Have you always wanted fresh herbs but don't want to commit the yard space, maintenance time, or energy to an herb garden? Try planting a one-pot herb garden and place it on your deck, porch, or patio.

Most any container will do; however, a strawberry pot is ideal. A strawberry pot is a terra cotta pot with multiple openings, also known as a "hens and chicks" pot. This pot is ideal because it keeps the foliage of your herbs separate from one another, while the roots are combined for one-stop watering and fertilizing. Whatever the container you choose, be sure it has drain holes and keep a tray under it to catch excess water.

For the soil, use a soil mixture of 1 part compost or sterile garden soil, 1 part sphagnum moss, and 1 part perlite. Position the herbs that like drier soil (such as the Mediterranean herbs lavender and rosemary) toward the top of the pot.
