Some semblance of sanity on Day 3 .. no upsets on Day 3. All the winners were the seeds which should've won .. srini701 picked 7/8 (he missed the Marquette game) and moved up into 3rd place.
Apart from the top two and the bottom two, no-one retained their spot from yesterday. None of the top three have won this comp before, so we still may see our 11th winner in 11 years .. 4th and 5th are prior winners (Howie72 won this in 2002 and illiniman14 won it in 2010).
Yesterday 6 of 15 had four live picks for the Final Four .. today we're down to just four players with four live picks! One bloke has just the one, and another has just two live.
There are 23 games left in this Madness, and no-one has 23 live picks. Best is Howie72 and jonnowales with 20 live, and lowest is ozzz2002 with 11 live and gtho4 with 14 live. It won't be long before their mpt is less than the leader's and these two blokes are officially/mathematically out of the running. |

Day 4 saw two games picked by no-one and best picks of just 4/8. George95 replaces theomarch at the top of the pile .. he was one of three to pick #11 NC State to beat #3 Georgetown. This result saw one player lose his winner and two players lose a Final Four pick .. 8 of 15 still have a complete set of live picks for the finalists x2 and the winner; and Geroge95 is one of them.
Yesterday 4 of 15 had four live picks for the Final Four. Today we're down TO none! No-one has a complete set of picks for the Final Four.
There are 15 games left in this Madness, and no-one has 15 live picks. Three players have 13 live ones .. srini701 and Howie72, who are running 3rd and 4th, plus LoeDaVinci, who's bringing up the rear.
ozzz2002 retires to the gallery to watch the remainder of the comp .. he cannot catch George95 even if every one of his remaining live picks x6 are correct (his mpt is less than the 195 pts accumulated by George95). These four players have an mpt < 10 pts more than George95' current pts: toocool4u, dg_dave and LeoDaVinci. They're next!

I ran the remaining possibilities of the tournament through Microsoft Excel. Assuming I didn't make a typo entering things:
-Only 6 people actually have a shot of winning at this point (though some of us still might make the podium): George95, themonarch, srini701, Howie72, illiniman14, and jonnowales. Most of the rest of us have enough picks overlapping with George95 that we can't catch him even if everything goes our way. N-bomb can catch George95, but he matches all of his remaining picks but one with srini701.
-Jonnowales has the narrowest road left to follow...Kentucky and Louisville must win next round for him to stand a chance. Illiniman14 needs an Ohio St. win over Cincinnati, but everybody else can afford to have one game go poorly (of course, when does only one game go poorly...)
-There's still a chance we could finish with 4 people tied at the top.
-If every game was 50/50 and everybody's tiebreakers were equally likely to win, the odds at the moment would be

Day 8 saw the Final Four decided .. four of us picked the card, two of us zilch, and the rest picked one right. There are 8 different combinations of results for the remaining three matches.
The well has run dry for themonarch, plus two others .. they're running dead with no live picks left. Nonetheless, themonarch can stay on the podium if Louisville play in the final (silver if Louisville win, bronze if Louisville lose). He will stay on the podium with bronze if Kentucky play Ohio State in the final (it doesn't matter who wins); and he's off the podium if the final is Kansas v Kentucky.
Bxbarracuda will jump up onto the podium for silver if Kentucky play in the final and win (it doesn't matter who they play). If Kentucky lose - it's bronze if they lose to Kansas, and he's off the podium if Kentucky lose to Ohio State.
illiniman14 can also jump up onto the podium .. he collects the silver medal if Ohio State win (irrespective of who they play), and bronze if Ohio State lose to Louisvile.
Howie72 will retain 3rd spot and stay on the podium for bronze if Kansas play Kentucky, or Kansas play Louisville .. but if Kansas beat Kentucky he'll tie with George95 and we have a dead-heat for gold .. the cbs countback will then be used as the tie-breaker. If there is a tie and he wins the tie-breaker, he will become the first to win this twice (this year's comp is the 11th edition). Howie72 won this five years ago, back in 2007.
The table below sets out all the 8 permutations remaining. If I've done this right George95 will win this (dead-heat in one scenario), no matter who plays who in the final, with silver and bronze going to two of the above four players. There is one chance in eight of the dead-heat, and then it's a 50/50 chance with the tie-breaker. If Kansas and Kentucky qualify to play in the final, we won't know the winner until the fat lady has finished.
The Final Four play-off on Saturday, and the final will be played on Monday night. We're almost there; the Madness is nearly over. |

They won't. If it is tied after 40 minutes, then they play 5 more. It stays tied, they do it again until a winner is decided.

What? this is only a 40 minute game? It's not school kids playing, is it? (I know you have college basketball in USA, so is this march madness a similar comp for school children?)

What? this is only a 40 minute game? Yes. It is only two 20 minute halves. It is actually only 8 minutes shorter than the professional leagues (NBA) who play 4 12 minute quarters (48 min) It's not school kids playing, is it? (I know you have college basketball in USA, so is this march madness a similar comp for school children? This is collge basketball. However, most of the players recieved athletic scholarships to go their respective schools, and are probably going into the NBA, even before their four years at school are up. They do attend classes and gain an education, but it might not come in handy until they retire at 40. There is no March Madness for kids below the university level. Dave can correct me on this, but each state has an individual competition for high schools, and anything below is just a battle with the local schools, I assume.

Thanks, George for that info! never wondered, nor did it strike me to ever google for info We have competitions for school/college children below university level in various sports here in India, but the times are never altered (that said, I have NO clue about any basketball anywhere in the world anyway )
