The way it works, for each level, is as follows:

High schools: Four 8 minute quarters (no shot clock either)
Collegiate: Two 20 minute halves (35 second shot clock - dropped from 45)
Professional: Four 12 minute quarters (24 second shot clock).

As for playoffs, each state does indeed have their own playoff system. Each class (1A, 2A, etc.) has 32 districts (in Texas - other states may vary), and each district has three or four teams that make the playoffs. The largest school(s) play in Division I, and the smaller schools in Division II. Most high school games are played in the evenings, around 7pm local time.

That's true for the top players, but most of the players in the tournament won't make it that far. There's only 30 teams in the NBA, and they only draft 60 players each year (including international players).

mk = maximum number correct picks, if all remaining are correct.
mpt= maximum points if all remaining picks are correct.

Day 8 saw the Final Four play the national semi-fianls, deciding the last two for the final on Monday night. Three of us picked the card, five of us scored zilch, and the rest picked one right.

The winner of the tipping comp will be decided on Monday night, which is unusual. The usual situation is no-one has a live pick and the winner is decided before the final is played .. one year the winner was decided at the Elite Eight stage as no-one was left with a live pick for the Final Four, let alone the final. Seven of us have a live pick for the winner .. that's almost half the field (x2 Kansas, x5 Kentucky).

This year's MM tipping comp will be a simple turkey shoot between George95 and Howie72 .. see table below.

If Kentucky win George95 will win gold. If Kansas beat Kentucky we have a dead-heat and the cbs countback will then be used as the tie-breaker. We have never had the gold medal in an MM tipping comp decided on a countback. However, we have had a countback for one of the podium positions .. LeoDaVinci remembers these details.

Four of the non-podium positions may also require the tie-breaker and, if Kansas win, LeoDaVinci will move off the bottom rung for the first & only time.

Kansas v Kentucky
Kansas win

237 George95
237 Howie72
222 BxBarracuda
220 themonarch

Kentucky win

237 George95
232 BxBarracuda
226 Howie72
220 themonarch

It's all over, George95 wins the MM tipping comp! He may have run out of live picks, but he led form start to finish to grab gold. BxBarracuda moves up to 2nd place, for the first and only time, to grab silver .. and Howie72 collects the bronze medal.

1.   George95
2.   BxBarracuda
3.   Howie72

This brings to an end the 11th edition of Madness here at FT, and our 11th different winner. This equals the FT record .. the NFL comp ran for 11 years and saw 11 different winners, before a repeat winner emerged.

We nearly had a repeat winner this year ... however, even if Kansas had had scored another 9 pts and won the final, Howie72 would've lost the gold medal on a countback .. he needed both teams to score another 10 pts between them (he had 150pts for the final vs 139 pts for George95).

One day someone will win this twice; it can't go on forever .. and then we'll wait for someone to retain their title. Thank you linesmen and women, thank you ballboys and girls .. and congratulations to the three medallists!

Yay! smile 11 different winners? That's me done I guess.

Thanks to George for the write-ups, as well as Howie for such a good fight to the finish and Bx who stealthy ended up in second.
