bruyere, "cucharacha" or cockroach is just the slang term for marijuana cigarette; in fact, we got the term "roach" for marijuana joint from that word! The song isn't really an amimal song at all, just one about marijuana! tjoeb};>

Yes but do you know the connection between a Mexican leader and the dreaded insect?

I've just checked it out, it's a bit more intricate than the joint story.
The song apparently gave rise to the roach though by association.

How about Lizard, King Crimson?

Bruyere

You asked me about the association between La Cucaracha, marijuana joints and a Mexican president. From what I can see, it’s all rather complicated.

It seems to be generally agreed that the song as we know it dates from the Mexican revolution, though the tune is older. The first verse says something like “The cockroach can’t move because it’s got no marijuana to smoke”. There’s a theory that this is a jibe at Huerta (President 1913 to 1914), who was generally reckoned to be a drunk and a drug user. But others says that “the cockroach” was the big black car of Pancho Villa, or Villa himself. The words I’ve seen don’t seem to hang together particularly well (I don’t know Spanish, so that doesn’t help), and I get the impression that all sorts of satirical words were probably put to the tune by partisans of different sides, though so far as I can see all the references to Huerta seem to be derogatory (“The drunken bandit Huerta is an ox for the plough” etc).

Thanks for confirming my suspicions that this was more complicated than it seemed, you didn't get the story about the jealous woman innkeeper?
But thanks for your help...
Any more animal songs?
