There we have it! Five weeks into the comp, we have not only our first near perfect bonuses, as four tippers got at least 13/15, but also our first near miss, as Howie72 shoots 14/15 with a HoF performance. Howie was only 4 points from a perfect entry, but Nevada went on the road and took down Washington 76-73. He also rockets up from ninth place to fourth just like that.
In a weekend a little light on top matchups (bear in mind that if not for a venue dispute during the offseason Kentucky and Indiana would have played each other), the only contest between two ranked teams finished with #13 Illinois chopping down the giants of #10 Gonzaga 85-74, in a result that has perhaps not fully sunk in for your comp organizer.
This week provided some great potential upsets, but other than the previously-mentioned two games, failed to deliver. Last year, Temple welcomed #3 Duke to town with a 78-73 upset. This year, the #2 Blue Devils got some revenge to the tune of 90-67. Colorado entered Saturday in the “also receiving votes” category of both major polls, but that likely won’t be the case next week, as #9 Kansas Rock-Chalk-Jayhawked them 90-54. #21 UNLV did receive a scare from California on the road, but a put-back with 0.9 seconds left on the clock gave them a 76-75 victory.
The perhaps-top 10 Illinois Fighting Illini have two tune-ups against Norfolk State and Eastern Kentucky this week, looking to go 12-0 for the first time since 2005-06.

George95 has decided he’s done with this ‘competition’ stuff, and he bolts out to a 5-point lead with a HoF near-miss, matched by N-Bomb. On the other side of the gamut, ozzz2002 picks up his second spoon, missing five of the eight games that matched up power conference teams against mid-majors.
Two fantastic games were featured in our comp this week. #1 Indiana faced Butler in Indianapolis, and while the Hoosiers were able to force overtime with a 3-pointer inside ten seconds in regulation, but with the game tied at 86 inside five seconds in the extra period, could not stop a layup from a former walk-on, and the Bulldogs took down the giants. Later on in the day, #7 Arizona led for just over a minute the entire game against #5 Florida, but that included when the clock hit 0:00, and they came out with the win.
With Indiana’s loss, Michigan will become the highest-ranked team in the Big 10, as they trounced West Virginia by 15 in Brooklyn. #6 Louisville faced a 16-point deficit during the first half, but got it down to 7 by halftime and beat Memphis 87-78. Many other upset bids came well short, as most favorites took care of business this week.
#10 Illinois will face undefeated Eastern Kentucky on Sunday evening, followed by a week of finals before we see them again in this comp in the Braggin’ Rights Game in St. Louis against #12 Missouri.

Another week, another big upgrade to the lead for George95. A strong performance puts him up by 7 over the rest of the field, while the next 7 spots after that are separated by 7 as well. Meanwhile, Sypher laughs in the face of ranked teams, selecting two top-10 upsets by picking both Temple and Kansas State. On the other end of the spectrum, with a second straight spoon ozzz2002 is allowing wwe84 to catch back up to the field.
A host of upsets littered the field this week. Temple surprised everyone by upsetting Duke last year, and followed it up this year by taking down #3 Syracuse. #8 Florida goes down to Kansas State; a mini-upset put #9 Kansas over #7 Ohio State; Dayton took down everyone’s darling Murray State; and of course the granddaddy of them all. Somehow, someway, #12 Missouri wins their 4th-straight Braggin’ Rights Game over #10 Illinois.
Not every top-10 team had a bad weekend, though: #4 Louisville crushed Western Kentucky 78-55. Outside of the comp, #1 Duke also demolished Elon 76-54. Why bring that up?
A bold pick by a bold man.
Due to the “picking against Illinois” rule, dg_dave gets his score reset back to zer- no, what’s that? He gets a bonus point?! Hmmm, the comp organizer should look into some rule changes. The now not-so-undefeated Fighting Illini are back into action after the holidays, taking on Auburn on Dec. 29th.

I have to root for my parents' home state...it's just too bad that the Illini fell to them. It's too rare a team goes xx-0 in a basketball season anyway.

