From CNN: TAMPA, Florida (CNN) -- A single-engine private plane crashed Saturday into the Bank of America building in downtown Tampa, police said.

A 15-year-old student pilot was at the controls of the plane when it took off from a nearby airport in St. Petersburg, according to a spokesman for the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Department.

There were no immediate reports on casualties or injuries as a result of the crash.

Commercial airports in both Tampa and St. Petersburg temporarily suspended operations following the crash.

The skyscraper is located on Ashley and Kennedy Boulevard, according to Katie Hughes of the Tampa Police Department. The plane struck the building, built near the banks of the Hillsborough River, about two-thirds up, she said.

The tail of the plane was hanging from the side of building, and windows on at least two stories had shattered, according to reports. The structure remained intact and no smoke or flames were immediately evident at the scene.

The plane, built in 2000, is owned by National Aviation Holdings of Clearwater, Florida, according to Landings, a Web site that tracks information on individual aircraft.

Also, my brother was watching either CNN or MSNBC and he said that they thought there was a Coast Guard plane near it... but I don't know if my brother heard right or not..

MSNBC is now saying that the pilot left the airport without clearance.

He wouldn't have had 'clearance' of any sort. The 15-year old was a student pilot. There's no federal minimum age for students, but one cannot solo an aircraft until age 16, and cannot be licensed until age 17. The kid was pre-flighting the aircraft alone as part of his training. His instructor (CFI) was waiting for his report before going over it with him to check his procedure. The CFI reported that instead of reporting back to him, the kid started the engine and left the field. He stole the aircraft. As to why he crashed the building, who knows? Accident or intentional?

The boy was too inexperienced to devise a flight course, having gained a total of 6 air hours in dual instruction in about two years, according to the CFI's report to FAA. the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will conduct a thorough investigation, of course, to determine the physical cause(s) of the incident, including the pilot's background and immediate past. Due to its nature, and the mood of the times, I'm sure the FBI will take part in digging into the boy's life.

No point in speculating until the facts are known.

It was reported that the boy carried a suicide note saying that he was working alone, not as part of a group, but had sympathies for bin Laden and the events of 11th September. It would appear that he deliberately flew into the building, no accident.

The report can be read here
