Hmmmm....one Christmas Santa brought me The Bay City Rollers "Dedication." I treasured it like it was gold...hee-hee. The first album that I bought with my babysitting money was Queen's "News of the World." Now that was a great album!!! But when I was about 6 my mom gave me her old record player and all of her 45's....from The Animals to the Supremes. I still have them all

Now look here you lot.... ( [Wink] )... I have just followed amburg's link and I will not have any derogatory comments made about Nik Kershaw! That teenage girl just springs right back up and will not countenance dissent! [Big Grin]

Actually, Howard Jones was at the concert I mentioned above and was really good... he was the first act that really got the crowd going (Oo-ooh Oo-ooh bits in When Smokey Sings were particularly fun!).

Adam Ant was also supposed to be there but the poor thing has stuff going on that meant he couldn't be there... we all missed him...

Ohhhhh, wish he would tour here again. [Frown] Did he sing the same old songs? What is looooovvvvveeeee anyway?

When I was about 13-14 he did come to Australia and was going to be performing in Sydney. My friend and I were going to go, we were so excited, over the moon, we were going to be so adult, our first concert and so on.

But then disaster strikes [Eek!]

... we were in trouble with our parents over this stupid girl who thought we were going to bully her. We weren't. But because she was epileptic (but no seisures for many years) her parents were very protective and had this big meeting with both our parents and the upshot was that we were to be punished .... by not going to the Howard Jones concert.
NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We could have faced any other punishment than that.

(Mum? If you read this I don't want you to think you stuffed up my childhood by not letting us go but let's face it .... you did. [Wink] ) Actually, I hope she doesn't read this because I'm sure she will have a different version and one that, now I'm not riddled with teenage angst, will probably agree with. [Roll Eyes]

I don't know about the first album given to me, but the oldest one I have is Sesame Street Gold. Believe it or not there are no scratches on it, which is amazing seeing that my brother and I listened to it so often. Now my son listens to it.

The first tape I bought for myself with my own money was, Bangles, Different Light. How's that for a child of the eighties.

Now, don't critize yourself for Thriller--the CD is still selling! I loved the music video, remember where Jackson truned into a werewolf and all these zombies were walking around? [Smile]

Hmmmm...first record I ever bought with my own $1.00 was In The Year 25-25 by Yeager and Evans (?), really can't remember for sure who sang it.

First album I ever remember getting as a gift was Rubber Soul by the Beatles--a Long time ago. [Smile] [Smile]

Don't dis Thriller! It's a magical album by an artist at the height of his powers. The sounds may be a bit dated, but it gets my booty shaking! Actually, I never liked it at the time. I thought Michael Jackson was a bit lame, but my opinions have changed over the years. "Off The Wall" is even better! My, how the mighty have fallen.....

The first real music album I owned was the single of "This Ole House" by Shakin Stevens. I was avout three at the time and whenever the song was on the radio or TV I would go CRAZY!

For my seventh birthday, I recieved Madonna's "True Blue" album on cassette! I felt like a real grown-up! Now, more than 16 years later, I have bought it on CD cos I still think it's brilliant!

Oooohhh! Good Question!

I remember it vividly. I was ten years old, and I heard a song on the radio that just stopped me in my tracks. It was Joe Jackson's 'I'm The Man' (I suppose that gives away my age, since it came out in 1979). I'd never heard anything quite like it, and had to have the album. I managed to scrape together enough money (read: beg my parents) and went down to the mall to get it that week. I played it over and over until my family was ready to put me up for adoption. I never did get sick of it. In fact, it is still one of my favourite albums of all time.

This might sound weird, but the first album I bought was when I was five, I got a cassette of Tchaikovski's 1812 ouverture and Swan Lake...I was a weird kid to start with, ok.
The first record I was given as a gift that I remember was Wham!and I listened to it until it was almost transparent.
Good memories!

Well, this is embarrassing. My first single was "These boots were made for walking" by Nancy Sinatra; first album I bought "The Pointer Sisters"; album gift (from a cool aunt too) "Stoney End," from Barbra Streisand. I really asked for the album. She does a Randy Newman cover as well as Joni Mitchell & Laura Nyro. first Classical: "the Mikado" or "Peer Gynt" on the Victrola®

The Pointer Sisters were really good, I miss them. But then again, what I love in music is harmony...
I had the Mills Brothers too...something about brothers and sisters singing well together...

I just heard Michael Jackson's "I'll Be There" on the radio the other day...I said, "wait now, is that him? Man he's got a sweet voice!"
I even...ok this is really embarassing...like the Osmonds! Though I'd never admit it then!

My first album that my grandma went ahead and bought me was Bill Cosby's comedy routines...and guess who got to play God? My friend who did the sketch with me in gradeschool is still laughing about playing Noah and me up on a chair being God in a white bathrobe.
I probably still know some of those routines by heart..."Did you say ooops?"
"Snakes, just give my toes a snakey likka lick" when he puts his feet on the floor and thinks there's a snake under the bed.
No wonder the old stereos had diamond needles on them, we played and played and played those things till they were threadbare!
Laura had a sweet voice too...not unlike Carole King.

I guess I will be telling my age, but the first record I remember buying was "Roses are Red" by Bobby Vinton in 1962. It was around Christmas time that year and my mother gave me a dollar to go buy what I wanted, so I headed to the record dept. and bought the record, which I still have in my extensive record collection. I can't really remember what the first LP I bought.

You should know by now that we don't discriminate on the basis of age and that...if you look at my oldies quiz in lyrics..I've got songs from the 20's to the 70's.

Wasn't it great how a dollar felt like about a twenty now a days?
The other day I gave my kids each a ten Euro bill to buy a CD, and they laughed!

How well I remember. Some of my records have the original price stickers on them. You can still find records at jukebox outlets and thrift stores. As they say another man's junk is another man's treasure.

Remember those eight track cassettes? Man they were big to lug around in your car!

I have a channel here that plays real oldies...I mean, real oldies!
It's really nice.

My son's first record was Aqua. Which I always call Delta and they yell at me...

Yea I remember the 8 track players. Did you ever have to stick a piece of paper on the edge of the tape to make it play correctly? In fact I still have a couple 8 track tapes left in my collection. Guess I keep them around to rmind me of "the good ole days". LOL.

First record I ever owned was a hand-me-down LP from a cousin going off to the army: " The Best of Herman's Hermits." Loved it to death.

First records I ever bought for myself were this group of three 45's one particularly profligate night long ago (99 cents each): "Tie a Yellow Ribbon ('Round the Old Oak Tree)"; "You Are The Sunshine of My Life" (Stevie Wonder); and "Out of the Question" (Gilbert O'Sullivan).

Good question. Thanks for asking.

I remember them!
Remember that chipper little opening on Hang a Yellow Ribbon? Now you've got that stuck in your heads!
THanks for making this your first stop in the forums, so as to save time, welcome..as Copago and I are both in both places.
