Ok, we'ver explored one side of this coin already. Now, it's time to look at the other side. Who, in your opinion are the most overrated bands today. My list is quite large, but here goes: Creed Limp Bizkit N'Sync Nirvana(sorry) Eminem Linkin Park Papa Roach Dave Mathews Band Disturbed This is all I can think of for now. Indie

The Beatles: Sergeant Pepper's is the world's most overrated album. Sure, it has a few pretty little tunes on it, but it isn't the groundbreaker that people seem to think it is. The Beach Boys "Pet Sounds" was a year earlier and with "The Velvet Underground & Nico" and "Piper At The Gates Of Dawn" by Pink Floyd both released the same year, The Beatle's effort can be shown up for what it is: an over produced and clumsily spliced collection of mediocre tunes. John Lennon was a hypocrite, Paul McCartney's songs are just nauseating ("When I'm 64", anyone?) and Ringo Starr thinks he is the great god of drums (Read an interview with the guy! Hilarious!). Only George Harrison comes out of this sorry tale smelling of anything other than manure. He seems like a nice guy and I like his tunes! Oh, and The Who. Just because. Most of the Nu-Metal acts (they're not overrated, just another example of lowest common denominator=most popular) Take a bow Linkin Park et al......

At the moment, Craig David. Uninspiring music, lyrics you could scribble on the back of a fag packet after twelve pints down the pub. Oh, and that bleedin vocoder production makes him sound even more nasal and despicable than usual.

The Rolling Stones I think they're so popular because they survived all the sex, drugs, rock and roll and drugs and did I say drugs?

Go with me on this theory please, Keith Richards is a vampire, or at least a zombie, some sort of un-dead creature. There is no way that man still has a pulse. I'm thinking deal with satan, bitten by Dracula, or something along those lines. I'm telling you, he sleeps in a cave hanging upside down.

I agree about the Stones for the previous generation. For today's music? U2 stands alone in this category.

I agree with following overrated bands: N'Sync, Linkin Park, Papa Roach (they especially, I saw them on a festival and they are really bad), Craig David and Destiny's Child. Also an answer to the sorry of Nirvana IndieQueen posted. According to me Nirvana isn't overrated. Not for their own music, but they have a big influence on a lot of artists and groups after their time. Nirvana has put a lot of new groups on the music map that couldn't break through before they did. Greetings, Tom

Greenstar, I respect your opinion. Lots of people love Nirvana, I don't. I never did. What I hate more is the deification of Kurt Cobain. He simply did not speak to or for me. I understand that many people love him, that's great. I love John Lennon, lots of people don't. It's nice to be able to discuss it civily thought. Mostly I get cussed at for saying I don't like Nirvana.

I know that many will laugh at me with that but honestly do you know when got to know Nirvana? When Cobain died. But it is true that their music affected many other bands. If you want an answer to your question, I'm sorry but there is no much room to write down all of them. Hey, what about N'sync (I think this is their name). Don't you think they have a lot to offer in music? ( YES, it is ironic) I doubt if they can even sing without technical support. (fans, sorry but the truth is always cruel). Even if you thing that they (and I mean other "pop bands" too) have one or two good songs (personally, I do NOT thing so!) they don't deserve their fame or the money they are paid. I mean do you think Spears is paid for her voice? I mean let's be honest for once! Sorry about the spelling. Greetings IndieQueen (you are so right!)

I have to disagree. Destiny's Child is one of the best groups. Maybe they appeal to younger audiences.

I can't stand anything by Nelly Furtado. I didn't like her stuff when I first heard it on the radio, I didn't like it on the radio after hearing it a million times, either. Then I heard her sing in concert and found out that without the help of computers, she can't carry a tune worth beans. Macy Gray is even worse. Rocks crashing down a corrugated metal tube sounds better. *NSync and the Backstreet Boys and most other pop groups I like, because, again, I've heard them in concert; they actually sound quite nice when left to their own devices, unlike a lot of other groups. Certainly they sound better with computers... everyone does! Any group of the rock persuasion whose motto is "louder is better" (NIN and Alien Ant Farm, &c.). I hate having songs shouted at me over the background music (which most of the time would be good if it weren't so damn loud!). Any group that thinks putting in as much profanity and other offensive words/situations is "cool". Eminem and his ilk. Well, rap in general. Anything country and/or western. Ew.

