I went for my acupuncture on Tuesday and the doctor (he used to be my GP for over twenty years) suddenly started asking me questions which suggested that he was warning me about diabetes, he also told me about some warning signals to be aware of. As I have a family history I told him that I do a test every few weeks to keep an eye on the situation.

Guess what, did the test this morning and the colour on the test stick went beserk I can only assume that he guessed that I might have diabetes but since he is no longer my GP ethics would prevent him from saying so.

Bought new test sticks in case they were faulty and repeated the test, off the scale again so have contacted my doctor who wants me to have blood tests on Monday morning, in the meantime he says to stick to a low sugar diet for the weekend.

So what I want from you my friends is some tips on food for the weekend.

It breaks my heart to think that I might never taste meringues with lashings of whipped cream again

Sue, My father is a diabetic and he was taking 2 pills in the morning and 2 in the evening plus a shot! He went on the Dr.Atkins low carb diet and now only takes one pill in the morning! Check it out! He does not seem to suffer any!

Thank you JoJo for the sites - great to know that I won't have to starve

Sandlewood, that is very encouraging.

What is so very, very sad is that last week I yielded to temptation and went into a wonderful shop that we have which sells the most gorgeous chocolates and other sweets (candies) - bought loads, enough to last me a couple of months. Haven't even unpacked it and now I will have to give them all away

When I was there I noticed that they have a section for diabetics - I thought that I would buy some for my mother next time I visit her .... now we can share them

JoJo - I have just looked at those sites - wow, they are now bookmarked. Many thanks.

Sue, you just send those chocolates to the Staff Lounge and they will be gone in no time and you won't have to worry about them.

When I saw that first site will all the recipes for sweets for you, I got excited because it is hell to feel deprived. I will look for some more sites for you tonight. Take care.

Sorry JoJo - I have already promised them to Debbie at work, and all the biscuits and cakes in the house

Even if this turns out to be a false alarm (I did change my HRT medication last month so that could be a factor) I will definitely aim to eat a healthier diet.

Sort of good and bad news. The bad news is that I do have diabetes, the good news is that I have caught it right at the beginning and it is very mild. Doctor says that if I eat a low sugar diet and lose a stone in weight (OK you US lot, 14 pounds) then hopefully I won't require any medication in the foreseeable future - just keep it monitored.

Thank you for the good wishes that I have had.

I'm so sorry Sue. But I'm glad you got the diagnosis early, the more you can do to regulate this now, the less damage it can to to your body later.

I picked up a book from the library yesterday with some very good information about carbohydrates and insulin regulation. It's called: The Carbohydrate Addict's Healthy Heart Program The authors are: Drs Richard F and Rachel F Heller, and Dr Frederic J Vagnini.

I only browsed through some of it but I was impressed by them.

Take Care!

Sue943--I have several friends with diabetes.None of them are on diets that are that severely restricted. They all enjoy some sweets--they just watch the amounts and don't go overboard. It is a matter of watching carbohydrate intake in general and not overloading with carbs, or eating them along with protein. But my friends all enjoy a bit of candy, some ice cream, a cookie or two, and an occasional piece of cake or pie. They just have these treats less frequently than they did before. What's more important, is simply to make sure you eat at regular intervals to keep your blood sugar as level as possible. So don't feel bad--you'll still be able to eat the good stuff.Only maybe a little less of it, and a little less often. And some of the dietetic stuff is just great.

I am glad that your diabetes was detected early. That is a bonus.
But it is a wallop to suddenly find out you have a serious condition.I know my friends were thrown somewhat when they received the same news.

Since you have to lose some weight, come join our Ups and Downs Of Dieting topic in the MarketSquare.Several of us are trying to shed some pounds. We'll keep you company

Thank you all for your thoughts and good wishes - nice to have such lovely people giving support.

What is even worse is that the doctor said that if I continue to smoke it will double the odds of complications - the choice is mine. I have decided to 'delay' having the next cigarette, not give up smoking. Less likely to crave one if I know that I can light one whenever I want without feeling guilty, so far I have delayed since Monday of last week, it is now early Wednesday morning so about eight days or so. No problems so far, the room smells of hyacinths instead of stale tobacco.

Sue you are an inspiration! Along with changing your lifestyle for diabetes, you've quit smoking for it too!
I hope I can find that strength too!

You are one awesome woman!
