I've got about 100 CDs... Time flies fast!

My first was, umm, hmmm, well I had a whole bunch of cassettes but if it had to be CD's I'd say is was from greenday, the album with "I hope you had the time of you'r life". That was about 4 years ago.

Golly, the first record that I can remember buying was "Dance With Me Henry" by Georgia Gibb. The next was,I think, either "Music Music Music" by Teresa Brewer or "Rock And Roll Waltz" by Kaye Star. Big ole 78's. Does any one else remember those old greats? Those were much simpler days. Not especially better, just simpler. [Cool]

The first record I got was a ep (I think):
Pseudo Echo - Funky Town [Big Grin] [Big Grin]
and the first record I ever bought:
Roy Orbison - Mystery Girl [Big Grin] [Big Grin]
The last cd I bought (just for a bit of closure):
They Might Be Giants - Mink Car

...and I think that rather scarily says an awful lot about me! [Eek!] [Eek!] [Eek!]

Adam Ant (Prince Charming) was the first LP given to me because a friend and his mother both bought him a copy and for some reason instead of taking one copy back and swopping it for a whole new record, they passed it my way... yay me!

First album bought with my own pennies was a cassette and was by Nik Kershaw called Human Racing I think... it was his first album anyway and I lurved him with a capital L....

I can't remember the actual first one that I was given but it may have been a "Sesame Street" one ... that's the earliest I can remember.

The first one that I bought with my own money was U2 WAR ... but there is a family dispute about it, my brother thinks it's his but I know it's not because you never forget you're first record.

Nik Kershaw ... oh dear, we're dating ourselves here aren't we? I was mad on Howard Jones and my best friend was into Nik Kershaw so we swapped records all the time ... I now have "I won't let the sun go down on me, I won't let the sun go down" running through my head [Big Grin]

A tricky one this....

I think the first record I bought was either Madness "Baggy Trousers" or something like that. I can't really remember, but that sounds about right! Before that I did get the Tubeway Army album before that as a gift from my Aunt. "Replicas" it was called, if I remember correctly. I used to borrow records from the local record library, which was wondrfully well stocked. Very useful for a musically inclined Primary School kid!

In fact I confess to having recently been to an 80s concert where Howard Jones was performing! Oh and he was very good indeed! Got us all singing along... oh the shame!! [Embarrassed]

Now you show me a concert where Nik Kershaw is part of the line up and I am soooo there!!

Oh dear, what were we thinking???? Nik Kershaw is bald??? I'm not quite sure what Howard jones looks like! And did anyone notice Holly Johnson (Frankie goes to Hollywood) ... he looks like a respectable bussinessman now! And it appears that the man from Dead or Alive is now a woman ... wonders will never cease! Thanks Amberg [Big Grin] for the site, I've had a great nostaligic time ... off to find my old record collection. hehe.

My absolute first record was Roy Orbison - 'Pretty Woman'. First Gift, I think it was 'Beatles '65'. Actually, I am pretty impressed with SadEyedLady, whose first records were from Kate Bush and Dylan. Great.

When I was really little we had one of those stand alone record players with a built in speaker, a philco I think. We had a bunch of disney 45 rpm singles, Mickey Mouse Club stuff. The records were pressed out of bright yellow vinyl and they were pretty much indestructable. My favorite of those was one called "The Hawaiian War Chant", drums, tribal chanting and Hawaiian steel guitar.

First record I bought with my own money was a single of the Beatles "She Loves You". I forget what the B side was. Bought it at the Thrifty drug store down the street from my house. This was in '63 or '64, I think. I do remember it was before they came to America and appeared on Ed Sullivan's show.

First album I ever bought was the soundtrack to "Help!". It was a really big deal to get to play this on my Dad's stereo system. I think he thought that Rock and Roll would blow a vacuum tube or something!

Oldest record that I still have is an original pressing of "Meet The Monkees". The only excuse I have for this is that I was only eight when I bought it. Live and learn.

Ok folks, I've found my twin, I know that Tim and I grew up in the same geographical area, the same valley, but shucks, the Thrifty drugstore? I even had the image of the little cone thing you put into the middle of the records on the turntable for my "Come Together" record!
Thrifty the drugstore where the ice cream cones were a nickel a scoop?
Now you're going to tell me you shopped at Lucky's supermarkets too!
Pretty soon you're gonna tell me we danced in the fifth grade rec room to the Archies and "Sugar Sugar"!

As to the Disney thing, the Hawaiian War chant was cool, when I was a student teacher in Hawaii that was the little kids' big number in the school production and they got to do a routine with sticks. I have pictures of it in my album, because that is a great number for kids to do!
You'd think it would be hokey and in the real Hawaiian setting near Punchbowl a former volcano, it just suited the setting.

My dad told me that if I could hook up the stereo under the house, that I could run a line to my room and he'd get me some old speakers. So I took the wires from the living room, got into the crawl space, braved the black widows, took it into a hole in the floor we drilled, learned how to use a soldering iron to do the wiring and bingo! My own speakers!
So though I'd have to run in and change records, it was cool.

Tim, come on, admit you liked the Tiki room chant at Disneyland!

Yeah, they had those nickel cones at the Thrifty Drug we went to, corner of Shaw and West in Fresburg. In the summer that was a good way for my Mom to get rid of us for a while. She'd give us six nickels (I have five brothers and sisters) and send us walking over there for ice cream. A lot of the time one of my youngest brothers would drop the ice cream off his cone onto the floor, but the ladies there were really good about giving a replacement. It got to where they knew us pretty well and the store manager made a rule that we couldn't go into any other part of the store with ice cream. We either had to stand right in front of the ice cream counter, or go outside.

That store was really a great place, they had just about any thing a kid could want. Cheap toys, bike parts, candy, records and the cheapest ice cream in town.

Bought a lot of records there and more than a few of them were "factory seconds", they looked and played like normal albums with one exception; they had a hole punched through the cover, the sleeve and the record, rendering one track on each side unplayable. But they were really cheap, 49 to 79 cents if I remember correctly.

No, we didn't shop a Lucky's back then. Mom shopped at McMillen's at Blackstone and Shaw, and then Foodland in Fig Garden Village, and then later Thriftimart, which was next to Thrifty Drug.

"Sugar Sugar"? Didn't have a copy of that, but I think my sister did. I did have a copy of The 1910 Chewing Gum Company's "Chewy Chewy". Pretty much the same thing, and I think this is where the phrase "Bubble Gum Pop" came from. Dance with you?
I don't think I did. We didn't have dances at the Catholic grade school I went to, St. Anthony's. But I would have wanted to if I had had the chance.

Enchanted Tiki Room? Yeah that was cool. I liked the Swiss Family Robinson's treehouse better, though. It took my parents about an hour to get us all down out of that thing.

Isn't this thread about records, or something?
Sorry for going on so about things Heather and I may have in common, but it's kind of fun to think about this stuff. Any more first record memories out there?

I think everyone who grew up with records realizes how much pleasure you could get out of it, and how much it meant to us!
I mean, we played those Disney things until they went bare!

It's also funny how the memory of a record like that, brings us back.
Your Thrifty drugstore though, took me back to the turntable thingy you had to put in for the forty fives!
I showed my kids a turntable last trip home, because they'd never seen one!
They had cassettes, and now CDs.
