I am interested in who other then myself use Lavendar on a daily basis. I use it to calm the pet and kids and also to help with burns and cuts.

Jo is a new member to the Lavendar club.
Tell us what you have found with it. Did it help you relax at all? Help you sleep better? Give you a feeling of well being?

I am interested in hearing what your experience with Lavendar was.

First of all thank you Sandalwood for mailing the Lavender to me. You are such a sweet friend. I have ill for the past three days, so I have been putting a couple of drops in a tub of hot water and it seems to help take some of the aches away and I am sleeping a lot. I have put a drop on my rabbits pillow so that hopefully she won't have any freak out rabbit episodes. I will let you know more as time goes on. I almost forgot, I made some wonderful Lavender potourri. Smells devine.

Essential oils or the real "leaves" from the plant? Which one are you using?

I have some wonderful bath gel and lotion that has lavendar in it. I need to get some of the real thing, though, the next time I'm near Mom's herb garden!

I always put some essential oils on my pillow at night, sometimes Lavendar, sometimes Rosemary. Lavendar relaxes, Rosemary gives me a bit of 'get up and go' - it will be Lavendar tonight as I need a good sleep.

Hi Linda, I mainly use the essential oils. Love them, but the plant is good also, especially for putting in a case and putting over the eyes to rest with.

Sue I use Rosemary as a wake up upper too. I have two huge Rosemary plants and cut back every week and put in vases around the house.

My favourite! As I said before.. a few drops on the pillow and Zonk!! I am at present trying very hard to keep my one surviving plant alive... very difficult as Hong Kong is not it's habitat. I grew them from seed (I was very proud of that) It's only about 4 inches tall with a few stems.. the leaves smell lovely. I'm just singing to it and hoping for the best (any advice welcome).

Hmmm Ren that is a tough one. You might want to try a little cow milk in the water that you are using for the plant. I use it on my herbs. When I rinse my carton for recycling I use all water to what is left in the container and water the plants with it.

However singing and loving it should work wonders!!

I use Yardley bath products. I have done for years but never used the essential oils. Doesn't that stain the linen? Also, while I have your lavender attention, does anyone know the secret to growing it? I have tried several times but the end result is always the same...dead. Now I have two plants, one is 'green lavender' and the other is just lavender.I am growing one in a pot and one in a desert garden. What king of food do they need. Also lots of water or hardly any?
If anyone can help I'd like to hear from you.

The International Herb Association voted LAVENDER as the 1999 Herb of the Year!

There are many good books and articles on lavender. Its' many uses have been well documented for centuries. From the early Romans, whose communal baths were fragranced with lavender oil, to the Egyptians who used lavender in perfumes and incense, to the Monks of England who used lavender in medicinal remedies, to modern day aromatherapy and crafting, lavender is always a true and trusted herb. As with most herbs, its uses are so varied that it is almost unbelievable. Lavender has been loved and consider valuable for centuries.

In a landscape, lavender is a must in herb gardens and cottage gardens. The fragrant flowers vary from deep purple to pink, white and yellow/green. The green or gray foliage and even the stems are very fragrant. Lavender can be pruned to form hedges or topiaries or allowed to grow naturally into rounded bushes.

Native to the Mediterranean area, lavender likes hot, dry summers and cold winters. It likes full sun, little water, well draining soil and little or no fertilizer. Prune the top 1/3 of the plant after blooming and that is all!

The hardest part of growing lavender is deciding on the variety that best suits your needs. Do you have room for English lavender that grows 3-4' tall and as wide or would Hidcote fit in your landscape better (12-18")? Then decide on color verses fragrance. Spanish lavender has beautiful deep purple flowers & is usually the first to bloom in late winter, but it does not have much fragrance. Other lavenders have more fragrance, but are not as colorful. Would you like your French lavender with green or gray foliage? Many cultivars seem to cover the best of everything; medium size, very fragrant and colorful (Grosso, Munstead, Hidcote, Twickle Purple.) You could start a collection if you wanted to.

In Victorian England, Queen Victoria made the best of lavender, using it to perfume body and house, to wash floors and clean furniture, fragrance the linens, repel insects, treat lice, perfume potpourri and soap and as a medicinal cure-all.

At the end of a stressful day, treat yourself to a relaxing bath by adding drops of lavender oil and bath salts to the bathwater and then sip some herbal lavender tea. Use your lavender sleep pillow to help you fall asleep and dream of the beautiful lavender fields of Province.

Thanks JoJo...you are a walking encyclopedia!! I had no problem growing this in England and thought it must like moisture, but I found it grows well here in the desert and kept wondering what I was doing wrong. I can give it everything you mention, but can't guarantee the cold winters.I was afraid to prune them after flowering in case I butchered them. The bigger and fuller they grow the better.I will heed your information and hopefully,by next year I will have BIG healthy plants. Thanks a million.

We have a lavendar farm a couple of miles from here, I drive past it most days and love it when it is in full bloom.
http://www.jerseylavender.co.uk/

Use the lavendar oil the other night and it was the first night that I have slept straight through in many weeks - with diabetes I tend to wake to attend to nature then find that I cannot get back to sleep ... I end up exhausted by the end of the week and have to spend most of Saturday and Sunday mornings in bed to compensate.

There you are, Sue , just as I said, it's wonderful. Two drops on my pillow and Zonk!! Ren's away!! By the way thanks to whoever said it likes full sun.... mine looks much better for the (2!) days we've had, and for not so much water. I keep forgetting to put milky water . I'm going to try that too.

It's well known that tea tree oil is good for treating acne, but Lavender oil is also a wonderful acne treatment. Lavender is also excellent for treating burns, (it takes the pain out of the burn and prevents scarring). Apply a drop or two to a cotton pad and wipe over the face for acne. Gently apply a drop or two on a burn also.
