For me - heaven would be Bob Dylan and Joan Baez in a duo performance (But either of them still make a good stage show with just guitar and voice (no need for the Mic.)

Pat Metheny most definitely and I had that honor one night at a concert, just him, his guitar and a mike so you could hear it. He does not sing but the way he plays, he does not need to sing. Beautiful music.

I've seen Joan Baez with her guitar and it was beautiful, she sang Diamonds and Rust and did her Bob Dylan impression! I've seen Leo Kotke who is a brilliant guitarist. Very innovative and "percussive". I saw Segovia too but he doesn't sing. I'm thinking that Joan Armatrading might be one of the most intriguing voices and capable of singing alone with her guitar without backup. I can't think of anyone else off hand. But it would have to be someone who had the purity of voice and the blending with the instrument.

Alison Krauss, if you've ever heard the O, Brother Where Art Thou Soundtrack, she sings "Down to the River to pray". In Blue Grass, you have to be able to really sing, because your voice is not "drowned out" by loud music. She has the most beautiful voice. A lot of bluegrass and gospel singers do, too.

Nick Drake. I love that man's music to a ludicrous extent, but seeing as how he's dead it's highly unlikely that I'll ever see him perform! So I'll go for Bob Mould, ex of Husker Du and Sugar, so long as he performed music from various points in his career. That'd be nice.

We were privileged to see and hear Joan Baez at the House of Blues, in Orlando, about a year and a half ago. Most of the show featured Joan and team, however she did several solos with guitar and she still has a special talent. While living in New Jersey seven to twelve years ago, we were able to see Judy Collins several times at the Count Basie Theater in Red Bank. At that time Judy’s voice was clear and beautiful, both acappella and with her guitar. Last, but not least I would like to say, one of the best musical evenings we have ever had was about fifteen years ago in Winter Park, Florida. We attended a solo performance (fund raiser) by Pete Seeger in a small church. He sat on the alter and sang all his and the Weavers songs, some with his guitar, some without, it was a magical evening. He may not be the greatest singer in the world, but when he sings you really believe he is the best! [ 01-17-2002: Message edited by: Vikan ]

I saw Stan DeWitt at a Dave and Busters in Orange County. He did a song called ‘lonesome picker’ that I’ll never forget. He would be a good choice and I’d also like to hear; Sting Paul Simon Carlos Santana Dwight Yoakam – “give a little bit…give a little bit of your love to me…”

I believe Melissa Etheridge is on the road right now doing this very thing. It's called the "Live and Alone" tour, and I'm pretty sure it's just her and a guitar. I had the pleasure of seeing her in concert in 1994 with her band, and she was awesome, so I'm sure this concert tour would be great as well. Unfortunately, I don't think she's coming to my "neck of the woods" this time.

The adorable and inimitable Mr Neil Hannon, singer and songwriter of the recently defunct The Divine Comedy. If you don't know this wonderful band's music then get ANY of their albums and give yourself a treat. A lot of it is very rich and lush, often with full orchestral accompaniment, but Neil's lovely, gentle bass baritone and exquisite, witty lyrics mean that he's just as much fun on his own with an acoustic guitar. I thank god for him ;-).
