The European soccer championships begin next month on Friday 8th June (hosted jointly by Poland and Ukraine). The final will be played in Kiev, Ukraine on Sunday 1st July) .. 16 teams that have qualified for the Euro 2012 finals tournament (Spain beat Germany 1-0 to win Euro 2008 and Greece beat Portugal 1-0 to win Euro 2004): 14th European ChampionshipGroup A Poland Greece Russia Czech Rep. | Group B Netherlands Denmark Germany Portugal | Group C Spain Italy Ireland Croatia | Group D Ukraine Sweden France England |
The tipping comp will have 9 rounds, 4 games each round (except for the semis and final), with 8 pts up for grabs reach round, i.e. there are 8 picks for 4 games .. for each game we will also pick the score! It's one point for picking the result and one point for picking the score (each is an independent pick e.g. you can pick Spain to win but pick 1-1 as the score). Advance picks will plug the holes in ethe semis and final to get to the 8 pts, same as UEFA Champions League. Bonus pts will also be awarded, same as the UEFA and FLC tipping comps, with the added spice of a bonus point for perfect picks: - perfect picks 8/8.
- perfect picks solo, another bonus pt (tipster will also receive a Knighthhood).
- pick result solo or one of two (or three if 20 or more runners).
- pick score solo or one of two (or three if 20 or more runners).
- no one picks win, whoever picks a draw, e.g. 9-3-0 the three picked a draw.
- no one picks draw, whoever picked the upset, e.g. 10-0-2 (won't apply if even split, e.g. 6-0-6).
- no one picks score, whoever is closest +/- one goal for the winner (plus before minus) then +/- one goal for the loser (plus before minus). See post below this one for examples.
If there's a dead-heat at the end of this comp with this scoring system, I'll be a monkey's uncle. If we do, the usual HoF vs. WS countback will apply. As the winner of the Euro 2008 tipping comp, srini701 is the defending title holder. The podiums at previous comps looked like this: Gold Silver Bronze Euro 2004 : wez ace_sodium gtho4 Euro 2008 : srini701 jill-geo Sypher
Anyone interested in Euro 2012? If so, please sign in! Every game is at 90 minutes full time .. extra time and penalty shoot-out lotteries are ignored. Bonus point were no-one picks the score: no one picked 4-1 scoreline: one player picked 5-1 and two players had 3-1 .. the player who picked 5-1 collects the bonus point (if no one picked 5-1, then it's whoever picked 3-1). If no one picked either 5-1 or 3-1, whoever picked 4-2 (and then 4-0 if no-one picked 4-2). No bonus point awarded if no-one picked 5-1, 3-1, 4-2 or 4-0. Other examples where no-one picks the score: 4-2 : bonus pt for 5-2, then 3-2, then 4-3, then 4-1, then nothing. 4-3 : 5-3 then 4-2 then nothing. 4-0 : bonus for 5-0, then 3-0, then 4-1, then nothing. 3-1 : bonus for 4-1, then 2-1, then 3-2, then 3-0, then nothing. 3-2 : 4-2 then 3-1 then nothing. 2-1 : 3-1 then 2-0 then nothing. 1-0 : bonus pt for 2-0 only. 0-0 : bonus pt for 1-1 only. 1-1 : 2-2 then 0-0, then nothing. 2-2 : 3-3 then 1-1, then nothing. 3-3 : 4-4 then 2-2 then nothing. and so on for any other scores, lol List of tipping threads:

If there's a dead-heat at the end of this comp with this scoring system, I'll be a monkey's uncle You better find one. These comps always seem to be close at the wire! I'll take a shot at it.

