US Open Championship
PGA Golf
June 14-17, 2012

The Rules
1. Everyone will pick 5 golfers.

2. We may have a maximum of 2 golfers from the top 10 of world rankings as of June 3, 2012 in our fivesome. The current top 10 is:

1. Luke Donald (ENG)
2. Rory McIlroy (NLR)
3. Lee Westwood (ENG)
4. Tiger Woods (USA)
5. Bubba Watson (USA)
6. Matt Kuchar (USA)
7. Justin Rose (ENG)
8. Hunter Mahan (USA)
9. Jason Dufner (USA)
10. Martin Kaymer (DEU)

Retrieved from http://www.officialworldgolfranking.com/rankings/default.sps

3. The lowest 4 scores from each tippers fivesome will be added together to make the final score, and the lowest total score wins.

4. If one of your golfers fails to make the cut, his score from the first two rounds will be doubled to account for his final two rounds.

Tiebreaker
The lowest score from each tippers fifth golfer will serve as the tiebreaker. Should that be the same, it will go to the fourth-highest score and so on. Picking the same 5 golfers as another participant will result in an absolute tie.

Sign in with your teams below, and good luck!

The final list of participants can be found at:
http://www.usopen.com/en_US/players/index.html

Deadline: midnight Wednesday FT time
there's a period of grace of a couple of hours

How do you spell second day Meltdown G-A-R-R-I-G-U-S.

My ace in the hole turned out to be a deuce when he bogeyed 5 holes in a row and 7 of 8 to barely miss the cut. With Bubba Watson also missing the cut by 1, I think that puts me off the podium, no matter how my other 3 finish. Though my three left aren't doing too shabby.

Shaping up to be a good Sunday and Tiger's in the mix, will he be wearing Red?

*- paper_aero and Sypher once again picked the exact same 5 golfers, and the tie could not be broken

+- gtho4 won the tiebreaker over PaulE 300-302 (Rory McIlroy v Luke Donald)

  • Our own finals, like that of the real tournament, came down to the wire. George95 would have had a comfy lead if not for Jim Furyk throwing away his own lead in the final 3 holes of the tournament. Despite that 2-shot swing, George came out on top, unlike Furyk. The other podium finishers, ozzz2002 and gillyharold, also saw one of their main golfers fall in the third round, as Tiger Woods collapsed early on in the day.

  • James Simpson caught it easy on Father's Day, since his dad Webb earned himself a shiny new trophy by birdieing 4 out of 5 holes from 6-10, and then parring every hole on the way in to finish at +1. Just a few minutes after he finished, Jim Furyk bogeyed the 16th, putting him behind for good.

  • With every golfer in the world available, Lee Westwood, who has never won a major championship, was the most popular pick. He seemed to be in contention throughout most of Sunday, but by the 14th hole he sat at +6. An eagle on #17 helped temporarily, but he finished his round with a bogey on #18.

  • The Olympic Club pulled out all the stops to trip up the field, and the winner finished over par for the first time since 2007. Only 7 players finished under par for the day on Sunday - Simpson was -2 and Michael Thompson was -3, finishing 1 stroke back from Simpson. Jim Furyk seemed to have the tournament in his hands until the tee of the 16th, when he hooked his drive into the trees in Mickelson-like fashion, and finished the hole with a bogey to move to +2 as Simpson parred the 18th to finish at +1 overall.

  • Tiger Woods was the news of the first two rounds of the tournament, going into the weekend tied for the lead at -1. On Saturday, he bogeyed 4 of the first 8 holes and finished at +5 for the day, but still in contention. That did not last on Sunday, as he went +6 in the first 6 holes and immediately took himself out of the running.

  • If you decided to pick the #1, 2, 5, or 10 golfer in the world, you picked someone who missed the cut. In fact, the only two tippers who didn't pick someone who failed to make the cut were George and ozzz - who finished first and second. Twice as many tippers had to use the score of a golfer who didn't make the cut as compared to the Masters of this year.

  • And the British Open will roll around on July 19 at Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club, we hope to see all of you (and many more) then!

A podium finish for moi? Geez, I am not used to that happening. I would like to thank the Academy, my parents, my cats, Spike Milligan and illiniman, in no particular order. smile

Congrats and very well done to the podium! Especially happy for Ozzz and his acceptance speech smile

Didn't know PaulE and George95 were the one and same smile...he appears in both 1st and 8th positions!

I am also very happy for myself...have moved up from the last position...one day I shall get the hang of this sport...thanks, illiniman for introducing a nice comp and for the prompt write-ups!

    WTG George, ozzz and gilly.

    Nice work illiniman.

They were joking that Westwood's ball that didn't drop might only be one of over 100 up in that one cypress tree.
