alot of songs have been done and redone many a time...i was curious as to what songs people liked better when remade..i have found that some songs are better as the remake...like 'Cinnamon Girl' by Type O Negative..it's better than the Neil Young version..in my opinion i was listening to Marilyn Manson's 'Tainted Love' yesterday and discovered i like it better than Soft Cell's...but i still like the original as well..and it got me to thinking that it would be an interesting topic for this board... any thoughts?

i actually really dislike remakes, but i will say that i like U2's remake of helter skelter and i am in love with the soundtrack from Moulin Rouge, which, in its own way, is one big remake.

I know this will ruffle the feathers of any of the “boomer” generation out there but I personally liked Aerosmiths version of “Come Together “ better than the Beatles version.

Jellee, look for the original original version of "Tainted Love" by Gloria Jones. It's a frantic soul tune from many years ago, and it's astonishingly good.

Some of you might know I happen to like a certain band The sisters of mercy, a new wave band (some even say: the founders of Gothic rock, allthough they dislike that label) from the eighties, but still going strong... During the years, they've played some brilliant covers - Jolene (Dolly Parton) - Emma (Hot Chocolat) - Teachers (Leonard Cohen) - Confide in me (Kylie Minogue, can you believe that?) - Gimme, gimme, gimme (ABBA) - I wanna be sedated (the Ramones) - Confortably numb (Pink Floyd) - Sugar Baby Love (no clue, but lovely) I like them all, of course. Imagine: you're standing in a venue, there's a lot of smoke, a lot of blacklights, a lot of people in black clothes, a lot of ... and then you recognize the music from Sugar baby love... and then a guy in a very deep voice starts singing it... Damn, that was fun

Don't forget "1969", Wim, that was a Stooges cover. A damn fine one too. And "Gimme Shelter" too. Oh! Didn't they also do "Ghostrider" (Suicide) and "Stairway To Heaven"? Good God, this would make a great compilation!!

You're right... Don't forget Knockin' on Heavens door... maybe I can make a compilation of this, I almost have them all on CD (except the recent ones from the tour from 2001, but I'm still looking for bootlegs of that)...

And wait! There's more! Louie Louie (The Kingsmen) Sister Ray (The Velvet Underground) But only "Gimme Shelter", "Emma" and "1969" have been recorded I think....

Got them on live boolegs... Jolene was recorded on a John Peel session (i've got a very expensive sinle of it, and it appeared on various bootlegs after that). Sister Ray and Louie Louie I've got as live versions... HEy, I just might compose my own bootleg of al the cover versions (and yes, I've got your address)

In my humble opinion, Metallica did a better job with "Turn The Page" than Bob Seger did. I am also fond of GNR's "Knockin' On Heaven's Door".

I believe the band was The Rubettes (I only know of this, coz my big sister was in love with the lead singer)......... No..........hang on, they also did 'Juke-Box Jive' ie......'Come on baby do the Juke-Box jive, just like we did in 1965' .......always wore those funny little white hats as well! wez (So 'The Sisters' are mainly a 'covers' band eh?) You'd never get The Stranglers doin' covers!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey SFA, I was wandering through my collection, and I found some more covers: - Always look on the bright side of life (tadam) - the monty Python gang (played on the reading festival, years ago) - Stop dragging my heart around - Stevie Nicks?? (somewhat a capela, but very intense) I keep on looking, bbut I think I've got enough to fill a complete cd. But I need to get a grip first on the latest bootlegs, will be continued... quote: (So 'The Sisters' are mainly a 'covers' band eh?)
Not really, but they had the tendencie to play some covers live, to show the world (well...) that some songs could have been better Who could ever predict that it would be hip to cover ABBA in the early 80's?

War wizard, I agree with you about Aerosmith, that was a good choice to cover andthey did it very well. I know from reading past posts that I'll get some stick for this but I really liked Alien Ant Farm's cover of "Smooth Criminal" and had much fun spotting all the Michael Jackson references in the video ;-). Fave cover versions are Elvis Costello's cover of Robert Wyatt's "Shipbuilding" and The Divine Comedy's cover of my favourite Smiths song: "There is a light that never goes out".

One that comes to mind is "Can't Help Falling In Love" by Lick The Tins. I heard it on the Some Kind Of Wonderful soundtrack - it's delicious. I agree with those who mentioned Me First and the Gimmee Gimmees. Not only are they the best cover band, they have the coolest band name ever. I am convinced that every country song would sound great covered by a punk band, and every punk song would sound great covered by a country band. I've thought for some time that Animotion's 80's hit "Obsession" should be covered by Nine Inch Nails.

Eleanor Rigby - Ray Charles (it has a bit more soul, what can I say?) Blue Monday - Orgy (proves that a cover can go in a completely different direction & still sound good. Must admit, I still love the original) All Tomorrow's Parties - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds (everything this man touches turns to gold)

A great cover is Voodoo Chile by Stevie Ray Vaughn of Jimmy Hendrix's original. Simply awesome! I agree Jellee, TON's cover of Cinnamon Girl is great. Van Halen's cover of You Really Got Me by the Kinks is also heads above the original. Metallica's cover of Breadfan and Stone Cold Crazy both rock too. Neat thread, Jellee. Boosch

thanks Booch...i was curious to hear what other people had to say.. and i was reading today that Steve Earle is covering Nirvana's Breed...thought i might actually like that since i wasn't a big Nirvana fan..some people's music i like way better than the original... as for TON...i think they could cover anything and make it sound better...

Best one I can think of is Wheatus' cover of A Little Respect originally done by Yazoo. Heard a great one today on the radio though, although I suspect it was a one off done for the show, it was Elbow doing a cover of Destinys Childs Independant Woman(women?), slightly tongue in cheek I suspect!!!
