July 26, 2000 MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Master Lock Co. of Milwaukee is recalling 752,000 gun locks because their two sides can be manually separated without keys. The company said it was initiating the recall to prevent any mishaps, although no reports of gun locks being disabled have been received. The locks involved are sold separately or in combination with certain Smith & Wesson and Walther handguns. Each half of the lock surrounds the trigger with a one-inch locking post connecting them. The words "Master Lock Tough Under Fire" are imprinted on the lock's black rubber pad. The locks also have yellow stickers reading, "Warning! Do Not Use On a Loaded Gun!" Those sold separately were packaged with a green-and-black cardboard display card and instructions. Included are model Nos. 90, 90DSPT, 90KADSPT, 90TSPT, 90DS&W OR 90TS&W. The packaging also contains the words: "Made to exclusive Master Lock specifications in China." The locks were sold at Wal-Mart, Kmart, Gander Mountain and Sports Authority between June 1999 and July 2000 for between $8 and $12. Consumers are urged to call Master Lock at 800-944-1380 for a free replacement. They're also advised not to use the defective locks.

WASHINGTON -- Owners of Chrysler's hugely popular PT Cruiser apparently are buying the retro-styled compact because it's cool looking, not because it's safe. Crash tests released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show the driver of a 2001 PT Cruiser has a 36- to 46-percent chance of sustaining serious injury in a head-on collision. The cruiser received only two out of a possible five stars for protecting drivers in a 35-mph head-on crash into a wall. Front-seat passengers fared better with four stars, while rear-seat passengers were safest with a five-star ranking. The vehicle got a four-star rating for protecting front seat passenger in side-impact crashes and five-stars for rear seat passengers. A typical sport-utility vehicle got four stars in the frontal crash test. NHTSA has not yet tested the 2001 Dodge Neon, the platform on which the hybrid PT Cruiser is built. The star ratings are intended to inform consumers of the crashworthiness of a vehicle. DaimlerChrysler has sold 27,657 PT Cruisers since the vehicle was introduced in late March for a $16,000 base price. Dealers have a waiting list for the vehicle, and the delivered price has risen by thousands.
