The horrors of 09/11 are being felt internationally in a dramatic way.

While the tragedy's affect on US airlines has been dramatic, its impact on foreign carriers is, in many cases, worse. The USA has several large carriers--United, American, Delta, US Airways, Northwest--that ahve had lay-offs and have cut flights. Some small European countries have only one flag carrier, sometimes supplemented by small feeder lines.

Since 09/11, consider the following:

Swissair, the Swiss flag carriers, has ceased operations, as has SABENA (the Belgian carrier). Alitalia (Italy), Aer Lingus (Ireland), KLM (the Netherlands) and SAS (Scandinavia) are feared to follow suit.

It appears that the 09/11 'attack on America' has had far=reaching international repercussions.

I agree, the tragedy has affected many nations. I thought that Swissair had undergone a name change, rather than ceasing operations. Aren't they called Air Swiss now?

Yes, Skeptik, the carriers are trying a comback. Swissair will be called Swiss Airlines, SABENA is to be called Air Bruxelles, and so on.

It's just too bad that the original carriers collapsed and have had to reorganize with differing degrees of government/private sector sponsorship. Plus, they've had their route maps substantially reduced snd services cut.

What a shame.

It is not only airlines that have suffered through the events of that day, it was announced that our government buildings are no longer covered by insurance for terrorist attacks.

I saw a nice one on the news this morning about how it's changed the language of some teens in America - events that are insignificant worries are now dismissed as being "so September 10th"