14th European ChampionshipGroup A Poland Greece Russia Czech Rep. | Group B Netherlands Denmark Germany Portugal | Group C Spain Italy Ireland Croatia | Group D Ukraine Sweden France England |
Euro 2012 preview in one of Sydney's newspapers:Poland * FIFA ranking: 65 * Key man: Wojciech Szczesny * Strength: Home fans * Weakness: Lack of goals * Tip: Last in group
WHEN your key man is the goalkeeper, it says it all about your style of play. Poland are fit, tough and stoic. They will park the bus in front of goal, rely on the passion from playing at home and then try to nick a goal on the counter. Midfielder Robert Lewandowski, from Borussi Dortmund, offers the X-factor to a squad built around tight defence. | Netherlands * FIFA ranking: 4 * Key man: Robin van Persie * Strength: Match-winners * Weakness: Never seem happy * Tip: Semi-finals
THERE are few more attractive teams in the world, it just would be nice if they enjoyed it more. In Robin van Persie, Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder, the Dutch are brilliant going forward. This is a tough group, so they will need to be at their best. Unheralded defenders Gregory van der Wiel and Jorith Mathijsen have massive roles to play. | Spain * FIFA ranking: 1 * Key man: Xavi * Strength: Everywhere * Weakness: Villa's injury * Tip: Champions
THE 2008 champions, 2010 World Cup winners and hot favourite to defend their title. Quality, class and chasing history . . . make no mistake, this is a footballing juggernaut. Xavi is the master puppeteer, Iker Casillas is a great keeper, defensively they are sound and Andres Iniesta is a match-winner. A Spain-Germany final: it would be a classic. | Ukraine * FIFA ranking: 49 * Key man: Andriy Yarmolenko * Strength: Playing at home * Weakness: Leaky at the back * Tip: Will beat Sweden
IMPORTANT things first: Ukraine sells the cheapest beer in Europe. Second point: It will be extra sweet when the hosts beat Sweden in their opening game. Andriy Yarmolenko, 22, already has big European clubs calling so he will be looking to shine. He will partner 35-year-old Andriy Shevchenko, who will be looking to go out with a bang. | Greece * FIFA ranking: 14 * Key man: Giannis Fetfatzidis * Strength: Defence * Weakness: Lack of goals * Tip: Quarter-finals
A NATION in desperate need of some good news will be hoping for a similar miracle to 2004 when the Greeks were kings of Europe. They should advance to the next stage because they are hard to break down, conceding just five goals in 10 qualifying matches. Keep an eye out for the Greek Messi (yes, another one). Giannis Fetfatzidis is a quality player. | Denmark * FIFA ranking: 9 * Key man: Christian Eriksen * Strength: Structured * Weakness: This group * Tip: Pack light
THE Danes were called off the beach to win in 1992, replacing Yugoslavia in the main draw. Advancing here would be a similar fairytale. This is a good team, with Christian Eriksen and Nicklas Bendtner fine players. They will be organised and defensive and try to pinch a goal – I just can't see it being enough against Germany or The Netherlands. | Italy * FIFA ranking: 12 * Key man: Antonio Cassano * Strength: Pedigree * Weakness: Temperament * Tip: Second in group
NEVER underestimate Italy. They can be quirky (Mario Balotelli); there can be drama (another scandal involving match-fixing at home); and they face Spain first-up. But the Italians are always dangerous because football is their passion. Players such as Andrea Pirlo have been around the block a few times and will be ready to aim up. | Sweden * FIFA ranking: 17 * Key man: Zlatan Ibrahimovic * Strength: Experience * Weakness: Lack of depth * Tip: Fourth in group
SWEDEN always punch above their weight, but this looks a fight too far for a team that has had better days. AC Milan's Zlatan Ibrahimovic remains their best player, scoring five goals in eight qualifying matches. They have a history of tight matches against England and will be looking to defend their way through by minimising the damage against France. | Russia * FIFA ranking: 11 * Key man: Andrei Arshavin * Strength: Creativity * Weakness: Up front * Tip: Top of the group
DICK Advocaat is a dour manager in charge of a small, quick team that like to express themselves. He is also the eighth highest paid coach in the world. A lot is expected of Advocaat and his relationship with his players will be crucial to success. Arshavin will look to create chances for Roman Pavlyuchenko and Aleksandr Kerzhakov, but lack of goals has been a concern. | Germany * FIFA ranking: 2 * Key man: Mesut Ozil * Strength: Going forward * Weakness: Defence * Tip: Finalists
GERMAN football has had a personality transplant. Once metronomes of the world game, this is a team lethal in attack. Mesut Ozil, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Lukas Podolski are all brilliant. And Beatnik coach Joachim Loew allows his stars to express themselves. Defence – isn't that what you sit on? | Ireland * FIFA ranking: 18 * Key man: Robbie Keane * Strength: Irish spirit * Weakness: No playmaker * Tip: A brave exit
THIS will be a fitting swansong from international football for a generation of Irish players. Robbie Keane, Shay Given, Damien Duff, John O'Shea and Richard Dunne have all been great servants for their country, who always fight tooth and nail to reach tournaments like this. Advancing from the group will be a challenge too far. | France * FIFA ranking: 16 * Key man: Franck Ribery * Strength: Pace * Weakness: Lack of a leader * Tip: Semi-final
LOOK for France at the next World Cup in two years because this is a team on the rise. Real Madrid's Karim Benzema is all class up front, Samir Nasri is just getting better and Yann M'Vila is exciting – and they are all young. After the embarrassment of South Africa 2010, this event will restore French pride. The only thing missing is a Zidane-style leader. | Czech Republic * FIFA ranking: 26 * Key man: Tomas Rosicky * Strength: Experience * Weakness: No genuine striker * Tip: Third in group
THE good news for the Czechs is they have a terrific under-21s team – the bad news is they are not ready for this tournament. Coach Michal Bilek will rely on the same old faces of keeper Petr Cech, midfielder Tomas Rosicky and Petr Jiracek. Their leading scorer in qualifying was left back Michal Kadlec, which tells a story in itself. | Portugal * FIFA ranking: 5 * Key man: Cristiano Ronaldo * Strength: Ronaldo * Weakness: Ronaldo * Tip: He won't be enough
WE are not trying to say Portugal are a one-man band . . . oh, yes we are. Their one hope is that Ronaldo takes this tournament by the throat and carries his country the way he does at club level. Manchester United's Nani is a fair player, too, but this is a quality group that shows winning Euro can be tougher than winning a World Cup. | Croatia * FIFA ranking: 8 * Key man: Luka Modric * Strength: Creativity * Weakness: Strikers * Tip: Third in group
THERE is an Australian influence with defender Josip Simunic. Led by Spurs spearhead Luka Modric, Croatia have a scheming midfield capable of upsetting Italy and sneaking into the next phase. Coach Slaven Bilic is renowned for building a team tight in spirit and strong in resolve, although there are worries in defence and up front. | England * FIFA ranking: 7 * Key man: Roy Hodgson * Strength: No expectations * Weakness: Rooney's ban * Tip: Quarter-final
BOY, can England find some troubles. Their best player will miss the first two games against France and Sweden, the manager Roy Hodgson is untested and the tabloids will be sharpening their headlines. For all that, I'm expecting England to finally deliver in a big tournament. Maybe, it's out of loyalty; I can just feel something. | Sunday Telegraph 3rd June 2012

