WHY DON'T ESKIMOS MELT THEIR IGLOOS?Much like the teepee, the igloo is equipped with a fire pit in the center and a hole in the top to allow the smoke to escape. And the question is how do they keep the igloo from melting when they heat it with fire?
There are a few factors to remember. First, the fire is placed in the center of the igloo, farthest away from all walls. Second, the ice of the igloo will lose heat to the colder air outside. As long as the ice loses heat at least as fast as the fire delivers the heat, the ice won't melt.
Although they look cozy and warm when you see them on PBS, the fact remains that the igloos really can't be heated to much more than 32 degrees. However, don't forget that the air around the fire can be quite warm without threatening the walls.
