Vintage Linen Care

Antique linens add so much to the interiors of our homes
that we need to keep them looking good, and taking care of
them properly is the key. Keep these tips in mind when
cleaning them!

For white linens, wash in mild detergent and don't bleach a lot because it breaks down the delicate fibers. You could put the damaged piece on the ground in the sun to bleach out naturally. Or try this formula: Add a half cup of "Fresh Start" to water or 1/8 cup "La France Whitener" and one cup of liquid bleach. Dissolve completely, add cloth, and rinse thoroughly. For ecru-colored cloth, use color-safe bleach, and add one cup white vinegar to the final rinse. Always press these linens when damp or cover with a cloth for protection. When storing, wrap in acid-free paper or muslin, not plastic!

Thanks Sandalwood, I have also heard that using good old Borax helps to whiten your linens. Funny, I was thinking about starting a thread on perserving a wedding dress, but I think that it should go right here. So if anyone has any tips on both topics, please help us out. Thanks!