| | | The 2012 edition of the Euro tipping comp saw 18 runners line-up at the starting gates, a new record for a Euro tipping comp at FT (there were 13 runners for the 2008 edition and 17 runners back in 2004).
We have 8 survivors from the 2008 comp who are back for another dose: Howie72, KrivoyRog, LeoDaVinci, paper_aero, srini701, gtho4, ozzz2002 and Sypher. The last three tipsters are the only survivors from the first edition back in 2004. The defending title holder is srini701.
We have, however, roped in ten newbies for Euro 2012. Welcome aboard!
illiniman14 was best to begin. He jumped out of the starting gates firing on all cylinders to collect the first weekly win with picks of 5/8 .. wwe84 picked 4/8 but also swooped up a bonus point; he was the only tipster to pick the upset win by Denmark. These two tipsters are in a dead-heat for first. Will these two sprinters last the distance?
Five players collected a wooden spoon each with 1/8 .. all of them picked Germany to win except for BxBarracuda who did it the hard way; his sole pick was the draw in the opening game. There's a long way to go before we find the winner of this comp .. there are 9 rounds with 8 points up for grabs each round.
Spain are the defending titleholder at Euro 2012 and the reigning world champions. They're the third country to hold both titles:- Euro 1972, World Cup 1974 - West Germany
- Euro 2000, World Cup 1998 - France
Should Spain retain their Euro title, they will become the first to achive this feat since the competition started back in 1960 and, of course, the first to do so whilst they're reigning world champions.
Round Two starts tonight in about 16 hrs : Euro 2012 ( 2 ) Sun 10th June

Howie72 moves into 2nd place and N-Bomb retains 3rd courtesy of yet another bonus point.. he's the only player who retained their spot from Round One. Dizart and KrivoyRog join N-Bomb to make it a three-way tie for 3rd place.
kevinatilusa and Sypher collected back-to-back wooden spoons.
After just two rounds we have just 4 of 18 players who cannot be separated by a countback: LeoDavinci and gtho4, plus szabs and George95.
Every country has now played their opening match of the group stage. Round Three starts tonight in about 17 hours or so (we also lodge our first advance picks for the tournament; the four semi-finalists) : Euro 2012 ( 3 ) Tue 12th June.

| | | Unlike the previous rounds, we have six winners (previously one) and just one wooden spoon (previously multiples).
Once again we have a new leader .. Dizart has now taken over front-running duties and, ominously, the top four have started to open up a gap between themselves and the rest of us.
The game of musical chairs continues .. Howie72 and illiniman14 were the only players who retained their position from the previous round.
Sypher has his first weekly win, to add to his collection of back-to-back wooden spoons. After three rounds he has three awards .. will Round 4 see a fourth?
After 3 of 9 rounds we still have just 4 of 18 players who can't be separated by a countback: AlonsoKing and Howie72, plus George95 and KrivoyRog. Let's see of this can continue to the finish post; and there are no dead-heats for a podium spot.
Round 4 starts tonight in about 17 hrs: Euro 2012 ( 4 ) Thu 14th June.