Ooh! I forgot to add specifically Sarah McLaughlan. To mangle a quote from "Friends": "Every time she opens her mouth, I want to rip off my own arm just so I'll have something to throw at her!" Yes, definately Sarah. I despise her music so much, that I'm posting this separately rather than editing my previous post. It's like something is physically preventing me from contaminating the quasi-foulness of the other artists with McLaughlan's ultra-foulness.

The whole pop/rock/rap music industry is overrated to the point of madness in western culture, thus it would be hard to choose just one performer as most overrated. We talk too much about music, movies and television in our culture and not enough about literature, history, science etc.!

Mariah Carey. I just can't see the appeal. Sure, you can admire her vocal gymnastics, but sometimes less is definitely more. I wish the world would cease feeding her ego forthwith.

Hi ya Superfurryanimal- I'm not gonna get into a slagging match just wanna say some of us love Mariah - in a world where mediocre vocalists rule the airwaves its good to hear a singer who takes a song and makes it her own. Its not just vocal gymnastics but writing quality songs with meaning (and believe me you need to hear the albums to hear some of her best tracks). After hearing people like MC sing I'm afraid most other singers just sound like they're lazy and can't really be bothered cos they sing the song so straight. I must put in a good word for Destiny's Child- great songs, strong vocals! Most overrated- I'd have to agree with Macy Gray and Nelly Furtado- how much more irritating can two voices be? And when's someone gonna tell Britney that REAL singers actually have some kind of vocal range? See YA.

I like Mariah Carey as an artist and as a singer. I know what you mean about overkill but what more does anyone want from a popular singer? And she is kind to her fans from what I know! She has a range! Britney had quite a range for a kid when she was on television as a young child. I suppose she's one of the media products who does fairly well. I'm not keen on the mixed sexual messages she gives to teens, kind of "come here come here, get away get away!"

YEAH! A chance to admit that today's pop music is only so much junk. Pick a band/singer...N'Sync, Spears, Destiny's Child, the list goes on and on and on.... Give me the old stuff everytime. Thanks for a forum to share my "unpop" opinion.

Do you know when you meet someone and you just think "I don't like you, but I'm not sure why"? That's me and Mariah. It may not be all that rational, but it is heart-felt! I reckon that it may be an ego thing, the sort of problem that many an international celebrity suffers from, that really rankles. That and the fact that she has a face like a hamster. Oh, and I've never thought that Van Morrison was up to much either.

Coming from a super furry animal, I wonder what you find wrong with hamsters' faces! Just kidding. I understand what you mean about the "I don't know why but it's so." I like Craig David's innovations, nasal though they may be. My children turn me on to the current groups and I can usually tell which ones I like instantly. I have to put Offspring on here. Have I put them on here before? Joni Mitchell used to leave me kind of cold but if I hear some of them now I am happy to hear her still. Macy Gray has an intriguing sound but it looks like a case of the companies finding someone with an intriguing sound and milking it to the max.

All I have to say is Westlife and that's it. Im not going to mention that is's commertial pop nonsense, that contains less emotion, sentiment and meaning that sitting watching paint dry. Im prepared to ignore the fact that if they were less asthetically pleasing (to the majority) then half their female fan base would shun them. Im going to leave it all unsaid and calmly state that I think Westlife are overrated. There not even a band!!!! They don't play instruments!!!! Im not saying they can't Im just saying they don't.
There a group a pop group most usless group of anything that could ever posibly exist. O.k Im done. I promise. Thankyou for Listening [ 12-03-2001: Message edited by: unplugged ]

Whitney Houston..............yeuch! In the same vien as Mariah Carey. What's all that warbling and lip-quivering about? I'm sure you purist's will tell me she has a voice like a 'nightingale singing in Berkley Square'. But to me, it's the vocal equivalent of scraping your fingernail's down a blackboard! That gal out of 'Steps' does it as well, but at least I can watch her with the volume off. I don't even consider boy 'bands' and the like, real. Surely using the name 'band' is a misnomer? wez
