It's almost time for the second leg of the FT tennis comps, with the beginning of the French Open at Roland Garros. Will gtho4 and triviapaul defend their men's and women's titles, respectively (no, triviapaul, I'm not calling you a woman, but you won last year's women's comp), or will we see a new face atop the podium?
Come one, come all, and tip your way through the French!
Tips must be in by commencement of the second round.
Scoring will be the same as the one used for Wimbledon, the US Open, and the Australian Open:
5 pts x 1 : picking the winner. 3 pts x 2 : picking a semi-final winner (picking a finalist). 2 pts x 4 : picking a quarter-final winner (picking a semi-finalist). 1 pts x 8 : picking a quarter-finalist.
Additionally, sign up and you will get bonus points for the seeding of your correct picks.

I am going to impress in the first few rounds, but, I swear, I haven't got it in me, still.

While George95's prediction was correct, it's a bit shocking that there are no American men in the third round of the French Open for the first time in five years. While Andy Murray struggled with back pain and advanced, Roger Federer struggled with unforced errors and advanced as well. On the other hand, top two seeds Djokovic and Nadal made mincemeat out of their opponents and breezed through barely breaking a sweat. John Isner had another match go on forever and ever (remember his match against Mahut in Wimbledon that lasted three days?) this time losing out to Mathieu 18-16 in the final set. It's to be noted that Isner had no match points against Mathieu while the Frenchman had seven.
In the other half, there are no Williams sisters left in the tournament after Venus fell to third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska in straight sets. Radwanska proceeded to 'build' upon her success and LOST to Svetlana Kuznetsova in the third round. On the other hand, top two seeds Sharapova and Azarenka seem to be doing just fine as they proceeded to win their first two matches each.

And only myself and illiniman have our winners on the women's side alive, thanks to Azarenka, Na, and Serena losing out.

Shows the differences between the two genders - men's tennis is becoming a bit too predictable, while women's tennis is really just a crapshoot, anything can happen - which is a bit too unpredictable

The mens top 4 has been boring the last year, but this year might prove different Del Potro has taken the first two sets from Federer and Tsonga is tied 1 - 1 and up 6-5 on Djokovic right now.

Federer being Federer, when you're down by two sets against a guy you've already lost to before, what do you do? Hit the reset button and start as though nothing had occurred. You then take the next three sets dropping only five games along the way. Simple enough. (Then you face Djokovic in the semifinals and burn out...)
Djokovic was also on the ropes, Tsonga had four match points against him, and Djokovic still managed to get the win. How's that for #1 caliber tennis?
Sara Errani is already a champion at this French Open, wining the women's doubles along with Roberta Vinci.

- Maria Sharapova regains the #1 ranking on the WTA by winning here at the French Open.
- Congratulations to BxBarracuda, who wins the 2012 Women's French Open tipping competition!
- He won with 47 points in a very low-scoring field. That's only about a 26.9% strike rate. His solo pick of Kaia Kanepi got him big points for the win.
{*} Second place went to illiniman4 with only 37 points, and third place went to George95. - Fourth, fifth and sixth places were decided on a tiebreaker, as were eighth and ninth.
- In the cellar we have wwe84 whose three points were barely enough to save him from a very difficult-to-obtain Golden Wood.
[*} We had unseeded Yaroslava Shvedova go unpicked, as were Dominika Cibulkova and Sara Errani, the runner-up. This just goes to show how narrow the women's field actually is. - Once again, this was a record-tying French Open with thirteen people tipping. The all-time record is 14, at Wimbledon.
- Men's results to follow soon!

Well done to Barracuda, illiniman and George...this was a very unpredictable year at Roland Garros, so kudos to Barracuda for picking Kanepi!