There were HoFs galore this week, from the front of the field to the back. The top 2 retain their position with 11/15, while wwe84 gets out of the back of the field with his first HoF performance, as well as BxBarracuda, who moves back into the middle of the field. LeoDaVinci and dg_dave both pick up their first spoons.
At the top of the rankings, #1 Duke seemed to be safe against Santa Clara, but the two teams were tied at 45 with 15 minutes left. Following a 29-15 run, the Blue Devils escaped with a comfortable victory. The upset bug almost struck #4 Louisville as well, but they beat Kentucky for the first time since 2009, edging out their cross-state rival by 3. Not everyone was immune though, as #20 UNLV went to Chapel Hill and led for only 29 seconds in a loss to North Carolina.
The only underdogs in our own field that yielded bonus points were a decisive 12-point margin for the College of Charleston over Vermont and those brainiacs of Harvard tripled their way to victory with 10 3-pointers against California.
And #12 Illinois (as well as the vast majority of other teams) starts conference play this week. They have a match against much-despised Purdue before we pick the matchup against #10 Ohio State, who is looking for revenge following a huge upset in Champaign last year.

For the first time since he took the lead, George95 slips slightly despite picking 12/15 - Howie72 right behind him picked up a bonus picking 13 and illiniman14 in third got his first HoF. paper_aero takes only 5 and picks up his second spoon, dropping back a couple spots in the process. Meanwhile, doomed is flirting with going inactive next week.
Think conference play isn’t tough on the road? #15 Georgetown fell to Marquette in a game where both teams failed to get 50 points. #11 Illinois, fresh off a road loss themselves, throttled #8 Ohio State 74-55 in Champaign. Purdue, off of their victory over Illinois, was creamed as well by #18 Michigan State 84-61.
It wasn’t all bad for road teams, though. Florida State handled Clemson 71-66, and Florida trampled Yale 79-58 in a non-conference match. Outside of our comp, #14 Cincinnati fell at home to St. John's 53-52.
#12 Illinois takes on their second #8 team in a row when Minnesota comes to town before they take a trip to Wisconsin over the weekend.

If you picked this week, there was almost a 50% chance you made the HoF, as 6/13 tippers hit 11/15, including our vaunted leader George95, who extends his lead to an all-time high of 9 points this week. Forlornly behind are Howie72, who picks up his first spoon this week, and illiniman14, who earned the only bonus point this week, picking #20 NC State to topple previously-unbeaten #1 Duke. On the far end of the spectrum, doomed has left the ranks of active tippers.
A host of upsets littered the ranks this week. As previously mentioned, #1 Duke fell on the road, setting up #2 Michigan to take the spot if they could take down rival #15 Ohio State on the road Sunday – but failed. #10 Missouri fell to Mississippi; #12 Illinois was embarrassed by Wisconsin; and Connecticut beat #17 Notre Dame on the road. But, new #1 Louisville took care of business by easily downing South Florida 64-38.
As conference play got into full swing, something strange happened in this comp – road teams came out and easily won the majority of the games. A surprising Marquette team took down Pittsburgh in overtime; North Carolina rebounded from a rocky start and edged Florida State; while UCLA has seemingly fixed their own early-season woes and skirted by Colorado as well. UCLA, Marquette, and victorious VCU join the top 25 this week.
After a hot start, Illinois is coming back down to Earth without a parachute. Following a home drubbing to #8 Minnesota and the aforementioned Wisconsin loss, lowly Northwestern came to town and ransacked Champaign 68-54. Will the old Illini ever show up again? Only time will tell.

