okay, let's flip the coin on the bad song lyrics. Tell me some lyrics that have really hit you and made an impact on your thinking or just might be a well thought out song lyric ? I think Dan Fogelberg's Innocent Age Album is a great example of very good writing. The CD is a man's journey from birth to death. some songs are better than others but much of the writing is pretty profound. I first heard it in the seventh grade and did not get all of it. I now understand it a lot more and picked up an extensive vocabulary from it. "Capture the moment, carry the day, stay with the race as long as you may. Follow the dreamer, the fool and the sage back to the days of the innocent age." "In the passage from the cradle to the grave, we are born madly dancing, rushing madly at the chasing of the days, we go on and on without a backwards glance" More later

not to offend any of those of you out there that are religious or anything...but a verse from the song Tomorrow, Wendy, writen by Andy Prieboy made sense to me, and i couldn't get it out of my head... "i told the priest, don't count on any second coming, god got his ass kicked the first time he came down here slumming, he had the balls to come the gall to die and then forgive us, no i don't wonder why i wonder what he thought it would get us"
something about that just stuck...Concrete Blonde recorded it, and with Johnette's voice the way it is, it's amazing... again i appologize if i offended anyone...

Dylan: every word of "Desire" and "Blood on the Tracks", esp "Sara" and "Idiot Wind". This one: Give me your love, and I'll give you the perfect love song With a divine Beatles bass line And a big old Beach Boys sound I'll match you pound for pound Like heavyweights in the final round We'll hold on to each other So we don't fall down Well give me a wink, and I'll give you what I think you're after With just one kiss I will whisk you away to where angels often tread We'll paint this planet red Then stumble back to our hotel bed Where we'll make love to each other Till we're half dead Give me your love and I'll give you the perfect love song Give me your word That you'll be true to me always, come what may Forever and a day No matter what other peole may say We'll hold on to each other Till we're old and grey. Neil Hannon I'll be having this song at my wedding on April 13th ;-)

Sorry to butt in and add my question in a second topic- but I'm desperate - and it does meet the "made you think Lyric theme" Happy are the children who have railways in the hall, Paintings in the kitchen And stories when their small, Friends that come and visit them, Ribbons for their hair ----- PLEASE TELL ME WHAT COMES BETWEEN THAT and Help them build their castles in the air. It's from a song by the Spinners (liverpool Folk Group) in the late 1970's early '80's (It's Track 7 of The Spinners in Concert- so I've found) and it's driving me mad trying to find the complete lyrics.

Lupetta hit the nail right on the head With God on our side the times they are a changing. Perhaps you have to be a Dylan fan to understand that one

Small correction, the song "Me and Bobby McGee" was written by Kriss Kristofferson. Janis Joplin's version is admittedly probably the most famous but it's not her song. Should have mentioned "Times they are a-changing", "THe Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll" is definetely one of Dylan's lyrical high points, what a beautiful, sad, profound song. There's also that lovely one called "The Ship Comes In", Dylan at his most joyous and expectant. I've said it before and I'll say it again, you listen to the man and it ruins you for anyone else. Other people write damn fine lyrics but just really don't come close.

I think Chris Rea's "Tell me there's a Heaven" has some of the most thought provoking lyrics ever, especially given the subject of the song. "Oh every night a baby dies And every night a mama cries What makes those men do what they do To make that person black and blue" "So do I tell her that it's true That there's a place for me and you Where hungry children smile and say We wouldn't have no other way. That every painful crack of bones Is a step along the way Every wrong done is a game plan To that great and joyful day"

It's not one particular song, but Pete Yorn's "Music for the Morning After" as a whole is absolutely wonderful!

quote: WALKING IN SPACE From the Musical HairDoors locked (doors locked) Blinds pulled (blinds pulled) Lights low (lights low) Flames high (flames high) My body (my body) My body My body (my body) My body My body Is walking in space My soul is in orbit With God face to face Floating, flipping Flying, tripping Tripping from Pottsville to Starlight Tripping from Starlight to Moonville On a rocket to The Fourth Dimension Total self awareness The intention My mind is as clear as country air I feel my flesh, all colors mesh Red black Blue brown Yellow crimson Green orange Purple pink Violet white White white White white White white All the clouds are cumuloft Walking in space Oh my God your skin is soft I love your face How dare they try to end this beauty? How dare they try to end this beauty? To keep us under foot They bury us in soot Pretending it's a chore To ship us off to war In this dive We rediscover sensation In this dive We rediscover sensation Walking in space We find the purpose of peace The beauty of life You can no longer hide Our eyes are open Our eyes are open Our eyes are open Our eyes are open Wide wide wide!
...Ok, if you ignore the fact that the song is about taking drugs, it's really quite sweet! (They're playing this at my funeral!

Nesum Dorma - Pavarotti.... ...even though I don't GET all the lyrics, I know enough to know that "none shall sleep" (in the city) til the princess' lover is found....AND....in the final crescendo....oh GAWD.....I can't stand it! Pass the kleenex, Tanzen...I was already crying about lupetta's wedding...then YOU started about funerals! Geez. Oh, by the way, Nesum Dorma and the duet from the Pearl Fishers shall be playing as I pass out of this life! ..and I'm not even an opera fan, much!

Here is a song I really like with a profound message it's called "It's up to you" by Pennywise. I see things happening they fall before my eyes Pretend I'm blind like I could never see the heartache That's not mine and fills my head can I just laugh away The sights that tear my soul and make me sick No I could never be so cold to look away Is it so wrong to want to make a difference? I'd like to think there's no excuse Is it a crime to want things better for yourself? How you want to live is up to you Wish I could be like you indifferent to it all like life's a joke Sarcatic cynical like everything's o.k. But it just won't work In life you have to choose to stay at home and hide Or stand up and fight if caring's my offense Then I proudly stand accused so how about you
