Before this year's comp just six #15 seeds had won a Madness game. Florida Gulf Coast became number seven when they beat Georgetown. No one was brave enough to pick the win .. ditto the upset win by #14 La Salle over #4 Kansas State.
BxBarracuda is our new leader .. he has not won this comp before. N-Bomb in second place and Howie72 in third are prior winners.
Six games were picked by everyone .. which means we all had identical picks for 8 of the 16 games. Just three of us kept their position from Day 1 .. two of the three tail enders plus szabs in 7th. The loss by Georgetown knocked the stuffing out of a few of us.- 5 of 15 players have now lost a Final Four pick.
- four players have now lost a finalist.
- the two tail-enders have now lost their winner.
That's 32 gone and 31 left; and no-one has a complete set of 31 live ones .. ozzz2002 is still best with 28 alive and kicking. BxBarracuda is the only player with an mpt >300 pts (aka all his remaining picks bear fruit). |

All these big seeds are going out, in some ways it's good becuase I have teams like Gonzaga and Georgetown going out in the elite eight, while some have them making the final, but even still, going out in the 32 is a bit too early for my liking!
I'm gonna need a good (but not too good...) run from Miami and Michigan too get close to the leaderboard, it's feeling a lot like 2011 when I jumped out to an early lead and then watched as everyone's brackets (including mine) fell apart! Bx might be hard to beat.

Yet another two upsets, and one player has no now lost his winner and the losing finalist (aka NL)
BxBarracuda is starting to run away with this, and we're only at Day 3. One more day and the three tail-enders will have an mpt which is less than the leader's; and these three blokes will be officially/mathematically out of the running.
Sarah606 jumps up into second and we now have the two out front who have never won this comp. If Sarah606 collects her mpt she will win this as her picks and the leader's picks are different .. ditto ozzz2002. Sarah606 won the silver medal in the 2004 MM comp .. ozzz2002 has never won a medal in this comp.
The only prior winner in the first six is N-Bomb, who's in 3rd place .. but if all his Final Four picks, plus his winner and loser, came home he can't win this as BxBarracuda will also get maximum points from the last seven games. N-Bomb needs BxBarracuda to get all of the other four picks in the Elite Eight wrong, plus a few tomorrow on Day 4.
It's early days yet, but it starting to look like the 12th edition of this Madness comp will produce its 12th different winner. |

I said upthread that my goal was not to be eliminated after the first weekend. Looks like I succeeded...barely. The full gory details, and the 8 people left alive (assuming I didn't screw up the spreadsheet somewhere, which may be a big assumption...)
Although there are 15 games left, one of them (Wichita St. vs. La Salle) is irrelevant since nobody picked either of them to do anything. The remaining 14 games give rise to 16,384 scenarios, including 333 (2.03%) that end in a tie. Splitting ties equally among the tied people (in actuality there's a tiebreaker), I have
-10,467.5 scenarios (63.89%) in which BxBarracuda holds his lead.

Four of the Elite Eight played and two of the Final Four spots have been filled .. and we all collected a truckload of zeroes. Between us we had 30 picks for Day 7 .. and ozzz2002 was the only person to score a point!
The loss by #2 Ohio State to #9 Wichita knocked out a truckload of live picks .. we now have 10 players who can't catch BxBarracuda. If I've done this correctly, this is what should happen over the last five games if the remaining four, who can catch BxBarracuda, collect their mpt: mpt BxB

This comp looks like it will be a straight turkey-shoot between BxBarracuda and Sarah606, who can win this on the last day if Louisville make the final *and* win it.
There are too man permutations and combinations to work out if these forecasts change if no-one collects their mpt .. ditto trying to workout who collects silver and bronze behind the winner. It will be easier after the next two games are played, as there will be only eight possible combinations left; and each of those 8 can be applied to the reaming five players who are still in this. |
