Of the nominees I liked Dylan's song the best, but that's just me. I like Dylan, always have. In this case I think it's apparent that the Academy voted the way that most of the audiences would have, they don't exist in a vacuum, they're subject to the same kind of artistic and life influences that the rest of us are. There isn't an Irving Thalberg Award for writers of original songs, so I have to say that a bit of sentimentalism may have crept into the minds of the Acadamy voters as they compared Dylan's work to, oh I don't know, let's say Bjork's. I'm not saying any thing against Bjork, or any of the other nominees, you understand, but when considering their vote for best original song the the Acadamy (who are mainly in their forties, fifties and sixties) couldn't help but consider the length of and the influence that Dylan's career has had on the face of popular music, if not the influence it's had on modern American culture itself. I'd say throwing an old dog a bone can be a good thing, and judging the compositions purely on their artistic merits, it was probably the right thing to do. But that's subjective, isn't it? I think that's really the reason we all watch the Oscars; to see if our version of the truth matches up with theirs.