No real change at the top or bottom this week, and only a few shuffled around towards the middle of the pack. So goes the week when yet again six different tippers hit a HoF, and no bonus points were handed out. George95 maintains his 9-point lead over the rest of the field. dg_dave tipped a season-low 4 for the spoon, his second of the year.
And so went the week of fantastic finishes. The best finish of the week certainly occurred in #13 Butler vs. #8 Gonzaga, where with 3.5 seconds left and Gonzaga inbounding the ball with a 63-62 lead, Butler stole a strangely-lofted inbounds pass and drove in for a buzzer-beating shot, winning 64-63. Elsewhere, #6 Syracuse went on the road to #1 Louisville, where the hosting Cardinals went scoreless for the last 1:58, allowing the Orange to win 70-68.
Not enough tight games? Good. #25 Marquette went on the road to face the USA Today Poll’s #24 Cincinnati, and despite finding themselves down 29-13 at halftime, fought back to tie the game with only 49 seconds left, and forced overtime. But, in the end Cincinnati pulled it out 71-69. #18 Michigan State hosted #11 Ohio State in Lansing, and the game was tied with 44 seconds left until Keith Appling scored 6 points in the final minute and led the Spartans to a 59-56 win. From the unheralded ranks, two perennial tournament contenders from the MAC sparred, and Akron turned a 3-point Kent State lead with 2:27 left into a 4-point victory.
So who wants to be #1? Last week, undefeated #1 Duke lost on Saturday, then the last undefeated, #2 Michigan, failed to take advantage and lost as well. This week, Louisville took over the reins and immediately lost. Now it looks to be Indiana’s turn once again, and they host Michigan State on Sunday. Will the revolving door continue to spin?
Illinois will be deservedly unranked as of noon Monday, and they are back in action on Tuesday against the Big Ten’s eleventh-best team, Nebraska. Then on Sunday they take what will surely be a fateful trip to Ann Arbor to take on Michigan.

George95 shows he’s human once again, giving up 2 points from his ever-present lead, but still has a larger lead than there are weeks remaining. The rest of the field has plenty of catching up to do. Like 2 weeks ago, scores ranged from only 7-11 this week, so there was little movement save LeoDaVinci (go 49ers) and themonarch swapping spots, but for the first time we have a clear 1-15 ranking of every tipper. themonarch also picked up his first spoon along the way.
The big prediction this week?
Louisville at Georgetown (this one will be a close one I think)
Correctamundo! Not to mention, dg_dave was one of 3 tippers to take Georgetown over #5 Louisville, who found themselves in a free fall of 3 straight losses before eeking out a win on Monday. Dave was also the only tipper to take Villanova over #3 Syracuse, winning their second-straight game over a top-5 opponent. New #1 Duke kept on the #1 curse, getting crushed by #25 Miami 90-63 on Wednesday before torching Maryland 84-64.
A shorter write-up this week, but enough time to say that the gauntlet of Illinois’ season is in full swing, losing to #2 Michigan handily, with Michigan State, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Minnesota on deck.

And all of the sudden, we have ourselves a race for the top spot. Whereas George95 has had a healthy lead for much of the season, a 7/15 performance coupled with 11/15 HoF performances by #2-4 means he only has a 3-point lead with 5 weeks to go. On the other side of the spectrum, BxBarracuda picks up his first spoon of the year with only 5/15.
Who wants to be #1? #1 Michigan took a trip to Bloomington, and #3 Indiana took them to the woodshed early in the first half. The game ended up a healthy 81-73, but the result was the same as the previous 3 weeks – the #1 team would be there no longer. So obviously #2 Kansas would take over the spot, right? Well… Oklahoma State had something to say about that, snapping a 33-game home winning streak and giving the Jayhawks their first conference loss. As expected, Indiana would then take over the #1 spot.
The top 25 was littered with other upsets as well: Pittsburgh held ground on their home turf against #6 Syracuse 65-55; #10 Oregon also had a tough time on the road at California, losing 58-54; #15 Wichita State also went down on the road to Northern Iowa 57-52; and #22 San Diego State was welcomed into the rankings by Air Force with a 70-67 defeat. The only other matchup of two top-25 teams was surprising #14 Miami (FL) against #19 NC State – and the Hurricanes eeked it out on the road 79-78.
So Indiana took over the #1 spot when the #1 team has lost 4 weeks in a row. Who do they play this week? Why, on Thursday they are scheduled for Illinois in Champaign. How would that game go? Sounds like an update for next week.

At the rate it was going, I was wondering if we could get it finished today or if they'd end up suspending it because of the time of day!

