For one of the worst covers I have heard in a long time I would like to nominate Wyclef Jean's version of Pink Floyds "Wish You Were Here" - absolutely appalling, why do people do these things?

The worst remake has got to be Britney Spears's "The Beat Goes On". The lyrics were not the same, the words were spoken too fast and the music was too different. I like Britney, but it seems like any song she tries to remake is ruined!!!!!!!! She should have a male singer doing part of The Beat Goes On, like Sonny and Cher did.

Amazing! All this time and I totally forgot about Duran Duran's covers album. Whoever thought that covering Public Enemy's "911 Is A Joke" was a great idea for a bunch of New Romantic fops who wouldn't know what "the funk" was if it sprayed them with an Uzi in a drive-by shooting! Still, I can't hear it without laughing like crazy! I also thought that the charity cover of "Perfect Day" a few years back was a load of old hooey compared to the original. In general, if it ain't broke don't fix it!

Perfect Day is just one of those songs that should never be covered. Once a song has perfection, you should just leave it alone. That should be law... No smilies in this post - I am stone cold serious.

Steps - Chain Reaction It was hideous the first time it was released, and with Steps: O gosh, I need to lie down - it's too horrible!

I have to disagree about chain reaction...I like Steps' version and I also liked the original. In fact, love them or hate them, Steps have manged to cover 3 of my fave songs of all time... Better The devil You Know- Kylie Chain Reaction- Diana Ross I Know Him so Well- Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson Should I be ashamed of these admissions?!!! As a huuuge Mariah fan (unlike some people on this particular thread) I have to say one of the worst covers I've heard is Samantha Mumba massacring All I Want For Christmas Is You...eevn my brother who detests MC admits that in comparion to Samantha's version you're yearning for Mariah's...at least she could reach the notes! Also- with refernce to destiny's Child's Christmas album.. never allow Michelle Williams' weedy voice near O Holy Night again!! Please!!! Merry Christmas everyone!!!

I must also make mention of the remake of You Belong To Me, by Jason Wade on the Shrek soundtrack. He just mumbled to sing it, and the original version by Jo Stafford was so wonderful!

A special Christmas mention must go to well known "Friend Of Dorothy", Cliff Richard for this year's turkey, "Somewhere Over The Rainbow". It's done in some sort of soft-shoe reggae style or something, and is as foul as can be expected from the man who brought us "Mistletoe & Wine". For someone who professes to love Jesus so much, he doesn't half try his best to muck his birthday up for the rest of us.... [ 12-22-2001: Message edited by: SuperFurryAnimal ]

Arf... I knew I would come to this. MARILYN MANSON!!! I like his music, but really... It seems like every single of his remakes is really, REALLY boring... Really!!! I like his music but his remakes are nothing,really... Especially 'Sweet dreams', one of the worst remakes I've heard. Everything is in the opinion but... No, I really don't like this one.

"When A Man Loves a Woman" by Michael Bolton
but "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" by GNR is a close second.
William Shatner's cover of "Mr. Tambourine Man" is another story because it really is from outer space.

I don't know who does it, but not to long ago someone did a cover of Skynyrd's Simple Man, that is equivalent to fingernails scraping a chalk board. Absolutly horrendous.

You all picked good ones, or bad ones, depending on your way of looking at things. I definitely agree with whoever said Bolton doing "When a Man Loves a Woman." Nobody but Percy Sledge can do that song.
Rihanna doing a really screwed up version of "Tainted Love" is pretty high on my ick list. For the love of God, R&B used to have really good, original music, and now, it's nothing but a bunch of samples. I'm way disappointed.

Making me shudder at the moment is the knowledge that Ronan Keating is covering "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls. Does he do original songs anymore? It is so much harder for people to know your music is garbage if you do your own stuff, covering someone else's makes it easier to point out!

I collect Beatles remakes. The good, the bad, and the ugly. Buck Owens remaking "Lady Madonna"(1976) was amusing. Hank Williams, Jr. remaking "Norwegian Wood" (1981) was bad. Ray Stevens remaking "The Fool On The Hill" (1967) was a waste of master tape. But even the really awful ones, are good for a laugh. Even though I don't remember the year of release, Lorrie Morgan's version of "Eight Days A Week" was too awful to be funny.

There is a new CD out covering Pink Floyd's best known songs, done to electronica. Some music shouldn't be touched or remade. My friend's sister brought it over to listen to, we heard one cut, it was attached to a skeet & blown into oblivion.

I am assuming this is not including parody versions such as the Golden Throats series which has actors proving why they chose acting over singing as a career, so I will offer up 3 honest to God remakes that should never have seen the light of day.
I Saw Her (Him) Standing There by Tiffany. Tiffany was the first in a long line of talentless blonde bimbettes that thought they had a voice.
Louis Armstrong "singing" Give Peace A Chance. Stick to Hello Dolly, Louie!
Salt & Pepa doing Twist & Shout. One word...YUCK

Lemmy:
Have you ever heard David Cassidy's version of Please Please Me? That's right, Keith Partridge actually released a LIVE version of PPM.
Sad ain't it?
