Anyone have any good suggestions? We used to have a thread but it's been a long long time.

My favorite song is George Michael's "Like Jesus to a Child", because it gives one hope. That if you've known love once, you'll recognize it the next time.

Music in general has an enormous healing power at times like that.

The other thing I think I've always thought about breaking off with someone, is that the fact that you're seeking a way to feel better is already a good sign. The ones who don't, or who ignore it, or pretend they don't hurt, are in worse shape in my mind.

Indeed,,a great thread, Heather!
How about,,,,"I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor ??

"weren't you the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye
you think I'd crumble
you think I'd lay down and die
Oh no, not I
I will survive
as long as i know how to love
I know I will stay alive
I've got all my life to live
I've got all my love to give
and I'll survive
I will survive "

Yes, it's a good one too my lunar friend.
And I'll tell you one thing too, I'm just about certain that there are very few of us to whom it hasn't happened!

I also recall a great cartoonist here in France with a woman who's been dumped by her man, and she tears up everything that could possibly have belonged to him, then she goes and washes her face and straightens up and he calls and she goes to the trash to glue his pictures together!

Remember the trite old phrase, "it is better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all"....ok ok throw something at me.

No doubt music has a great emotional impact on the listener. Personally I listen to sad music whenever I feel the sting of loves lost.

"Everything" by Lifehouse is a song I listen to whenever I feel that deep pang in my heart. I dont know if it perpetuates the feeling but even if I found out that it did I would still listen to it.

I think that music is a key clue into how someone is feeling. Depending on the music they choose to listen to at that moment can tell you how their feeling.

Sorry about that its a bit off topic but just felt like saying it.

Oh and Heather I dont know if it makes me a pessimist but I never liked that saying before ("it is better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all"). I prefer "Ignorance is bliss".

"Sittn on a Bar Stool,
Actin like a darn fool
Thats what Im'a doin today"

Sittn here drinkin
tryin to keep from thinkin
That I'm boozin my troubles away

Now I couldn't make Her stay
Well dog gone her anyway
She cain't say I didn't try

Pour me another one
I'm finished with the other one
I'm drinkin my baby good-bye

That is just the first verse of a fast paced, Guitar heavy, hard driving country/rock tune called
"Drinkin my baby good-bye"
by the Charlie Daniels Band.

I've played this for a couple of buddies, to kinda give them a kick in the pants. It's a little harder to cling to self pity when listing to a fast paced tune.

Of course if your buying at your local watering hole when you play the song it goes over a little better.

After one pretty bad break-up I remember playing "King of Wishful Thinking" by Go West until my eardrums neary burst

"I don't need to fall at your feet
Just 'cause you cut me to the bone
And I won't miss the way that you kiss me
We were never carved in stone
If I don't listen to the talk of the town
Then maybe I can fool myself..

I'll get over you.. I know I will
I'll pretend my ship's not sinking
And I'll tell myself I'm over you
'cause I'm the king of wishful thinking
I am the king of wishful thinking"

there's really two catergories for these kinds of songs (in my opinion, anyway), and they are:

1. The "I wish I were dead" break up songs
1. Anyone who had a heart - Dusty Springfield
2. Baby plays around - Elvis Costello
3. Nobody's Baby Now - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
4. Last Goodbye - Jeff Buckley
5. Oh! Darling - The Beatles
6. Pale Blue Eyes - The Velvet Underground
7. Kiss me goodbye - Petula Clarke
8. This mess we're in - PJ Harvey (& Thom Yorke)
9. Why does it always rain on me? - Travis
10. Troubled times - Portishead

The "I wish YOU were dead" break up songs:
1. Shutterbug - Veruca Salt
2. Song for the dumped - Ben Folds Five
3. Thirsty Dog - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
4. Kiss Off - The Violent Femmes
5. I wish you were dead - Scheer
6. You Suck - The Murmurs
7. That's what I get - Nine Inch Nails
8. Pushit - Tool
9. Friend is a four letter word - Cake
10. The Sweetest Embrace - Nick Cave

Kenny Loggins' "Wait A Little While" taught me the word patience !!! "Soon as you no longer try, you'll find it staring in your eyes, just forget it, when you let it, it will come to you."

Another Loggins tune: "I Believe in Love"

If you like disco (which I don't): Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive."

