Right, this isn't intended as a long runner or anything, but I was wondering about "death" songs! I mean in particular the rather kitsch songs like "Leader Of The Pack", "Terry", "Johnny Remember Me" and "Seasons In The Sun" (especially "Seasons In The Sun"! I can't be the only person who finds that hilarious?!). What I'm asking for is a few more songs along the same lines, or at least silly songs about popping one's clogs ("Dead & Buried" by Alien Sex Fiend for example, or "Dead" by The Pixies), I want to make up a compilation..... Please believe me, I'm not being morbid, it's just quite a strange topic for songs to cover, especially if they try to do it with a modicum of humour.......

Dead Man's Curve, by Jan and Ian. Typical car go boom story. So are these supposed to be bubblegum type songs? SFA, could have saved this for Halloween! But you want schmaltz, I'm sure we can find it.

Hiya - here in the UK Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer is practically unknown but at the library where I work we have a cuddly reindeer which sings it if you press the paw...naturally he's cute but driving us a little crazy. I'd be interested if anyone had any info on the song seeing as it's new to me..... I know we've already mentioned the Shangri-Las but they are the queens of the death-disc- check their Greatest Hits to see how they made a career of it- how about... I Can Never Go Home Anymore (the Mother's dead) Dressed In Black (the boyfriend's dead) Give Us Your Blessings (boy meets girl, both end up dead) ...You get the idea... personally I love them in a sort of tragi-comic way!! See Ya- Merry Christmas!!!

Carroll County Accident - ? can't remember who sang it, anyone know? What is the one where Joanie is on the answering machine, if it's called "Joanie" I'll be embarrassed, but it goes "hello, this is Joanie, i'm sorry that I'm not home, but if you leave me your name and number i promise as soon as I get in I'll phone".

Last Kiss- I can't remember who did the original, but Pearl Jam covered it. Bella Lugosi's Dead-The Bauhaus (not cheesy though) Try the band The Dead Milkmen, they do some funny stuff. Dead, Jail or Rock N Roll-Michael Monroe (former Hanoi Rocks frontman) Three Stars-Again, don't know who did it, but it's about Buddy Holly, RIchie Valens and the Big Bopper. The Edmund Fitzgerald-Gordon Lightfoot (can't remember if anyone dies though) Oh, and Me First and the Gimmes doing "Seasons in the Sun" truly an amazing cover. I can now listen to that song and not burst into laughter.

I reckon "Without You" by Harry Nilsson counts... "I can't live, if living is without you..oo..oooo!" ...and he died ages ago. Maybe she said no?

SuperFurryAnimal, I was sitting here watching my Christmas tree twinkle, happy as a lark, when I decided to check out the Forums to keep myself from Sneeking into my presents. Well, I got on this thread, didn't I, and now I have Teen Angel running in my head. Thank you Very much! Since I live in a part of the country where Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer naturally hits the air waves every 15 minutes, I was thinking it is a real shame that we cannot have a cultural exchange with all our friends in other countries. We sent them thousands of Grandma and the Reindeer. They could send us something of equal high-class culutral value. Remember, all you Non-Santa believers, "As for me and Grandpa- We Believe!"

Anyone get the Tallahassee Bridge there? I know that personally I always listen to Jim Croce's songs with tenderness as it was part of my schooldays, when one of the friends in the neighborhood hotwired this old Jaguar his dad had collected and took us all to school in it rather than take the stupid schoolbus! Thanks very much for the Laura song, it happens to be one of my favorite names as one of my best friends is named Laura, and I recently found her after 25 years and she's already a grandmother and a computer programmer and it's wonderful knowing she's ok after all these years! I tried to name my daughter Laura but my sister in law got there first...didn't want to have two cousins with the same name! Now it's stuck!

Anyone remember the GRATEFUL DEAD? Death imagery was an important part of their image and a skeleton was their prime logo. Their best-known song was "Truckin'" and they had a hit late in their career with "Shade Of Grey". Their late leader Jerry Garcia was the big bearded guy with the missing middle finger from a childhood accident. tjoeb};>
