1. ozzz2002 2. wwe84 3. PaulE
*- Dizart wins tiebreaker over srini701 286-294 (Lee Westwood v. Darren Clarke)
#- paper_aero wins tiebreaker by default as George95’s fifth golfer (Webb Simpson) withdrew from the tournament
+- The top 3 tippers picked Justin Rose as fifth golfer, Howie72 wins tiebreaker with a 285 (Francesco Molinari); szabs is second with a 286 (Lee Westwood); and gillyharold is third with a 288 (Sergio Garcia) using the fourth golfer from each. Illiniman14's fifth golfer Phil Mickelson shot 302 to Rose's 288.
**- BxBarracuda wins tiebreaker over LeoDaVinci 291-302 (Chad Campbell v. Phil Mickelson)
Our comp mirrored the actual British Open, as Ernie Els’ (ozzz's pick) birdie putt on #18 and Adam Scott’s (wwe's pick) late collapse gave ozzz2002 a 1-stroke victory over wwe84 – congratulations! Ozzz was on the receiving end of a similar situation during the US Open, as he lost by 1-stroke then, but makes up for it here. It is the first podium appearance in the first golf appearance for wwe84, and PaulE also returns to the podium following his Masters victory.
Wins don’t come much more improbably than Ernie Els’ on Sunday. He entered the day 6 shots down, and he teed off on #17 down 4 strokes and having missed an easy birdie putt the hole before. However, he birdied #18 and Adam Scott bogeyed the final 4 holes, giving Els the upset victory.
Each golfer in contention seemed to have a moment when things came apart. Brandt Snedeker, the leader after the first 2 rounds, double-bogeyed #7 and #8 (losing his drive on #7). Tiger Woods found the bunker on 3 straight holes, #13-15, bogeying each one and taking him out of the race. Graeme McDowell hit a bizarre line drive into the trees on #11, losing his ball and forcing a third straight bogey, putting him 6 shots back.
Things were going well for Adam Scott as he teed off #15. He hit a drive right down the middle and had a 4-stroke lead with 4 holes to play. Then, he went into the bunker on his 2nd shot and missed an easy par putt. On #16, he had a 3-putt bogey with the par putt rimming out. On #17, he overshot the green following a loud roar from #18 as Els made a birdie putt to make the lead only 1 shot, leading to another bogey and a tie on the leaderboard. On #18, Scott hit his drive up against the ridge of a bunker, forcing a blast out to the side, and missed the 8-foot par putt that would have forced a playoff.
Brandt Snedeker seemed to be off well in the first two days, shooting -10 and was bogey free for the first 40 holes. Then he bogeyed 4 of the next 5 and 6 of the next 10, and while he still finished tied for third, he never vied for the lead on Sunday.
The most popular pick for the British Open was, unsurprisingly, British. 12/16 picked Lee Westwood (+6) in hopes he would win his first major. In a close second was Padraig Harrington (+5), with 11/16 picking him.
Some big names didn’t seem to show up this year. Phil Mickelson, who tied for second last year, went wild early and often, shooting +11 after the first two days. Sergio Garcia, who finished tied for ninth last year, went +4 and also missed the cut. World #5 Webb Simpson withdrew the week prior in preparation for the birth of his second child. World #9 Justin Rose matched Garcia shooting +4 and missing the cut. Also, last year’s winner Darren Clarke found trouble in round 1 and finished +7 at the cut.
We also had our first instance of a score of a cut golfer beating out one that made the cut, as N-Bomb’s Rafael Cabrera-Bello collapsed from +1 after 2 rounds to a +14 final. Anders Hansen only shot +4 after 2 rounds, so his doubled score beat out Cabrera-Bello by 6 strokes.
And the PGA Championship is right around the corner, as players will tee off the first round on August 9 at Kiawah Island in South Carolina, and we hope to see you there!