Ever so slowly, George95’s lead is dwindling down. Howie72 only disagreed with him on one game, and got it right – so down to 2 it goes with 4 weeks left. illiniman14 and gtho4 are locked into 3rd place 5 points back from the lead. But who sits on top of the pack this week? Why, it’s ozzz2002, getting 11/15 (and two solo bonuses to boot). Only 4 points separated a HoF from a spoon this week, but LeoDaVinci and paper_aero both pick up some eating utensils this week.
Game of the day? #3 Michigan went to Wisconsin and hit a 3 in a tie game with 2.4 seconds left, but with 3 fouls to give allowed Wisconsin to get a half-court heave off, and they sunk it. In overtime, the Badgers finished off the upset 65-62. That looked like it would be, until…
A little to the east, #11 Louisville and #25 Notre Dame had gone to overtime or double overtime in 5 of 7 matchups, and they decided to go a little extra this time. Notre Dame’s Jarian Grant scored 12 points in the last 47 seconds to tie it at 60. Poor clock management by Louisville at the end of the first and second overtime periods sent it into a third overtime (despite 3 Irish starters fouling out by the start of the first overtime), where Louisville hit 1 of 2 free throws with 15 seconds left to tie the game, and Notre Dame turned it over with 4 seconds left, leading to a fourth overtime.
Tired yet? I watched it live (the least I could do for my alma mater, UL). Fast forward to the end of 4OT, and we get UL up 93-89 with 59 seconds left. Game over, right? Right… except ND made a layup and UL’s Russ Smith inexplicably raced down the court and missed a wild layup, giving the Irish one last chance. Two missed shots later, Garrick Sherman, who didn’t play a single second in regulation, tipped up a rebound into the basket, and off we went to the fifth overtime. For what seemed like the first time, ND got the early lead, but UL had the chance to tie with 24 seconds left – but missed both free throws. After what might be characterized by poets as “a long game,” ND pulled it out 104-101.
Surprisingly, there was time for other game of note to happen as well. San Francisco, down 15 just after halftime, finished the 2nd half 60-34 and won 99-87 over BYU (maybe because gtho4 called them the “Tigers” – poor Cougars). #23 Pittsburgh went to #17 Cincinnati and despite being down by 5 at half, won 62-52. UNLV, however, showed how hard it is to win a conference game on the road, taking down #15 New Mexico 64-55. And perhaps most of note, #5 Kansas earned their first 3-game losing streak since 2005 after being taken out by Oklahoma on the road 72-66.
Stop me if you’ve heard this before: Does ANYBODY want to be #1? OK, well I’ll keep going anyway. #1 Indiana had a tough week (see below), but #2 Florida was already crushed by Arkansas earlier in the week. #3 Michigan was stunned by Wisconsin as we know, which eventually just left the ranking at #4 Duke’s doorstep. They play Boston College on Sunday, and North Carolina and Maryland later this week.
The #1 team had lost 4 weeks in a row, and #1 Indiana took a trip to Illinois on Thursday… and now the #1 team has lost 5 weeks in a row. Down 70-61 with 3:36 left, Illinois went on a 13-2 run, including a wide-open layup off an inbounds pass with only 0.9 seconds left on the clock for the win. Up next: Minnesota on Sunday and a chance for revenge against Purdue on Wednesday.

Awesome game from Wisconsin, I love the Badgers and that was the game of the year! Well, the five OT game was crazy... but crap basketball.

It was certainly a week of change, as only 5 tippers kept their previous position from last week. One of those was George95, who increases his lead to 3 as gtho4 puts in a HoF performance and reclaims 2nd for the first time since week 7. Joining him with 13/15 is srini701 – but that’s no surprise considering they’re using the same dartboard.
Let’s see… where to begin… oh yes: Does ANYBODY want to be #1? Now, if you’re looking at the ESPN/USA Today ranking, you’re thinking “Well, Indiana won last week, what’s your problem?” You see, following their loss to a certain rival last week, Duke took the #1 spot in the AP Poll, and then took a trip to Maryland and lost 83-81. That sends it back to Indiana for the top spot, and they played #4 Michigan State on the road on Tuesday. Stay tuned…
In our comp, it was one of the quieter weeks on the schedule so far. Kentucky lost star Nerlens Noel earlier in the week to a torn ACL, and then came out and laid an egg against Tennessee 88-58, their largest loss ever to the Volunteers. Rivalry games can also make strange results, as Army, having a respectable season, had already lost to struggling Navy at home this year, and barely edged the Midshipmen 56-55 on the road. Marquette kept up their hot run against Pittsburgh to remain atop the Big East 93-81; Arkansas continues its baffling season of being simply unbeatable at home in conference play, beating Missouri 73-71; UCLA got back on track taking out Stanford 88-80; and the battle of the brains left Harvard atop Princeton 69-57.
The Illini at least appear to be back towards early-season form, beating #18 Minnesota on the road and dismantling Purdue 79-59. Up next: “Chicago’s Big Ten School” (*chuckle*) Northwestern, winless-in-conference Penn State, and finally #7 Michigan on the road on Sunday.