Try "I Am the Resurrection" by the Stone Roses, or "Yes" by McAlmont & Butler: "Yes, I do feel better, yes I do, I feel alright. I feel well enough to tell you what you can do with what you've got to offer."

Or for anyone who's upset you "Positively Fourth Street" by Bob Dylan, always makes me laugh and think of my parents who first played it to me.

If you want comfort though and to feel the pain and come to terms with it try Joni Mitchell's "Blue" or Dylan's "Blood on the Tracks". Both about break-ups and both such beautiful, sad, lovely albums that they can't fail to make you feel better.

I know this won't make any sense to anyone but me but....

"Killing in the Name of" Rage Against the Machine

This is my personal favourite, but any Rage song will do. Just listen once through and all of the anger melts away.

This, of course, depends on how bad you want to get over it. Sometimes it feels good to wallow. In that case, Patsy Cline and a bottle of scotch. For good advice, listen to 'Remember the Tin Man' by Tracy Chapman. It's all about getting your heart back.

You Keep Me Hanging On - Supremes, or for a really tortured version, Vanilla Fudge.

"Let me get over you, the way you've gotten over me!"

Lololol:

Don't waste your words, I don't need anything from you,
I don't care where you've been or what you plan to do!!

I am the resurrection and I am the light
I couldn't ever bring myself to hate you as I'd like ;-).

Terrifyingly this song is now 13 years old. Glad you remember it Dan, fantastic band who are now attracting fans who were about 8 when it was released !!!

Depending on how it happened...and who made it happen...I'd suggest You Keep Me Hangin' On - Rod Stewart.

If your really down...and want to stay that way for awhile...try almost anything by Leonard Cohen.

If ya wanna drink it off....It's Quarter to Three..there's no one in the place....'cept you & me.... (don't know the artist). ...also not a good idea!

Everybody Must Get Stoned..........Dylan. Also not good advice, but I just love the raunchy tone!

Walk Away...don't know the artist....Robert Goulet? geez.......... "Walk away............walk on......"

Ya know....why am I picking all depressing tunes?

Martyr.............me?

The Sweetest Embrace - Nick Cave

Our time is done my love
We've laid it all to waste
One thousand moonlit kisses
can't sweeten this bitter taste
My desire for you is endless
and I'll love you 'till we fall
I just don't want you no more
and that's the sweetest embrace of all

To think we can find happiness
hidden in a kiss
Ah, to think we can find happiness
that's the greatest mistake there is
There is nothing left to cling to babe
There is nothing left to soil
I just don't want you no more
and that's the sweetest embrace of all

Ooohhh where did it begin
When all we did was lose
There's nothin' left to win

So lay your weapons down
they serve no purpose in your hands
And if you wanna hold me
then go ahead and hold me
I won't upset your plans
If it's revenge you want
then take it babe
Or you can walk right out the door
I just don't want you anymore
And that's the sweetest embrace of all

Ooohhh where did it begin
When all we did was lose
There's nothin' left to win

It's over babe
And it really is a shame
We are losers you and me babe
In a rigged and crooked game
My desire for you is endless
And I love you most of all
I just don't want you no more
and that's the sweetest embrace of all

I apologise for my tone here but I sometimes get the feeling I'm going to be explaining this for the rest of my life.

BOB DYLAN'S SONG (Titled "Rainy Day Women No's 13 to 25" numbers may possibly be wrong but I think that's right) HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH TAKING DRUGS!!!!!!!!! IF YOU LISTEN TO THE LYRICS, ACTUALLY LISTEN TO ALL OF THEM AND NOT JUST THE HOOK LINE, YOU'LL HEAR THAT HE IS SAYING "THEY'LL STONE YOU WHEN....ETC" LISTNG VARIOUS SITUATION WHEN YOU WILL BE STONED BY PEOPLE IE. HAVE STONES THROWN AT YOU. HIS CONCLUSION IS THAT IT'S LIKELY THAT THIS HAPPEN'S TO EVERYONE, "EVERYBODY MUST GET STONED", EVERYONE MUST GET STONES THROwN AT THEM, NOT JUST ME.

Sorry again, it just irrtates the living daylights out of me having this song quoted at me by dopeheads who can only hear one line in seven.
