Okay, what's your favorite movie soundtrack or score? I'm talking about music that actually makes the film better and is great to listen to later. I don't care much for soundtracks that merely use the top ten hits in a music genre.

My top five:
1. 'Chocolat'
2. 'Natural Born Killers'
3. 'Jurasic Park'
4. 'Billy Elliot'
5. 'Dancer in the Dark'

What do you think?

My top five:
It's really tough to name just five, but here they are:
1. Star Wars
2. The Thirteenth Warrior
3 Superman
4. A Knight's Tale
5 Shrek

I really love all the John Williams soundtracks from Jaws to Rosewood.

1. the Wall...only part of the movie that was any good to me..

2. natural born killers.. i played that sound track so much on tape, i think i warped it..

3. judgement night...plain kicked butt...

4. agreeing with the John Williams comment...he's amazing with whatever his name is on...

5..this one will sound bizzare...but the soft orchastrations in Free Willy...they are beautiful...

these are just a few that came to mind..

I think one of the greatest soundtracks is American Graffiti. A Knight's Tale is also good because it has a variety of music styles. Chocolat had a very distinctive music that was catchy. How can anyone forget Star Wars? Shrek has a wonderful soundtrack too. (MY QUIZ!)
You're right Lord Andry! Moulin Rouge is a great soundtrack. The music is performed Live, unlike many movies nowdays. LA, did you like the soundtrack for Harry Potter?
I will have to put in the score for The Sting.

A Knight's Tale...so funny and so anachronistic.
only in a movie will you find a medieval period piece matched with modern music. gotta love that ballroom dance to David Bowie's Golden Years.

The Harry Potter soundtrack was blase.
nothing to write home about. John Williams has done much better. besides that was a movie where the music was not the centerpiece, simply just there and stayed outa the way.

Now, Moulin Rouge...amazing work.
the only original song was "Come What May"
and the score was original, but most everything else was a sample.
You just gotta love the "Roxanne" Tango

My absolute favorite of all time is Grease.
The movie Somewhere in Time was dumb, but I love the soundtrack to it.
Oh, and of course, The Little Mermaid.

The Fifth Element
10 Things I Hate About You

I want the O Brother soundtrack. I have New Favorite by Alison Krauss and Union Station. Next best thing, huh?

as i was skating through the replies I was thinking, "oh, the mission would have to be on my list. It's Morricone's best. Lessee, others:

Peter Gabriel's music for Passion
The Sheltering Sky
Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (both Ryuichi Sakamoto)
the Moderns (Mark Isham, et al)
Bulworth (a great Hip-hop soundtrack)
Bullets over Broadway (olde-tyme tunes)
Forever's a long, long time (Orchestra Was)
Liquid Sky (the 1st computer generated soundtrack)
Diva (an absolute fave)
Urgh! a Music War (punk and proto-punk soundtrack)

and the worst? Well, most of Danny Elfman's soundtracks sound similar, but the worst would have to be "Nightbreed," the soundtrack to Clive Barker's movie of the same name. It sounds like a "Meow Mix" commericial from hell and a bad one at that.

and while I don't like Philip Glass (what a charlatan) his soundtrack for "Candyman" was very į propos and not as annoying as, say "Einstein on the Beach."

Gosford Park (Patrick Doyle)
Dead Again (Patrick Doyle)
Amelie (... ?)

Sountrack:
Stigmata
Lost Highway
Not Another Teen Movie
The Last Unicorn (I know, it doesn't quite fit in here...)

I absolutely adore Danny Elfman's musical style, even if I am in the minority with my opinion.

(And I like Danny Elfman's "The Nightmare Before Christmas")

Say Anything
The Crow
10 Things I Hate About You
Highlander
The Last Unicorn (of course)
Bed of Roses
Empire Records
City of Angels

I also like the soundtrack to the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, not just the soundtrack that is out on CD but the whole series in general, they do a very good job of putting the right song in just the right spot.
I also think the soundtrack on Scrubs is well thought out.

Favorite movie soundtracks-

"Singles" (grunge rock)
"Me Myself Irene" (some good Steely Dan covers)
"I Am Sam" (some good Beatles covers)
"Y Tu Mama Tambien" (nice mix of Latin, dance & electronic)
"The Last Waltz" (I guess this counts, a soundtrack to a film of a concert. If so, also have to include "Wattstax" and the original "Woodstock")
"Tommy"
"A Hard Day's Night"
"Help"
"Yellow Submarine"
"Shrek" (love the "Hallejulah" cover)

TV soundtracks-

any and all of the "Xena" soundtracks
"Roswell" (great collection of MOR/alternative hits)
"Dark Shadows" (it's so cheesy it's amazing)
any tv soundtrack or collection performed by the Ventures
(especially "Hawaii 5-0" and "Batman")

I also love scores from Bollywood films (in compilation form).

Also love & collect music from Blaxploitation films as well (the more funky the better).

The soundtrack to Paris,Texas by Ry Cooder. The music is best listened to whilst sipping whisky on the porch on a balmy summers evening.

Unless I'm missing something, no-one has mentioned the two defining moments in soundtracks - 'Rocky Horror' and 'Jesus Christ Superstar'
