The Oscar Night is over and probably a lot of celebrities are in their bed with a headache
But what did you think of the best song winner Bob Dylan and his song things have changed of the Wonder Boys movie? I didn't like that song the most. To me Björks I've Seen It All of Dancer in the dark was the best song. I feel unhappy for her that she didn't win
Nevertheless, when I look the history of the Oscars in this category, some of my all time favorite are 'Streets of Philadelphia' , 'Up where we belong', 'Take my breath away' and 'Theme from Shaft'. The most emotional music I found the soundtracks of 'Platoon' and 'Gladiator'.

How 'bout you?
Tom

I find that often the most commercial songs win. But sometimes an unusual one will win. I had a hard time when "Blaze of Glory" won. I'm not saying it's not a good song but to me an Oscar is for the best the industry has to offer and that song was too commercial for me. The Dylan son was not that commercial but probably based more on his merit and long standing career rather than whether or not it was truly the best song.

Of the nominees I liked Dylan's song the best, but that's just me. I like Dylan, always have. In this case I think it's apparent that the Academy voted the way that most of the audiences would have, they don't exist in a vacuum, they're subject to the same kind of artistic and life influences that the rest of us are. There isn't an Irving Thalberg Award for writers of original songs, so I have to say that a bit of sentimentalism may have crept into the minds of the Acadamy voters as they compared Dylan's work to, oh I don't know, let's say Bjork's. I'm not saying any thing against Bjork, or any of the other nominees, you understand, but when considering their vote for best original song the the Acadamy (who are mainly in their forties, fifties and sixties) couldn't help but consider the length of and the influence that Dylan's career has had on the face of popular music, if not the influence it's had on modern American culture itself. I'd say throwing an old dog a bone can be a good thing, and judging the compositions purely on their artistic merits, it was probably the right thing to do. But that's subjective, isn't it? I think that's really the reason we all watch the Oscars; to see if our version of the truth matches up with theirs.

Honestly, I could live happily without hearing any of the nominated songs again.

I must give props to Bjork for her..um..swan!

Yeah, the swan outfit was pretty cool, but what was up with that flesh colored body suit she was wearing under it? It seemed like it was a couple of sizes too big for her and it looked like it was bagging up around her ankles. For my money, J Lo once again wins the awards show fashion derby. What can she do to top that outfit next year, come out onstage naked from the waist up? I'll be waiting in rapt anticipation.

All I can say is that I still haven't gotten over last year's nominee - "Blame Canada" from the South Park movie.

Sideline - I wonder how much importance musicians put on winning the Best Song Oscar? I would think that winning a Grammy carries more clout in the music industry, and that a Best Song Oscar award winner does not receive the same respect as a Grammy winner.

Oops.. mea culpa. I originally wrote "winner" and not "nominee". The winner was Phil Collins' "You'll Be In My Heart" from Disney's Tarzan.