We’ve entered the home stretch, and George95 extends his lead to 4 over gtho4 and 6 over Howie72 – his lead deteriorated 6 points over two weeks from weeks 11-13, and yet he’s held the lead since week 2. srini701 racks up his second consecutive HoF, and becomes the first person to also get consecutive perfect pick bonuses.
Finally, the #1 team will remain the same. Indiana went to #4 Michigan State and edged out a win 72-68 in a thrilling win. Not every top team avoided the upset bug though, as #2 Miami was routed by Wake Forest 80-65, while in our own comp #8 Syracuse fell at home to #11 Georgetown 57-46. #20 Marquette fell out of the Big East lead following their 60-56 loss to Villanova.
A shorter update this week, because so few other upsets or nail-biters for our purposes. Illinois went 2-1 this past week, only losing at #7 Michigan. They are off until next Saturday before taking on Nebraska.

With one week to go, we have a true battle for first place. The only two tippers who have held the position, gtho4 and George95, swap places as the former gets a HoF while the latter misses getting his first wooden spoon by 1 pick. dg_dave does pick up the spoon this week, while LeoDaVinci got his picks in too late and suffered a 1-point reduction.
You guessed it, #1 Indiana fell this week, as Minnesota defended their home court 77-73. That opened the door for Gonzaga to take the top spot, becoming the third team from a non-power conference to be ranked #1 in the last decade, joining 2003-04 St. Joseph's and 2007-08 Memphis.
There were several good games this week. #13 Kansas State went to Baylor and took advantage of an inbounds pass being tossed out of bounds with 1 second left to hit a 3-pointer and win 64-61. #4 Michigan took down in-state rival #9 Michigan State after a dunk put them up 2, and a missed free throw solidified the 58-57 victory. Ryan Kelly returned for #3 Duke to face #5 after missing Miami (FL) for the first time since January, and scored 36 points in their 79-76 victory. #10 Louisville took advantage of struggling #12 Syracuse, taking them down 58-53 on the road. Finally, Purdue pulled off the stunner of the weekend, beating #17 Wisconsin on the road 69-56.
Illinois struggled to beat a bad Nebraska team on Senior Night 72-65, and followed that by an even more underwhelming performance, shooting just 28.6% in a loss to Iowa. Their ticket to the tournament is all but punched, but getting some momentum before March Madness would be nice.

This part of the madness is over, and gtho4 stands on top of the heap! He has won every year this comp has run, a remarkable feat! He started and ended the comp getting a HoF with 9 picks correct, and finished both weeks up by just 1 pick on the rest of the field. Congratulations!
Only 1 pick away was George95, as he held the tiebreaker of bonus points, but he could not get that one pick to get him over the edge. At one point, he held a lead of 9 over the rest of the field, but could not survive the onslaught of 3/4 HoFs by gtho4 to end the year. Still a valiant effort for silver!
In the battle for third, Howie72 and illiniman14 stood toe-to-toe, hinging on the result of Sunday’s Indiana- Michigan game. With seconds to go, Michigan put up a layup that seemed to stick to the rim and barely fell off the side, earning a tie between the two and a bronze for Howie72, holding the tiebreaker with more HoFs. For the record, I have no regrets picking against the Hoosiers.
A week of historic lows struck the field, becoming the first week in which all 15 games were played and the HoF hit below 10 picks correct. Nobody saw Baylor’s 81-58 drubbing of Kansas coming, while only handfuls predicted the upsets of Purdue over Minnesota; Florida State over NC State; Temple over VCU; or Tennessee over Missouri, despite all being at home. Never underestimate senior night!
And with that, we sign off for the regular season NCAA Basketball comp. Conference tournaments are underway, determining the automatic bids, and end with the Big Ten Tournament just an hour or so before Selection Sunday. Hope you enjoyed the comp, and on with the Madness!
